It is the same with golf, well all major sports really. You can't practice in real life situations every day, but you can practice until it becomes 2nd nature to succeed more often than not. Hoddle's view was probably skewed by the fact that he had a huge amount of natural ability and confidence. Most players don't have that and have to work at it. Hence the old adage "Pratice makes perfect".

I am 55 years old and in my relatively short life time I have seen a huge change in the climate/weather. The seasons have shifted and become more blurred. In fact we tend to have "weather" rather than seasons in many respects. I remember the infamous smogs in the 60s in which many people died. Thankfully those extremes have gone but we still breath in polluted air every day and they can't be good for us, let alone the planet. For any species to survive they need a sustanable eco system. Whatever your views about global warming, mankind is overpopulating the planet to the point where, in the not too distant future, the planet will no longer be able to sustain such a high level of human existance. The planet will die of natural causes eventually, but I don't think it is unreasonable to say that mankind is accelerating the process.

Agreed. Saw him play it live a couple of years ago in concert in Tunbridge Wells. Awesome and truely Christmassy.

I think, to be fair, that "legend" status is built up over time not a few seasons. Although he did a good job for us while he was with us, you can't really compare him to real legends like Ted Bates and Lawrie McMenemy.

I thought it was Forest away we beat in the final game?

Punches and a "headbutt" involved according to Talksport!

Growing up as a saints fan in the late 60's we were always hard to beat at home and easy to beat away from home. Ted Bates sorted that by signing Big John McGrath and we picked up away points to such an extent that we made it into Europe. We have been notoriously bad travellers over the years so it is great to see us winning and scoring loads away right now.

And there was me thinking this was a return to British Telecom!!!

I do agree that a book should be written about he last few years, but with all due respect to Duncan I think it should be wrtiien by someone from "outside" who could remain objective. I'd love to know the truth about what really went on and not something that was clouded by personal animosity.

Thing is DD (and this is not personal) I think that thread was very badly timed. AP had only been in the job a short while and was obvioulsy still getting his act together. But I do think there are some here (not you) who like to see us fail and revel in the negativity and it is interesting to see how they go quiet when we are doing well but start posting like crazy when we don't. Also if they can't find anything to moan about at SFC they will dig out something about a former employee of the club and slag them off. Oh well, you pay your fiver and usethe forum as you see fit I suppose...cheaper than a therapist! Care in the community for some.

I think this is the key to a good manager/leader. Get good people together pulling in the same direction. For the first time in a long time this is happening and the results are coming, but they help. If you are winning games even if you are not playing well it takes the pressure off. If you play well and lose the pressure is back on. But what is evident is that the time that Lawrie McMenemy was afforded to build up SFC is no longer a given. It seems like 2 seasons is your lot. I can understand this but with only two transfer periods a year it gets harder for managers to build a side that will find success relatively quickly. Some manage it but most don't. And those that find a quick fix often fail later. I'd like to see us stick with a manager for the length of his contract for a change, but I expect that Pardew will lose the support of many if we are not playing CCC football the season after next. I have been impressed by a lot of teams in our division. In years gone by football in the 3rd and 4th divisons was pretty dire. Cloggers and hoofers for the most part. A lot of the football played this year looks to be as good as anything in the CCC. This makes it harder for teams to get out of both divisions. For our part though I think our current team would hold its own in the CCC.

I agree there is still work to be done. However, after the lack of pre season I think that he has done a terric job so far and feel optimistic that there is more to come. Oh and by the way, I am not sh*t stirring, I am trying to redress the balance in favour of a decent manager who, so far, is doing a good job for us.

I still prefer Brands Hatch

After that silly thread a while back about not if Pardew gets sacked but when, perhaps it is now time to give the guy some credit. He has quietly gone about his job of turning us from a bunch of losers to a team that wins consistently. Sadly you still get the feeling that there are some on here who can't wait for us to start losing games so they can have a pop again though. We may not reach the play offs or go up this year (that -10 made a but dent in our ambitions) but so far, Pardew has done a terrfic job and deserves plenty of credit. Long may it continue.

Sh*gged that girl at the swimming pool who follwed me around instead of hiding under my bed when she called

Portsmouth fail to pay their players again...

Why is this on the main board? -
Why a late bid? We have a decent stadium and are not a million miles from London. I dare to suggest that the Dark Lord would have been camped outside the FA's HQ fighting our cause to host matches! (Awaits flak)

With the benefit of TV replays it is scary how often the linos don't get it right in real time. The key is always when the ball is kicked but it seems natural for the human eye to pick up the position of the player when he collects the ball. Quick players who time their runs to perfection often fall foul of "human" decisons.
