  1. The 1991 FA Cup final against Nottingham Forest. Gary Charles was the player he crocked. When I used to be an active referee we held monthly meetings and the top referees used to come and give us talks and answer questions, all in their own time and at their own expense. One of them was Roger Milford, the referee in that final, and he talked about the Gascoigne incident. He said that when he saw Gascoigne in pain and the trainer saying that he was finished he didn’t have the heart to flash a red card in his face. He likened it to turning up to a car crash and issuing the seriously injured driver with a speeding ticket.
  2. All of it a big balls up.
  3. And lose 10-0?
  4. And have their knuckles rapped.
  5. If Shakespeare did football...
  6. In theory, yes. It would take a brave manager though. Perhaps it might be a good idea to start him. Either he will redeem himself of he will settle the queztsion for good.
  7. Likewise. There were five live matches on TV last night and I couldn’t be bothered to watch any of them.
  8. And Bednarek is the first player to score an own goal, concede a penalty and get sent off in the same match.
  9. The table doesn’t lie.
  10. It’s unusual to get 100% agreement amongst the commentators and media about an incident but without exception everybody agrees that it was a dive and should never have been a penalty. Is there anyone who thinks otherwise?
  11. He has issued the most red cards of any referee. The question is not so much how many he himself has awarded to Man Utd but how he compares with other referees and how many penalties they have awarded to them.
  12. He blew for a penalty, probably before Martial hit the ground. The issue apparently was what colour card it should be. Every commentator thought that going to the monitor would mean the penalty being rescinded.
  13. It’s a three dimensional scene projected onto a flat surface. The lines are supposed to show the three axes but there is of course an error with the accuracy of their alignment. The operator can move them from one point on one player and compare them to another. There has to be at least 10 to 20cm margin of error yet the decision is taken as definitive. And all this is viewed from an obtuse angle. Only VAR thought it might be offside at the time. Against Villa the assistant had raised his flag and you could perhaps understand VAR not overruling him. Last night the assistant didn’t raise his flag yet VAR overruled him again. One law for the rich...
  14. By lunchtime the day before I believe.
  15. It seems only a few days ago that we beat Liverpool. This run of two games a week has crippled us and once we get our first team back we shall be ok.
  16. Bertrand’s wasn’t a foul but apart from that, there’s no place for personal abuse.
  17. According to the Sun it was only to decide the colour of the card. https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/13935592/man-utd-southampton-var-mike-dean/
  18. Indeed. And to describe that as a ricochet is stretching things. It would have hit his hand even if it hadn’t brushed his thigh.
  19. Well, they’re both cu...s
  20. We’ll all get there eventually but I was not just whinging. When your time does come it’s best to be prepared. There’s the simple thing of getting the colour contrast on the texts right. What it needs is to take all the personal and contact details at the beginning so that when you do get to ‘confirm’ you can click it prompts. Otherwise they’ve sold your choice to someone else and you have to go down the snake and back to the beginning. My first dose is next Wednesday and the second is 11 weeks and 3 days later.

  22. This Wikipedia? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Mason Of course anybody can edit Wikipedia .
  23. Interpretation varies widely between Football Associations and countries.
  24. No, I’m afraid that is indicating advantage. It’s also a case of ‘look at me’ but most referees are pleased if they give advantage and it leads to a goal.
