He is not correct in his assertion that the FA only overlooked him because of the cost of compensation. He has conveniently forgotten that they overlooked him because of the stench surrounding him over the court cases. He also fails to mention that it was certain members of the press that made him a favourite, not all supported him, neither did all fans.

Centre midfield for me, has a touch of Alan Ball the way he knows where he is going to pass the ball before he receives it. Very aware of what is around him. It is good that he playing different roles, that will only make him a better player.

Hi Phil, I am in Vermont today watching the rain wash the leaves off of the trees, and with this thread for company whilst the others sleep off their many bottles of wine

The slow build up play (via Wanyama) is the cause of our lack of goalscoring. When we quicken the tempo and introduce Gaston we will be fine. But as I have said before, statistically conceding no goals earns more points than scoring two goals in the history of the EPL.

Post Match Reaction & MotM: SAINTS 2-0 Crystal Palace

Agree, the only difference between this and the performance in the last two games was that we out scored the opposition. As you would expect, I see that as a positive! The team spirit, epitomised by the way we defend as a unit is going to take us a long way, all we need is a spark in the final third, bring it on Gaston. -
The season is rarely defined in the first ten matches

I predicted 55 points this season, no prediction on position, so on the moving annual total we are now on 47 points, calculated by starting with last seasons finishing points total (41), and taking off last seasons results and adding this seasons results. COYR

Post Match Reaction: SAINTS 0-0 West Ham

http://www.whoscored.com/Matches/719962/MatchReport/England-Premier-League-2013-2014-Southampton-West-Ham If you check out the player positions on this site, it demonstrates how WHam strung 6 across the middle of the park to stifle us. As many have mentioned they put great effort in stopping Shaw and Clyne getting forward. If just one of those chances had gone in with no other changes in the play this thread would be very different. Jaaskelainen was rightly MoM. It is far too early to panic yet the table after 10 games rarely resembles the table at the end of the season. Ignore the trolls! -
Very enjoyable read, I heard there is an update coming out with a chapter on last season

I am in Scotland today and was watching the end of the Celtic game. The group of Celtic fans I was speaking with could not believe what we paid for Wanyama, all said it was £10m too much. I trust our transfer committee know more than a small random example of the fans I met.

Gosport raised Steve Mills and Steve Foster who was also at Saints as a youngster,

More late goals, 88 and 90 mins. All done without running up hills in Scotland

Was it Sky suggesting we were not taking this seriously?

Plenty of Mike Bassett's at the ground, one in particular behind me. Back on formations and those calling for wingers, look at the report on West Ham. They play two wingers, had another on bench and yet in the reporters words ...... Generally Newcastle allowed themselves to be sucked into a scrap with a physically imposing, extremely direct, West Ham, whose finesse-lite gameplan served as a reminder as to why Tynesiders were so pleased to see the back of Sam Allardyce following his short stint in charge here. -
Exactly what I said to my mate at the end outstanding today

Glad to see so many recognised how good JWP was today. He looked gutted at the end that we did not win. Chambers also looked very assured. This is going to be a very different season to the last one, should be an exciting ride -
As above looked a different class. Lovely chip from Gaston and run from Osvaldo near the end, an early sign of things to come from these two
-
Hi Phil, was that shown on the channel out there? Two other instances in he first half I would want to see again, when Adam was bundled over on the six yard box when about to shoot, and Fonte being pulled back from the JWP free kick that went just past the far post?

Puncheon to Palace - Official (Season Loan)

Been doing that for some time. If we replace him it will be with a left footer as the set up requires the wide players to come inside to create the space for the full backs, which Punch did very well linking up with Clyne. -

At the end of last season when J-Rod was playing as the left of the 3 in the 4-2-3-1 formation, as soon as Rickie pulled out to the left J-Rod would move to take up the role in the centre. Probably why Merson thinks we play 4-4-2! Earlier in the thread there was a link to a report saying that Osvaldo prefers the same role as J-Rod plays above.
