  1. Another rule of thumb is which side are the posts. They're normally on the "owners" side, but the deeds are the definitive answer.
  2. There's a difference between who we would like and who we could actually get. No Championship side with any playoff ambitions are going to sell us one of their best players, so that probably rules out Snodgrass. Sharp may be a better proposition. Do Doncaster need the cash?
  3. Weren't they mainly mercenaries? And didn't he say (paraphrase) "I don't know what they do to the French, but they bloody terrify me"?
  4. I've always found the French to be OK (apart from Parisians). I like their slightly anarchic, pragmatic approach to life and, if you make a bit of effort to speak the language, they usually very helpful. One thing that I have noticed is the level of service. Shop assistants always greet you with "bonjour" and say "au revoir" when you leave. You can usually have a taste before you buy cheese or fruit, the quality is usually very high.
  5. As us sad old gits have being saying for ages, exams are getting easier. Hearing that woman saying that her exams had so little content that she was amazed that they were accepted only reinforces that view.
  6. Dimi has signed a 2-year extension to his contract and will be T20 captain.
  7. A bit cruel. Dave might be a daft old sod at times but his heart's in the right place. An outstanding youth coach. Saints youth team walked the league, scoring over 100 goals. He brought through players like Shearer, MLT and the Wallaces. Both Shearer and MLT say he was a key factor in their success, indeed, Shearer gave him his first England shirt as a token of his thanks. He kept us up in his year in charge (the year of the Man U "invisible" shirts game), despite having to cope with his wife's serious illness and was rewarded with the sack.
  8. I see that the Dorset Dyslexic Society are commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Poole Harbour.
  9. You would have thought that, as a Doctor of Medicine, he would have taken better care of himself. Tremendous player, died much too early.
  10. Agreed. Our house being nearly 100 years old, the doors were original but with with many coats of paint. Sent them off and they came back stripped to the wood and in surprisingly good condition.
  11. In my seat (Row 5) under the East Stand at The Dell when some donkey whacked the ball into touch which hit me square on the nose resulting in a copious nosebleed.
  12. The estimated cost of the Royal Wedding to industry was about £5bn whereas today could cost £0.5bn. But at least the government is on the right track with rising growth (oh, it's not), borrowing less (oh, they're increasing it) and falling unemployment (oops, it rising). So less tax revenues, more spent on benefits.
  13. I was going to Paris on Eurostar with wife and son. Got to Waterloo and realised I didn't have the tickets. Cost me £45.00 in total for replacement tickets (but my son did see Eric Cantona lurking in the booking hall and got his autograph).
  14. I would say 2 pages. The first page is all important, it will decide if the person reading it will bother to go any further. Be concise, put all important information on the first page ie. recent employment history, main qualifications etc. Don't waffle, don't lie but accentuate the positive.
  15. Saw him at Wembley Stadium in '88. Came on at 6pm finished at 10.30. An experience not to be missed.
  16. The bloke behind me was singing "we can see you mincing out" as the Brightons fans started to leave after the 3rd goal.
  17. Agreed. As the state is paying them, they should work for the benefit of the community, doing work that would otherwise not be done. They should not be effectively subsidising a private company. I'm sure that small shopkeepers will be delighted that the government is giving their competitors free labour.
  18. Didn't they do a cover of the Beatles' "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" ?
  19. Many years ago myself and a colleague had to give a demonstration of some technical equipment to Terry Duffy who was then leader of the Engineering Union and was visiting the company. He was a very affable bloke and when we finished we said jokingly "Don't we get a tip then?" He said "I'll give you a tip. Stay away from women, they're nothing but trouble".
  20. Breach of the Peace is a very wooly law. You can be arrested if, in the opinion of a police officer, you remaining where you are is likely to cause a breach of the peace. It's not a criminal offence, more a preventative measure.
  21. Jolly decent of them to show their respect on Armistice Day. Near the Cenotaph as well.
  22. Presumably this was the infamous Portswood Link - a motorway standard road into the centre of town. It was eventually modified and downgraded and became Thomas Lewis Way but for many years in the 70s a lot of properties in Portswood and St Denys were virtually unsaleable as it was planned that the road would pass nearby.
  23. I think it's late 80s. The chocolate boxes had gone and the Milton was one big terrace. Also the other picture I posted from the same time shows the Lower East Stand when it was divided between bench seats at the Milton end and terraces at the Archers.
  24. He can't be in the EDL because his neck isn't wider than his head..
  25. What's your wife like then?
