  1. In my experience, the older you get, the less you care about what other people think. Just do your own thing and sod 'em.
  2. Back in the 80's at The Dell a guy who had a season ticket behind me under the East Stand always arrived a bit late and a bit ****ed (in a friendly sort of way). We were playing Villa and were winning at half-time so he says "West Ham aren't as good as they used to be are they?". I suppose one claret and blue shirt looks much like another.
  3. If we're already promoted, they probably won't. They'd prefer a game where there's something at stake.
  4. Daily Mash, News Thump and NewsBiscuit. Always find something to make me chuckle among that lot.
  5. Non-payment of the Poppy Appeal money? How low can they sink?
  6. I also still have my slide rule which I got from the Green Shield Stamp shop in East St.
  7. According to the OED, "ruler" is also a verb. If you whack someone with a rule® you have rulered them.
  8. Just drawn Calgary Bay in the company sweepstake.
  9. There was an article in the Independent today about the Premier League wanting to set up an under-21 league so that their young players get regular games. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/green-light-for-u21s-league-to-replace-reserves-7622226.html
  10. Has Mafeking been relieved?
  11. There's a lot to be said for a good garden shed.
  12. Agreed. I thought he'd be awful but he's one of the better ones.
  13. No problem with it if it's only used terrorism matters. But who watches the watchers?
  14. Have you any evidence for this? I can't believe that any manager would accept a situation where he has to play a certain player every game. This forum is full of successful football managers who could do a much better job than Nigel Adkins.
  15. The Belfast museum is on the actual site where the Titanic was built The Southampton one looks like a shed tacked on to an elegant listed building. The logical place for it was the docks where it should have been combined with the old maritime museum from the Woolhouse and the Hall of Aviation. For once, I agree with dune.
  16. Were you out of loo roll?
  17. A few people were pretty confident of the result. The Labour guy was 50-1 on whereas George was 33-1. Due to a load of bets suddenly being placed on George, the odds were shortened and betting was, at one point briefly suspended. Nevertheless, a few punters walked away with £100k from Ladbrokes.
  18. Am I correct in assuming that the figures exclude the Oxlade-Chamberlain money?
  19. Transferring petrol between 2 containers in your kitchen while the cooker was on was not the most sensible thing to do.
  20. Courtesy of NewBiscuit: "Tanker drivers have called off their proposed strike amid fears any disruption they might cause would pale into insignificance alongside the chaos cabinet ministers have created with a few poorly chosen words. ‘We were all set to strike over pay, no, hold on, safety concerns wasn’t it? Yeah, safety concerns,’ said one tanker driver. ‘Anyway, then the PM advises people to go out and buy petrol they don’t need while Francis Maude recommends turning your garage into a massive fire hazard, and suddenly the country grinds to a halt while everybody has forgotten about us. So we might as well not bother now.’ Labour leader Ed Miliband was unwilling to comment on the cancellation of the strike while he was queuing to fill up his scooter, but did complain about the 20% increase on the price of his lukewarm ESSO sausage roll."
  21. You mean the 62% of people in that constituency. Hardly a handful.
  22. Good to see that Howling Laud Hope got 111 votes. More seriously, Galloway's no fool. He did this before in 2005 in London, overturning a 10000 majority. The turnout was over 50%, very high for a by-election. Judging by the TV coverage he seems to have captured the Asian vote, bit ironic as the Labour guy is a Pakistani Muslim.
  23. But people aren't going to actually use any more fuel than usual. So the revenue to the government won't change, it'll just have an uneven distribution over a few weeks.
  24. Not really. We use Hoyers who also do a lot of the fuel companies haulage. The petrol companies switch hauliers at the drop of a hat as one undercuts the other, so the drivers have little security and, if their company loses the contract, they have to move to whoever wins it. This can mean lower wages and worse conditions. I was talking with one guy who is in 6 different pension schemes as he has had to change employers so often. He was also on a rolling 2-hour shift change. So would start work at, say, 6.00 one week and 8.00 the next week then 10.00 etc through 24 hours. Not too good for the health or family life. Not something I would do.
  25. Agreed, there is a bit of learning curve but, if you just want internet, e-mail, office apps and photo stuff, it's good. Also got a good torrent app (not that I condone illegal downloads). It's so much slicker than Windows on the same-spec machine, it's worth a bit of effort.
