  1. Agree with most of the above. I'd also like to add Colin Clarke to the list, scored a lot of goals in his time here yet never really got the recognition he deserved IMO + Glenn Cockerill, skillfull midfielder who gave us sterling service in the 80's\90's. Also the addition of Shilton\Wright\Dennis\Mills gave us the meanest defence we've ever had. We got 2nd in 84' because of that defence rather than our goalscoring (how many 1-0's did we get that season?). Other notable names in my time of watching Saints would be Armstrong, Marsden, Case, Pahars, Beattie, Richards, Svensson (killer - not the other one), Niemi, Crouch.
  2. Bruce Grobbelaar. 1) On a last big payday jolly. 2) Only made an effort when receiving money that wasn't from the club. 3) Crap moustache.
  3. My gut feeling is the teams around us have had purple patches and are due a wobble. We, on the other hand have been bumping along and are due a pick up in form. Don't forget about injuries too. Huddersfield have already lost one of their main players, which other key players are going to get injured between now and the end of the season? Who has the best squad to cope? Still confident of top 2 but I do wish we could play those catch up games sooner rather than later as our (points behind & games in hand) position is a psychological burden IMO.
  4. Great result although I always fancied our chances in this one. Everyone maybe talking about Huddersfield and Posh but keep an eye on Orient, unbeaten in 13 games now and only 5 points behind us if they win their game in hand. 8 more wins to get auto place IMO - should be very doable now.
  5. We'll see. Your last home game was a very close run thing and last night it was an own goal that gave you the points. IMO you're not quite as untouchable as many on here think you are. To be within 6 points of BHA with 4 games to go we'll need to gain 4 points on you over the next 9 games. Not easy but we should be capable of at least keeping up the current points rate and then it's a question of whether you drop form. As the pressure builds can Brighton maintain this form? My main concern is (as always) our mental strength - do we have the wherewithall to keep our heads and grind out the results? We can't afford any more P'boro (a) & Walsall (a) aimless hoofball performances. My gut feeling is we're due a pick up in form, you're due a wobble and it's still very much game on.
  6. Brighton's last 4 games - Saints(h), Colchester (a), Huddersfield (h), Notts Co (a) - look tricky to me. If we can get within 6 points of them coming up to those last 4 games I still think we can pip them.
  7. Also if you add in Reading, Bristol City, Palace(?), Millwall, Watford and maybe West Ham there should be plenty of easy-to-reach away days (IF we get promoted).
  8. Yeovil will give us a tough test but if we show some mental strength by keeping our heads and put on a professional display I can only see one outcome. 2-0 or 3-1 to us.
  9. Relieved at getting a result at a tricky place like Colchester esp as most of those around us won. Still confident that we'll catch Bournemouth as our 2 games in hand are both home games. Brighton are looking more remote but they still have some tough games + they must play us so it's very much still all to play for. Maybe the stinging sensation that was Tuesday night has sunk through to the players and we'll be a lot mentally tougher from here on in. No more headless chicken displays please guys.
  10. We seem to lack the mental toughness needed to get to top 2 at the moment. Also Ricky Lambert hasn't found consistent form all season and that's seriously affected us. I agree with Alpine's comment that when we come up against a team that backs off us we murder them but when we come up against a team that wants to give us a fight we flounder. We need to find the mental grit to dig in and grind out consistent results, when we did it at Exeter I was really hopeful that we'd turned a corner but with this last result it seems we've we've fallen again. I can only hope that the Walsall result will have mentally kicked the players right in the guts and made them understand that they are in a real dogfight. Toughen up Saints!
  11. Sounds like we were pretty unlucky last night so you just have to chalk it down as one of those things. Hopefully this kick in the knackers will increase their hunger and spur them to go on a big winning run.
  12. What a shock, along with Killer Deano was the best CH we've had over the last 20 years. RIP Deano.
  13. For me, the main difference at the moment is mental toughness. I think we are a bit soft and don't really know how to consistently grind out results when we need to. Brighton OTOH are picking up the results home and away. I don't think we have been as good this season as I thought we would be at the end of last season and for me the biggest reason is Ricky Lambert's form. I just haven't seen us going on a strong run the way we did last season. That said, all it would take is a mini 3 game losing streak from Brighton and a 3 game winning streak from us and we'd be breathing down their necks with a game at their place to come.
  14. Not good - yet more midweek away day backlog to work through at the business end of the season. I hope the physios are making the most of these mini breaks because we are going to need everyone fit to play our constipated fixture list.
  15. Another glorious example of lizard L***'s public relations style. LM was our greatest ever manager and I won't ever forget his time at the helm. Thoroughly deserved award.
  16. The noise when Camara scored the 4th was the loudest I've heard at SMS, absolutely electric atmosphere and one of the best home games I've seen. Funny that Norwich would be strong contenders for the best home and away games for me. (midweek cup replay at Carrow Road 1992 - amazing atmosphere that night).
  17. I support what NC is doing to the club but episodes like this make him look like an uptight ass. NC, just let the players go to the dinner and stop behaving like a petty control freak. It's supposed to be a bit of fun for god's sake. PS Those who are slagging off MLT just remember that he kept us in the prem for years when he could have easily clicked his fingers and left. He stuck by us when we needed him and gave me some of my greatest football memories, I just wish some ungrateful fans would remember this before they start their rants.
  18. Why is this such an outrageous article? Seems to me that if someone posts something that the posters don't like they just put their fingers in their ears and dismiss it out of hand. The fact is we are now owned by people who didn't buy us in the first place and as far as I know haven't really showed much interest in us since ML died. We are also an extremely attractive investment to someone with pots of money who fancies buying a football club that has massive potential. I really really hope the Liebherr's stay on at the helm as they have been nothing but good news for SFC but football clubs, just like everything else, have their price and they will sell if offered the correct amount. To dismiss this fact just because you don't like it is childish. PS: Lawrie Mac was our greatest ever manager and just because he did an interview with the Mail pre the Man Unt game it doesn't mean anything. The unsubstanciated slagging he gets on here from certain 'fans' is disgusting.
  19. MoM for me was Chaplow, superb as usual. Why couldn't we hold the ball for the last 5 mins? Just run down the clock. Too many hoofballs to the front men which were hoovered up by Posh and sent straight back to us. Eventually we cracked, what a surprise. This is also going to sound funny being as we got 4 but Lambert and Barnard should have scored more, Lambert spends too much time on the wings for me and I didn't think they looked sharp enough. That said a draw at Pboro is still a reasonable return.
  20. You can forget your 6-0 away day canters........I want to see some mental toughness and this ugly, gritty, hang-on-in-there, hard fought, mentally demanding game last night was just the ticket and possibly the best win of the season for me. Make no mistake, Exeter are a really *****ly, spiky, awkward outfit at home and will take plenty of scalps over the rest of this season. It's credit to them that they have managed to carve out this reputation with such meagre resources available to them. For us to go toe to toe before finally driving the dagger home in the 90th minute is the kind of champion performance that I've been wanting to see for a long, long time and finally shows me that we really can do 'ugly' when we need to. Will last night's result be looked back as the fulcrum around which our season rotates? We'll see.
  21. Decent player when he can be bothered, better than league 1 for sure. Just keep him perpetually on loan and he'll be great, as soon as you make him permanent he'll lose interest and throw a strop. PS: I think you made a good signing with BT, still plenty of goals in the lad yet. Shame we couldn't get him.
  22. Forget the pre match waffle, lets see what old red nose has to say about us after the game. I hope he'll be fuming..........
  23. Just to remind those of you who think that we can't possibly catch Brighton between 13th Nov and the end of Dec their results were: Hartlepool 3 - Brighton 1 Brighton 2 - Bristol Rovers 2 Saints 0 - Brighton 0 Huddersfield 2 - Brighton 1 Brighton 1 - Charlton 1 That's 3 points in 5 games. If they have a similar run again they will be caught. I'm much more concerned with our players who 'gave up' on 3 points last Saturday. They must be strong from now on and fight for every point, not limply wimp out when they come up against another set of players who are up for it. Can they do it, do they have the balls? Well we'll see.
  24. Yes we can catch them and I still think we have a fair chance of doing it - provided we get our heads in the right state. I think Brighton will feel the heat at some point and falter - all it will take is for them to lose a couple and we could be right back in it. My biggest concern is our own players, they must go into every game wanting it more than the opposition and if they do then they have every chance of going on a big winning streak. The big question in my mind is are they mentally strong enough? We simply cannot afford another pathetic performance like Tranmere.
  25. I thought he was a great manager although I do remember him getting moaned at quite a lot at the time. His teams had goals all over the place but they shipped them at an equally high rate, great entertainment. I'd put him 3rd in my best Saints manager list, behind Lawrie and Ted Bates (WGS might have broken into the top 3 but he wasn't around long enough for me). Whatever he does I wish him the best of luck. One of the decent ones.
