Saga and Greg

Last season, we couldn't afford their wages and we loaned them out. This season, we've been told we don't have to sell anyone unless they don't want to stay and fight for the club.

Assuming that we can't sell Greg or Saga by the August deadline, what do you think the club should do with them? Loan them out again? Play them? Or let them rot in the reserves until January?

My first instinct would be to play them. They're quality. However, there is a vocal bunch on here that don't want players playing for the club if they're not interested.

What do you reckon?

I agree and the more thay bang in goals for us the quicker they will come to bigger club's attention but both men don't seem to have the right attitude (despite being hansomely rewarded) which is disappointing.

If those two leave, who are we left with to play up front?

I think Matt Paterson will be very useful this season, but he needs to be playing alongside someone with experience. Stern John would have been ideal, but clearly that's not going to happen now...

Thanks for the info, Steve.

I think Paterson has shown potential so far, but I'd be concerned about not retaining one of the other three experienced players, or bringing in another, to help him along.

Is Neil Shipperley still around?

Did you mean to ask 'Is Neil Shipperley still round?' ...! ;)

We need a big lump for this division and someone with pace/guile to play off them - so lallana, patterson may play decent supporting roles but they/we need a focal point. fryatt got most of the goals for leicester, but all the heavylifting was done by steve howard.

Usually depends on what it is doing for the morale of the team. I'm not sure about Saga anymore, but Rasiak as out and out goalscorer is better than what else we've got. If playing him means we win games, then it's the right decision. If it p*sses the rest of the team off so we lose games, then it's the wrong one. Only AP can judge that.

No brainer really; if they're still here, get them in the team, as they'll both score goals in this division.

Sadly, I think they will both be gone by the start of the Championship season. I guess we just have to hope that Pardew already knows this and has lined up suitable replacements for them.

The issue this season is not finances but who is willing to start the season in L1 on -10? I wonder what kind of player -young/exeperienced, championship/L1- would be willing to do this, bearing in mind we have stability, ambition (albeit the extent of that ambition is unknown) and a first-class setup (including manager). For instance, Leeds were able to get Swansea fav Andy Robinson despite the fact that Swansea were L1 champions and what turned out to be a division above Leeds (he joined Leeds before their loss in the 2008 playoff finals).

I reckon any current L1 player -barring perhaps Leeds- would be willing to move to us; I also think we would have a decent shout for most players in the smaller championship sides - blackpool, doncaster, perhaps barnsley.

Time for Pardew to show his nouse here. If nobody wants one or both of them, he needs to get their a*ses in gear. They are both on big wages and should be in the first team in L1. It's not like the club is holding them back, if they stay there is no reason for them not to give it 100%.

If they stay, they need to realise it's because they weren't good enough to get a move somewhere else, and or their wages demands are too high.

I'd be happy to go into this season with a fully motivated strike force of Ras, Saga, Pato and Lallana (please can we stop pretending he is a winger)

Paterson is off if he gets the chance

If they stay they need to play.......if at least to put themselves back in the "shop window" for January transfers...........they are both overpaid for what they produce.......and presumably the clubs in Championship know that and are steering clear of their wage demands. Wouldn't be surprised if they move back abroad...........the good thing is 3 new players of half decent quality could be brought in on the wages they earn so lets just wait and see

You'd presume (hope!) that Pardew has the sense to know both tese two plus Stern John may well be off, so has some targets lined up to fill the void. If all 3 go (which is a strong possibility) then I think we'll certainly need 2 new strikers in to replace them, plus sniff around the loan market aswell. Think Paterson will do a decent job for us this season though.

I think Camara is available on a free, however, I do not know what his level of fitness is currently like; the other young saints player that could also prove good for us is Jamie White.

is that inside knowledge or a guess?

Stating the feckin' obvious I'd have thought. ANY of our players will be off if they get a decent offer, Kelvin aside. The difference being there are apparently clubs interested in John, Ras and Saga, whereas I can't see how any clubs will have been excited by Paterson.
