hmm - I don't really like seeing the **** in Saints colours.

The docks back in the 1960's/70's with the original Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary, Mauretania, United States, France, Canberra etc coming and going. In those days Southampton used to seem much more conected with the waterfront than it is now, with several large ocean liners coming in and out on every day of the year. Only New York then could even hope to come close to the spectacle.

Slightly off topic I know, anyone else read Germaine Greers column in yesterdays London Evening Standard where it is questioned why anyone would want to lay down the best part of a million quid to buy a flat in such a godforsaken place as portsmouth. The article goes on to quote the time a minister compared an Iraqi city to Southampton only to be corrected by a soldier who said "theres no beer no prostitutes and people are shooting at us. its more like Portsmouth"
