He was telling people that his brother was settled at SMS, had just moved his girlfriend down and was not looking for a move. Now I suppose his brother could be lying but I think you will find if the club had wanted to hold on to him for another year there would not have been a problem.

Just back and I must burst a bubble. Davis is a good shot stopper but he is clueless when it comes to crosses. We played good football in patches tonight but we are going to get mugged in virtually every game. Ipswich came at us in the last 10 mins and we looked vulnerable, naive and short of options. IMO selling Davies (and I know he was prepared to stay) was the poorest decision made this summer.

I don't think he is a CCC player and that doesn't mean I think he is a Prem player either. At best he is ordinary.

Shame you cannot seem to present your point with a little more courtesy to your fellow posters. Yea sure Crouch was naive, sure his website utterings were cringeworthy, sure he was out of his depth in terms of running a football club but he is way down the pecking order of blame when we look at why we are where we are. And, at the end of the day, I have a little more respect for him compared to Wilde and Lowe. At least he has put some of his personal wealth into the club. He saved our blushes over the statue fiasco and probably - most importantly in my eyes - he is a fan who goes to home and away matches. Like I say none of the above makes him the right man to have his hand on the tiller but it is blatantly unfair to castigate the way you do.

The Premiership is now a bit like the last days of the Roman Empire but they don't know it yet as they prefer to believe what Andy Gray says on Sky.

TBH, although Hypo is a genuine fan, the thread was always going to attract vitriol. Like him or not, Lowe will forever be a divisive presence. Too much bad water under the bridge and, you can now say the same about McMenemy, Crouch and Wilde. The fans will only be truly united when every board member associated with this (once proud and respected) club since it became a PLC departs the stage.

A leopard never changes his spots and I don't think RL ever thinks he has been wrong about the way he ran this club in the past. I think the reason we haven't heard his voice very much is because he no longer tries to give the impression of being fan friendly. He has set his stall out with JP and the youngsters (no choice really) and to hell with anyone else. A bit Thatcheresque really but he wouldn't thank me for the comparison seing his politics are even more to the right than the "iron lady" (or at least they were back in 1997).

Crouch did himself no favours with this episode and it was ridiculous to hide behind Seymour Price at the time. I think the fans are entitled to know just how much we let Arsenal off.

Keep up mate, this thread is not about the decision to let him go; its about did we cash in (later) too quickly last season. I for one would like to know just how much money we let Arsenal get away with last season under Crouch. I don't think (unlike Bale) the club have ever owned up to the Walcott renegotiation.
