Is it just me who is amazed how football used to work in the old days. Basically, the clubs held all the cards and could effectively decide what the players did. The balance of power was more “you owe it to the club and you have no choice in the matter”. And the wages were not always great. How did the PFA put up with that? I don’t really want to defend our pampered underperforming millionaires but the ones that go would be accepting offers from clubs who think they are good enough for the premiership, based on their past performances, not “suddenly thinking they are way too good for the championship”. The sad fact is we will be left with the seriously overpaid dross. The ones for clearly aren’t good enough for the prem, may well not be good enough from the championship and/or are being paid far too much for their talents. God, I hope we win tomorrow.

I think communication has been a genuine problem with some recent managers. The “word salad” post match interviews of the last two stand out. A point that has not come up is that communicating well in English must benefit the whole squad. Although many don’t have English as their first language, it’s more likely to be their second language than whatever the manager’s native tongue happens to be. I wouldn’t like to have to try to work out what point Pellegrino was trying to make if English wasn’t my first language! All the best managers in England are both foreign and great at communicating in English. As for suggesting that requesting a manager be able to communicate in English is racist - sacre bleu.

I’m enjoying going to games again. I’ve even started enjoying the Manager’s press conferences. Hughes is a breath of fresh air. Great attacking play today. And we’ve now given ourselves a good chance. Sign him up.

I think we’ve played much better under Hughes. He is a huge upgrade on that previous joker. We can win tomorrow and if we do it really is game on. I think the bookies have got it about right - currently about 30pc chance of staying up.

Just rewatched the middle of the league cup final following your post. Watched it a few times and I knew we were immense. But the thing that struck me is - none of those players have left. If anything we have found a better keeper. They should show the players that bit of the match to warm them up.
