Two more young people stabbed to death in London. 5 people slashed in Manchester. It is almost a daily occurrence. How do you combat it? Nobody should be carrying a knife. More stop and search and harsher penalties for carrying? Longer sentences for convicted stabbers? Where do you start?
-
For all the sympathy I have for the protests, the Met says that they are being severely stretched. Not great when they have enough on their hands trying to deal with knife crimes etc.

I thought that Rupert Read spoke well on Question Time tonight.

I agree totally that some of their exploits have gone too far and they are ****ing some people of when they should be trying to get them inside.

It has been, but very infrequently. The worst case I can think of is the Yvonne Fletcher case when her murderer was allowed to walk away. I can see why countries sign up to the whole diplomatic immunity thing, but it can’t be right that people get away from facing justice just because of diplomatic expediency. Even if they faced investigation and trial in their own country, that would be something. In this case it would appear that it was a very unfortunate accident, but there ought to be consequences for the woman driving on the wrong side of the road. She is not even the diplomat, she is his wife. Why does she get to bigger off and leave the family without closure? I suppose it will be on her conscience for the rest of her life, but that doesn’t help the family.

It’s an easy shot to take the rise out of people because they continue to use products that are constantly mass produced for the society we live in. Just what Piers Morgan does. The problem is that it detracts from the message. It really doesn’t matter if someone is being hypocritical about their stance and wearing palm oil products or whether they are seen nipping in to McDonalds. It just plays into the hands of those whose vested interests are to do nothing. The bigger issue at the moment seems to be not what Greta Thunberg says, but by what method did she get to that particular venue. So what if she didn’t arrive in a horse drawn cart that was drawn by a horse fed on organic hay. A few more flight or a few more burgers will make no difference. It is wholesale changes that are needed and they will only come from increased education and understanding. Less whinging about hypocrisy and more questions about what changes we need to implement would be good.

So Donald isn’t going to waive diplomatic immunity so that Harry Dunn’s family can get justice for his death. You can imagine the Trump tweets if a British women with diplomatic immunity had caused the death of an American in the USA and hightailed it back to the UK.

Unless you are a member of the Flat Earth Society , it is pretty obvious to most people that the science is correct and human activity since the Industrial Revolution has increased the rate of climate change. Whether the tipping point is months, years or decades away, the issue is that we need to make radical changes to the way we live our lives. Just because other countries are sticking their fingers in their ears doesn’t mean that we have to do the same. Eventually everyone will follow suit because they will have no choice. Pointless point scoring does not help. It is very clear that everyday we understand more about the way we effect the living conditions of this planet and every day it becomes more obvious that our current way of life is not sustainable. The next election should be fought on the issues about how we live our lives moving forward in relation to the environment. Sadly it will be all about the major nationalistic preoccupation about bailing out of Europe (yes, one of the worlds biggest markets and right on our doorstep). Less trade with our close neighbours and more with people half way across the world - that should help the UKs carbon footprint Still, at least we will get our country back, even when, in a few years time, more of it will be underwater.

So I’m thinking if avocado on toast = the far left, does beans on toast = the far right? Also does the type of bread count? I’m assuming white bread right, brown bread left?
-
Wow! You can tell a society has progressed when a political jibe involves your choice of toast topping. Who thought an avocado could be so defining as indicator of someone’s political leaning?

This is the major problem with democracy. It isn’t the will of the people. It is the will of the people who can be arsed to vote or those allowed to vote. Then there are those who use it as a protest vote because they think that the vote will be a certain way anyway. Apart from having a referendum in the first place, Cameron made 2 major errors. 1 - saying that he would abide by the decision of the vote even though it was “advisers.” 2. He should have stipulated that he would agree to a leave vote if it was substantial, say 60/40. Technically we would be having the same amount of bickering if leave had won by 1 vote. A great deal happened over the last 3 years and we know a lot more about what leaving really means. If that was what majority truly want now, let’s find up with a 2nd referendum.

I suppose you define the current Government by your own leaning to the right. A number of moderate Tories have jumped ship because of the lurch to the right. I guess if you align with Attila the Hun you will think of the current Government as “pinkos.” -
They have only scored 3 goals in those 5 games. He has managed 1 assist though!
-
We had that in the 70s. I am sure you remember the 3 day week? Yet life went on. It is not a question of “them.” Global warming is effecting all of us and will do increasingly.
-
Yes it is the world economy but we can’t boycott everyone at once. Choose targets and hit them hard, then move on to others.
-
But we have to start somewhere, and if we don’t take a lead, how can we expect others to do the right thing? The movement has started, it will grow but it isn’t helpful when you have your own PM calling protestors crusties and people hanging effigies of a young girl off a bridge. We cannot afford short termism any longer but rather than blockading cities and ****ing people off, a better way of dealing with the problem from the ground up is a concerted economic campaign against specific companies. Once you start hitting businesses in their pockets you get attention from those who can make real changes. The problem is that it will take time for sanctions to bite and we don’t have much of that left before we reach the tipping point.

Perhaps the residents of D.C. clubbed together and built a wall to keep him in?
-
His recent Tweet should be enough to have him removed from office. He isn’t just a liability to his own country, but to the rest of the world too. He really seems to have some serious mental health issues.

Being told by my doctor that I am not a young man any more and the look on my kids faces when I told them that there was still sugar rationing after WW2 in the year I was born. Oh, and upon telling my wife that Ginger Baker had died was asked who was Ginger Baker? When telling her he was the drummer with Cream being asked who were Cream!

Political satire at its best Disappointed on her position on Corbyn taking over for now. We need to get Johnson out before he does any more damage and steady the ship before the next election. -
Manchester United, Tottenham and Everton all spend more on players than we do and all 3 clubs have had poor starts. Liverpool bought Lovren from us for a lot of money to improve their defence and look how that worked out. If the formula was simple every club would end up with the same amount of points. We just don’t have the right mix at the moment. We did for four successive years but still there was whinging. It just shows how well we did then and just how difficult it is for a club our size to either step up or maintain our position. There are clubs flying high at the moment that will be fighting relegation in 2 or 3 seasons time. It’s the way things go if you don’t have a bottomless pot of cash to spend.

As I said, I have been called in to a clinic on a Sunday and the waiting room was full. What about people recovering from operations and long term patients? Are they all kicked out of their wards at the weekend? I don’t know what you have been smoking Duckie but it seems a bit strong for you. Oh, and for months now my local surgery has walk in consultations for those with worrying conditions. Yes, a doctors surgery (NHS) open on a Sunday.

Indeed. It makes for scary reading. I don’t think that there is any doubt about the effect that we have had on the planet since the Industrial Revolution. A recent programme showed graphically about how our actions have accelerated global warmer far quicker than any natural changes in temperature ranges for some considerable time. I have every sympathy for the protesters although I think disrupting people trying to get to and from work will work against them. The state of the planet isn’t looking good for the 30’s onwards unless we all make bigger changes to the way we live. Whilst we have people like Trump in power that isn’t going to happen.

I am sure my definition of the far right is no different to yours or anybody else’s. Oh and Nick, I am not technically a “lefty” but yes, I do think that racists are thick.
