The only decent christmas song ever written is Fairytale of New York by The Pogues/Kirsty McColl.

All the rest, without exception, are utter sh1te.

Even FONY seems interminable nonsense nowadays. I think it's jaded with age, or maybe that's me.

Anyway, I agree with the second half of your post.

PMSL at anyone liking The Darkness's Christmas track.

Best:

Jona Lewie - Stop the Cavalry

Flying Pickets - Only You

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - The Power of Love

Bing Crosby & David Bowie - Little Drummer Boy

Bo Selecta - Proper Crimbo

Worst:

The Darkness - Don't let the Bells End

It's all good fun, apart from that last one.

One of my favourite pieces of Christmas music is A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten. It features a boys' choir (trebles) and harp.

To me the true sound of Christmas is carols sung by a cathedral choir.

I like some popular Christmas songs done by well-known singers, but I hate it when shops start playing them in mid-November.

Have you heard the Hely Hutchinson Carol Symphony? It`s very good. It`s on this CD with Vaughn Williams "Fantasia on Christmas Carols" and a lot of other evocative Christmas stuff.

Hate: Any song you hear in any store. It's all commercial sh*** and 9 times outta 10 I will walk out - makes me wanna puke. Really can't abide any of them. Aarrrrrghh.

Xmas songs that are half handle-able:

Peter & The Test Tube Babies (Feat GBH) - I'm getting p*ssed for Xmas

The Business - Boll*x to Xmas

UK Subs - Hey Santa (a cover of the song by that Aussie bloke)

Fear - F*** Xmas

Wat Tyler - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

Suburban Filth - Xmas is a pile of sh*t (Live version)

Some of the stuff by The Yobs off of their Xmas albums (The Boys under another name)

Crass - Merry Crassmas

Macc Lads - Jingle Bells (not great but at least it's ripping the sh*** out of it)

+ umpteen odd obscure Punk songs that 99% of you won't have heard of! Trust me - they are all better than the sh**** you hear whilst walking round Asda.

Do I detect a theme here??

American indie slow-core darlings Low released an EP a few years back simply called "Christmas" which has some beautifully haunting cover versions of "Silent Night", "Little Drummer Boy", "Blue Christmas" and others, as well as a few of their own compositions. It is phenomenal. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Christmas-Low/dp/B00002R0SK/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

Conor Oberst did a Bright Eyes Christmas record too, but it isn't a patch on Low's effort.

Also of note is the Phil Spector Xmas compilation with lots of tunes given the wall of sound treatment - very good even if he is a murderous control freak nutcase.

Chris Isaak did a good christmas record a few years back which I have somewhere, think he did a cover of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" with Stevie Nicks.

Oh and a friend last year gave me a few hip hop Christmas albums, which are great fun. "Christmas On Death Row" is mostly Suge Knight's weed carriers on filler duty (like 6 Feet Deep murdering "Frosty The Snowman"). But Snoop owns the record with the frankly superb "Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto" (ft Dat Nigga Daz, Nate Dogg, Tray Dee and Bad Azz - lol).
