  1. That tackle on Sterling when they were 3 on 1 was ridiculous! He was picked up in the Guardian as one of their transfers to watch this season. Normally the Saints youngsters they pick out on there do nothing. Not this time. He will be a superstar. Can already see him at Bayern, or one of the big Spanish clubs, he is that good.
  2. After a number of appeals process, and thanks in part to Saints signing Mara, Bordeaux were reinstated in League 2 on Tuesday. Their first game is tonight, at home to Valencienes, and to celebrate, all tickets are free, and season ticket holders get a free drink in the Stade ( non alcoholic beer due to French regs ). Come watch Bordeaux v. Valenciennes - it's on us! | Girondins.com
  3. I was volunteering in the press box for that one. Sat right in line with the Bale free kick and thought, blimey that keepers got his angles all wrong for that one. The Stadium is owned by Bordeaux council, and they are prepared to waive the €5M a year rent to help the club survive this year. Apparently the running costs were one of the reasons they lost so much money. They had a great team, and won L1 at the old ground, but by the time they moved to the new ground, the team had been sold, and they never really invested in a new team to fill the new ground. If they do survive this year, they will only open the lower tier .
  4. Saw Bordeaux play once this season, they were dreadful, but then their worst player in that game, Adli, has just signed for AC Milan, so probably best not to judge anyone on the basis of that. ( just checked, and he was not in the squad that day) Bordeaux are up at the appeal court today to see if they can avoid the L3 equivalent League . One of the factors was being able to raise €14 Million in players sales. Looks like we have helped them to achieve that. If Bordeaux do avoid an extra relegation because of this, I will definitely ware a Saints shirt next time I go to watch them. We may have saved their bacon.
  5. Thanks for that, just checked ITN and it was the start of the 70/71 season, so I would have been nearly 9 . Mind you, someone posted a photo of a 3 nil win at Ipswich in 84 on the Archive last week. I went to every single game, home and away that season and have no recollection of the game at all .
  6. I think the only way to compete on the wages other teams would pay is to give him huge bonuses everytime he plays above his age group, eg for the u23s, more if he makes the match day squad and even more if he gets on the pitch. Show him that he can make money and progress his career with us.
  7. I must have been 6 or 7 at the time, but I am sure I remember a double sending off at the Dell, in the late 60's. Maybe not, maybe it was just Sumerbee getting stick as he came up the tunnel, or maybe it was another game altogether. I just checked Duncan, and your book( 1885-1987) doesn't seem to have stats for sending's off. Was there ever a double sending off at the Dell in the late 60's ?
  8. Getting a bit MLG there ! Yes red cards came in later, but are now very much in the vocabulary. A few years ago, I watched a full replay of the 66 World Cup final, and screamed no at the TV when Banks went to pick up a back pass.
  9. One of my first footballing memories is seeing Dennis Hollywood and Sumerbee walking up the tunnel together after their traditional red cards .
  10. French news today having a big review of the problems at the Stade de France. The French police say 30,000 fans without tickets or with forgeries trying to get in. The panelists blamed the police for their reaction. Liverpool fans had paper tickets, where as the Madrid fans had electronic tickets, so no forgeries. I am amazed at how bad the organisation from Uefa was. I was a volunteer for the Euros in 2016, and the preparation was immense. I can't understand why the stewardship was so inadequate this time.
  11. When I worked at whitbreads, we would have 5 pints every lunchtime, at the pub across the road and we were given a crate of cans every month. If you opened one can in the office, instant dismissal.
  12. Up until the drop ball it was a nothing game. Two shit headers from Lyanco though ! Their 2nd goal should have been stopped in their half. Any time we threatened a similar move, Tielemans just gave away a free kick, but JWP played nice. Can't help but admire the way that Leicester break at speed. When Ralph took over, all the talk was of getting a shot of within 7 seconds of winning possesion. Now it seems to be 7 minutes. This is the big change that I would like to see next season, a few players who's first thought is to turn forward and get at the opposition . At the moment we give teams so much time to get the wagons into a circle.
  13. That was not fun Match Day 37 - Saints 1 - Liverpool 2 Match Day Comparison: Compared with last Season's MD 36 0-2 Loss at home to Dirty Leed, a slight improvement in Goal difference. -3 points; +3 GD Head-to-Head Comparison: Last season we won 1 nil and it all ended in tears -3 Points -2 Goal Difference. Next up is Leicester away . Vardy is scoring for fun, and Barnes is playing well in the space between the midfield and front line that we don't bother to mark anymore . We lost 2 nil up there and 3 nil at West Ham on match day 38, so scope for improvement there , but I really really doubt it.
  14. Interviewing for a top government job in private flat, with booze and loud Abba music with you wife present is an interview, apparently !
  15. Yes it was a depleted Liverpool team, but the whole club si so well drilled at its pressing game that, once they remembered this after 20 minutes, we could barely string 3 passes together. When JWP or Diallo tried to control and turn they had 3 men on the at times. Agree with the above posters that we should have been hitting the channels. The one time we did that right in the 2nd half resulted in a free kick to us and what should have been at least a yellow card for Milner. Yet again we failed to deal with a player floating just behind the front 2. This time it was Firmino, but the same happened with Coutinho, Mount and Erickson. This has to change. Earlier in the season we did this at Man City and Chelsea, so why not now ? Whoever is responsible for assigning markers at set pieces needs sacking . KWP on their tallest centre back FFS ! At least Redmond put in a shift for once .
  16. Love kdb, he is like having matt le tiss's skill 9n terrymc dermotts body
  17. The midfield is so fat up that the CBs have no help whatsoever when Brentford break. I was worried Ralph might pull a formation like this when he said that you can't man mark Erickson, He may be right about that , but you can at least try and get within 10 yards of him. Crazy set up, but a shame that AA wasn't a yard further back when that ball broke for him,
  18. That was a shitshow ! 2 1 to Palace, and Zaha has served an eviction notice to JWP, who must now leave his head . Match Day 0 Points +1 GD Head to head +2 points +5 GD This is based on the boy from saints figures above . This week it is Brentford away, which equates to the 2 nil win at Sheffield United. Game 36 was a 3 1 home win over Fulham, so if we fail to win a Brentford this season will be , from a statistics point of view, a pile of pants !
  19. Looking at the Guardian minute by minute on Monday night, they said that Brentford's 3 at the back made them vulnerable to attacks from the United full backs, and that everything was coming through Erickson, much as everything came through Couhtino and Mount for our two recent hidings. So for me it has to be FF KWP Bednarek/Lycano Sallisu Perraud Romeu JWP Diallo S Armstrong Tella/Redmond/Djenepo (for some pace) Broja ( they are all shit at the moment but at least he worries defenders ) That way you could always go 2 up and pay a diamond .
  20. I am a bit worried after this weekends results, I always feel that goal difference is a good indicator at the end of the season. Us Burnley and the dugouts are all roughly the same, Leeds are on minus 34 . It is going to be a nervous few weeks.
  21. That was a flat performance to say the least, although having said that , we were comfortable until Adams made that shit pass when a break was on to set them rolling for the equaliser. He was poor today. Other than the 2 cm s no one was above 6 out of 10 today. Bring on the end of the season , the players are already on holiday
  22. Match Day 33 are Burnley away (we won 0-1 at their place last season in the H2H) and a 1-1 draw with Leicester in the Match Day comparison. The comparison to last season is looking a bit more positive again, and we're tangibly doing comparatively better in the H2H and with some lower table teams coming up next we should expect to see both stats improve further. All I want is some improvement season on season and it's currently looking like that has happened so far... Match Day Comparison: Compared with last Season's MD 33 was a late loss at Spurs to a Var penalty call. +3 points; +3 GD Head-to-Head Comparison: Last season's comparison was 1 nil win to Saints so bad on this one as well +7 points; +9 GD Next match up is Brighton away, were we won last year, thanks to a late Var penalty . Last Season's MD 34 hard fought draw against Leicester. Lets just hope the team turn up for this one and not just go to the pier !
  23. Started well, until till Roberts had his Cuco Martina moment, worldy. After that , our shape suited their defend in an 8 and break plan. 2nd goal , Cork is stopping Fraser from moving, and is offside when then header comes in , so he has to be active, and so offside.
  24. Looks like this slipped through the net this week, a bit like the entire Chelsea attack ! Match day comparison Three more goals let in than away at West Brom , so 0 points +2 GD Head to Head + 7 points +9 GD This weeks comparison . Last Season's home game with Arsenal was a limp 3 1 defeat , while match 32 was a late Var 2 1 defeat at Spurs, so there is potential for some improvement here. Just can't see it myself .
