He wasn't manager long enough to really judge how good he could have become in the longer term. He seemed to know how to get the most out of his players, but that was only in in the short term (Tranmere aside), and on top of that he showed no promise in the transfer market (Uwe Rossler anyone?). Also his track record at other clubs is far from stellar. And as just one comparison, Ian Dowie did brilliantly in his first year with Palace. But it didn't take long after that for it to go downhill from there and for him to get sacked.

There are 100 other ways of doing it if he didn't give a toss about the club (which he knew he was leaving), like going into administration just a few days after the cutoff (which he did), or giving notice of administration to drag it out, or .....

That's not the point. By going into administration a few days earlier the 10 point penalty would not have carried over to L1, and we would have made the playoffs.
