    Toby

Probably to Atletico. 12 months ago few of us had heard of Toby. He wasn't having a good time in Spain so we took him on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season (or Atletico had to pay us around 1.5M). His reputation soared over last season and I imagine that Atletico thought that they could get a lot more for him than we had agreed, hence the stalling tactics. We may well have already offered more than the original price but if Atletico don't want to sell him to us, what can the club do? We can't force them to sell.
  2. Even born-again Salisbury have got Premiership Bournemouth and Bristol Rovers.
  3. The Guardian, in a slightly sarcastic comment, says he's off to Villa... "Something of a coup for Villa, that, especially as Saints were able to offer Gueye a guaranteed starting place at Anfield for the 2016-17 season".
  4. They also give approx £2m to charity each year.
  5. They were interviewing David Dingle on Radio Solent last night. He was looking forward to next year and an increase in cruise traffic in Southampton of about 10%. He was praising both ABP (for the terminal improvements) and the Council (for the access improvements to the Eastern Docks). Didn't sound too unhappy.
  6. If you enjoyed them, you may like "Thomas Cromwell : The Untold Story of Henry VIII's Most Faithful Servant" by Tracy Borman. It's a very readable account of Cromwell's life based on documents of the time.
  7. Used to work with a guy who served in the Falklands. He said that the troops used to refer to the Falklanders as "Bennys" due to their somewhat unsophisticated ways.
  8. Europe's busiest turnaround cruise port. UK's most efficient container port. Can take the world's largest container ships. Voted best UK cruise departure port 6 years running. UK's leading car-handling port at 800000 vehicles per year. Contributes £990 million to the UK economy of which £714 million is in the Solent region. But P*mpey do have a new Gosport ferry...
  9. Don't buy a new car. Get one about 6 months old. Any faults will have been fixed and you'll save a couple of thousand quid.
  10. Met Eric Cantona at the Eurostar terminal at Waterloo. Asked for an autograph for my nipper and he was quite OK with that.
  11. It plays "O God Our Help in Ages Past" written by Sir Isaac Watts one of the great Hymn writers, who was born in Southampton.
  12. Spent a train journey from Southampton to Waterloo chatting to Barry Horne. He was playing for us at the time and was going to see a Harley St specialist about his knee. Very modest, quiet bloke with a dry scouse wit.
  13. Due to be announced this afternoon.
  14. If you don't speed, you won't be fined.
  15. He writes a weekly column and has named Jose Fonte and Ryan Bertrand in his Team of the Year. His Manager of the Year is..........Ronald Koeman. He said he was tempted to go for Mourinho but he cocked up Chelsea's Champions League campaign and he thought that Koeman deserved it taking account of what he inherited in August.
  16. The "skillful" players are much more protected by referees today. George Best was kicked all over the place but was still outstanding even on pitches that were like ploughed fields. Goalkeepers were fair game for big hairy centre-forwards, sometimes the keeper would end up in the back of the net with the ball. Many of the old hard men (Tommy Smith, Larry Lloyd, John McGrath) would have a job staying on the pitch today.
  17. Friday 30th October Tickets go on sale 9.00am tomorrow.
  18. Depends where it is. There's a small estate at the back of Winchester Road (Seagarth Lane, Malwood Avenue) which is now a mixture of council and ex-council. It's always been a quiet area and well looked after and they all seem to co-exist perfectly happily. Any houses that are put up for sale seem to be snapped up pretty quickly.

    Errol Brown

Sad to hear in the week of the passing of Errol Brown, the lead singer of Hot Chocolate. He was 71 and died of Liver Cancer. They made some classic pop songs including the iconic "You Sexy Thing" but they also did a lot of more funky stuff on their albums.
  20. It might help if I looked at 2014 instead of 2009.
  21. [quote=Lord Duckhunter;2182520They have the most MEP's & they've finished second in scores of seats, they ain't going anywhere . . Maths not your strong point? Tories have 26 MEPs, Labour have 13 and UKIP have 9.
  22. Will turkeys vote for Christmas? Starkly illustrated by UKIP getting over 2 million more votes than the SNP and ending up with 1 seat to their 56.
  23. Cameron's main problems will come from within. He can be held to ransom by his own backbenchers many of whom see him as insufficently right wing. He said in his acceptance speech that he wants to move more to the One Nation type of conservativism, which they will see as a move leftwards. Labour and the Lib Dems will both get new leaders and will go back to the drawing board and wait for Cameron to make mistakes. UKIP are a busted flush and will probably disappear. SNP are interesting. If they get a clear majority in the Scottish elections next year, we can expect a renewed push for independance. I can see Cameron offering some sort of federal setup where they have greatly increased powers but remain part of the UK
  24. Up until the early 20th century, the Home Secretary was required to be present at royal births to prevent the newborn being swapped for another (eg a boy for a girl).
