The Sunday Times - Southampton put up for sale at £250m

April 29th 1978, my 15th birthday. Saints V Tottenham on the last game of the season and Saints were promoted back to the First Division. It was a very boring 0-0 draw and as long as Tottenham didn't lose by a cricket score they were also promoted. The thing about that game wasn't the fact we were promoted but walking down Archers Road to The Dell I was set on by few Tottenham fans and got stabbed in my shoulder. After getting away from them and getting into the ground I showed a steward my shoulder. He took me around the pitch to the St John's people who cleaned me up a bit and offered to take me to the hospital which, I refused as it wasn't a deep cut and I didn't want to miss the game. When leaving the first aid room which was under the stairs from were the players came onto the pitch the players were just coming down them. It was the loudest I ever heard The Dell. For some reason I've always hated Tottenham since then!

My rugby team (Harlequins) have had the players phoning season ticket holders. I've not had one but my wife has.

According to the Premier one Newcastle are the top but, when it comes to the whole thing Man Utd are top out of the Premier League teams!
-
? Lost me there!

Pre Premier team! Shilton - best shot stopper I've seen. Wright - excellent with ball at feet and a class defender. Ball - one touch master. Moran - under rated, had pace and knew where the goal was. Keegan - think he would complement Moran perfectly and vice versa. Since Premier. Niemi - probably the best keeper we've had in Prem. VVD - best defender we've had in Prem. Lallana - great close control. Mane - not just his speed but has a great eye for goal. JWP - may not be the best player in the world but think he would do good job in this team.

St Mary's was the first totally flat pitch (at least) in the premier league!
-
So Saints hold about 19/20 records. Is that a record?

-
First (maybe only) team to have a goalkeeper substituted in a FA Cup final.
-
First club to have a competitive match using flood lights. The only team from the Southern League to reach 2 FA Cup finals and the last team from the Southern League to reach an FA Cup final!

Glad you got a pic of the smoking monkey. I'm sure my wife thought I was mad when I told about it! -
Played well first 45, shame about the second!

Sign of a great team you know. Play badly but still win (where's them smile's)!

Sub:- Flowers, Mills, Ruddock, Lallana, Armstrong, Case, D.Wallace, Crouch, -
So we've won more games at their dump then they've have. In fact we've more games there then they have in total!
-
I'm sure I read that Saints wanted away fans travelling by train to enter the stadium via a tunnel from the station.
-
A very well taken goal. Would have been happy with a draw today so I'm very happy now!
-
Got my full backs totally mixed up. Was actually thinking of our cup winning full back captain Peter Rodrigues and got mixed up with our most successful full back (though not winning any with us) captain.
-
David Peach and Mick Mills!

So we're now just a stepping to "Wolves"! It wasn't long ago it was to the likes Liverpool, United and Arsenal.
