The guy is an average lg 1 midfielder, good at square balls in areas that cause no damage and makes the odd useful tackle. He doesn't make defence splitting passes because he can't - if he could he would. Yes folks, this emperor really has no clothes. He really reminds me of Anders Svensson, people always going on about him even though he did next to nothing (can't remember a host of clubs offering him contracts when he left us - they knew he was very mediocre). I bet you if Chaplow made 10 sublime defence splitting passes in a game and Schneiderlin made just 1, people would be banging on about how brilliant Schneiderlin was whilst completely ignoring Chaplow.

Colin Clarke's debut was the most electric for me, he scored for fun that season. A very underrated player IMO. I also witnessed Shearer's debut which was amazing too but for some reason the Colin Clarke performance electrified me more at the time.

The good news is Brighton are a decent outfit so they will come to play rather than defend. That definitely suits us. We will be right up for it and after Saturday's performance we are hitting the straps at just the right time whereas Brighton are stumbling. I can see us putting in a similar type of performance to Huddersfield at home last season - besides which we owe them one anyway. 3 or 4 - 1 to Saints.

Just thinking about the talent the club has nurtured over the years, how about this lineup as a Saints trainee XI: ST: Mike Channon ST: Alan Shearer LM: Gareth Bale CM: Steve Williams CM: MLT RM: Terry Paine LB: Wayne Bridge\Steve Mills CH: Nick Holmes CH: Mark Wright (not technically a trainee but signed very young) RB: Jason Dodd GK: Tim Flowers (not technically a trainee but signed very young) What a team! Goals all over the place. How much would that lot be worth at today's prices?

.....and not the first time (or the last) that Saints have had to let go of some of the best talent in the business. Going back 20 years I just wish we could have held onto Alan Shearer and Rod Wallace for a couple more seasons. What a devastating forward line that was and it would have only got better. If there was a league table of 'clubs that have contributed the most quality players' then I'm confident that Saints would be right up there, to think of the fantastic talent that we have had to let go of over the years...........it's gutting.

Great results and things seem to be going very much like last season...............Oct\Nov was when we finally found our feet after a fairly dodgy first 5-10 games. If this season pans out like last then we'll be there or thereabouts for automatic - and if RL gets back on form we should be aiming for top.

Great 3 points and current record looking good. Just looked at the stats and defensivley we are 3rd stingiest in the league. However attacking wise we are 20th= in the goals scored table (alongside thse free scoring legends Hartlepool and Tranmere) Another striker needed?

I think he's brought in enthusiasm, energy and positivity which have resulted in increased morale and motivation amongst the players. He's also brought in intelligence, the ability to react flexibly to opposition during a game. He's got a good quick passing strategy which is both pleasing to watch and delivers an end result. The players appear to have taken to it fairly quickly. Finally he's got probably the best bunch of players in this league thanks to AP's shrewd signings (APs greatest strength IMO).

Chaplow or Schneiderlin vs 'Udders?
Cabrone replied to Ivan Katalinic's 'tache's topic in The Saints
Chaplow and Hammond by some distance. -
Oct\Nov is often when we have a good run and this year looks to be shaping up that way. I think we'll get at least 15 points out of that lot and may go on to even get a bit more. Huddersfield (a) will be a good litmus test of where we are though I'm sneakily confident of a win.

Rupert Lowe did Good Things while he was at the club - discuss

Took us down 2 divisions, has any other chairman managed that? For the 2nd relegation all he had to do was keep the existing manager - and he screwed that up. If we are being dispassionate then you have to say that we had a very favourable set of fixtures on the cup run - apart from Spurs it was a string of emminently winnable games. We lucked out that year. Sorry - joint worst chairman in our history along with Askham. -
Really enjoyed the match although it would have been nice to have scored from open play, still 3 points is 3 points and confidence levels should be on the up. Players that I noticed were Harding: Another rock solid performance. Fonte: A Coke player in a league 1 team. My MoM. Schneiderlin: Personally I don't get the hero worship for this guy but he did the 'engine room' stuff very well today. Lallana: Skillful and tricky. Always good to watch. Barnard: Worked his tail off. Pure determination. Chamberlain: Not on for too long but looked a real livewire. Injected energy on the right side as soon as he came on. I'd drop Puncheon for Holmes as I just don't think he's giving enough decent service (although credit where it's due he did rob the B'nmouth right back to cross in and set up the 2nd penalty). Lambo needs plenty of quality crosses to get up and running and Holmes is the man to supply them. Finally Lambo, the guy looks shot of confidence although he did take the penalties brilliantly. One moment that stayed with me was at the start of the 2nd half when he was in a decent shooting position but tried to tee it up and was robbed of the ball. Last season he would have taken a swing at it and probably drawn a save or scored. He's the KEY man and needs a goal from open play - BADLY. If we can get him scoring we'll rapidly rise up the table - until that time we'll be spluttering along.

I never really liked Ian Wright, always thought he was a bit of a chav BUT if fans give a player a load of stick then they should be prepared to take some back. Can't stand hypocritical whinging supporters.

Chaplow - signed a 2 and a half year deal - OFFICIAL
Cabrone replied to SuperSAINT's topic in The Saints
Wow, great signing. Surprised we got him as I thought he was a decent Coke level player when he played for us last time. Hope he gets in the team ASAP. -
Just how/why did pre-season turn into such a shambles ?
Cabrone replied to alpine_saint's topic in The Saints
I didn't understand why we had to go waltzing off to Switzerland to play a few teams that we were never going to ever play competitively and weren't going to give us anything like the experience that we needed for lge 1. It all smacked of a jolly and the start that we've had would enforce this view. We should have lined up a string of blue square prem, league 2 and coke teams to get us battle hardened and ready for another season in the english leagues. Instead of bigging ourselves up in Switzerland we should have stayed in SE England and got a much better pre season. -
We're all really disappointed with last night's draw but I think it's very harsh to hammer NA after only 4 games. You have to give him the season and see what he can do. For me the biggest difference between this season and last was the form of Ricky Lambert. An on form Lambert would have taken us to the top of this league and it's not NA's fault that he's in a slump. Now I don't know why he's off colour but I do think that if there is anyone who can get his head right its NA. Give the manager a break - he's only had a handful of games to change a shattered team and his record so far is decent. What is more the team appear to be finally waking up again. 'No point in crying over spilt milk' as the saying goes. AP is gone, get over it.

Being as this crazy club always goes and does the opposite to what I predict I'm going for 2-1 to Yeovil. COYS.

Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Saints - Post-match reaction thread
Cabrone replied to stevegrant's topic in The Saints
LOL - this club is mental. I give up predicting how we're going to do. Delighted with the 3 points and fingers, toes, arms and legs crossed the team can push on from here. They ARE good enough to get top 2 if they apply themselves. -
I'd have Holmes in next game. With our forwards not able to buy a goal at the moment we must give them as much decent service as possible and Holmes is the best crosser we have. He might just be able to provide the service which kickstarts Ricky back into life.
-
From the comments on here: Sounds like at least some parts of the team are starting to fire whereas in the previous weeks none of it was working. That's a big positive. Hammond and Puncheon need to take a look at themselves, start digging in and producing the goods. However by far the most important message coming from yesterday is that NA is already getting to grips with what he has and how to make it tick again. The subs sounded intelligent and the half time talk must have hit the spot. Whilst the players are important the manager is always the key. Fingers crossed we have landed a good'un in NA. I hope so.

Time to accept that it is unlikely we will go up
Cabrone replied to Thedelldays's topic in The Saints
Still far too many games to go to rule out promotion. If NA can get a win out of these players and get their confidence up then they are good enough to go on a run. We are still in a much better points position than we were last season so plenty of opportunity yet. Top 2 is looking quite difficult though. -
That's not an excuse though, the players should be professional enough to get over it and roll their sleeves up for this season. Their response has been pathetic. As far as the winger issue, yes I think it has been detrimental but not enough to explain 4 straight losses and next to no goals. No, the players need to take a lot of the blame for this and AP needs to take a fair chunk of blame for a powder puff pre season that reeked of arrogance and complacency. We can still turn this around, 1 win could spark us back into life and I sincerely wish NA the best of luck. Either he'll get this shower of prima donnas licked into shape or we could see a lot of departures in the coming months.
-
I'd imagine a week ago MK would have been thinking 'finally - after all the defeats they are ready for the taking'. Now they are probably thinking 'New manager - oh s**t'. No excuses - we have the players. 3 points please.
-
I didn't want AP to go because I think he could have achieved top 2 but that's history now and I've warmed to NA. Standing up for Scunny's compo was an honourable thing to do + he has a proven track record in this division playing decent football. Fingers crossed he can kick start this team back into life in the next 2-3 games and go on to have a serious tilt at top 2.

Confidence. The only difference between the team that spanked Rovers 4-0 away and lost 2-0 to Rochdale at home is confidence. We have the players - we just need to get the performances out of them.
