As ever it might just depend on clauses in their contract, that the club have to let the player know of any offer above a certain amount,or from a Premiership club. Even if the club are under no obligation to notify the player then it is naive to assume the player's agent and player will not be aware of the interest.Then of course we are in the "do we want to keep a disgruntled player" territory and all that goes with it.

Aren't all students 'poor' whilst studying ? I don't understand this obsession about students from poorer backgrounds - if this is your area of concern- frankly.If their education is going to enhance their earning potential as it is argued, they will be in the same position to repay their student loans,as those from other backgrounds.Why make such an issue of it ?

Tell them Father Christmas was mugged by a couple of skates coming through Paulsgrove. Actually share the op's annoyance as this time last year we had to buy a medium boys away shirt rather than a lb which was the preferred size.,we were told pre christmas "oh we might get some more in in January,you might be able to change it"...Come January the line had changed to no we won't be getting any more in.
