Gigersaint Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 Noticing how many people have tattoos of their football club on them I wondered how many of you have a Saints tattoo. It was something I considered several years ago to add to the few I already have but to this day I still haven’t got one myself. Further to the usual negative comments you hear of having a tattoo, it is always football club ones that appear the most taboo, main comments usually being because of where you have them, how well the tattooist can do them, and trouble that can be found because of them. Does it matter where on the body it is? Can a local tattooist really do them that badly? And do they really attract the unwanted attention of trouble from rival fans when you’re out of the local area or on holiday abroad when your tattoo is on display?? For those with a Saints tattoo, where on your body do have it, what design do you have and how big is it, where did you get it done, and are you happy with it and has it ever caused you any grief, home, abroad or otherwise? Would be interested to hear other peoples views who don’t have tattoos either.

Not really ... as Bill Shankly once said ... something along the lines of ''you can change your wife/girlfriend/boyfriend, you can your political beliefs, you can change your religion, but you can never ever change the team you support" Therefore getting the name of some soppy tart who is likely to dump you tattooed on you is far more taboo I haven't got a tat but have occassionally thought about getting a subtle halo stickman, but where to put it? Very top of the arm or shoulder blade? Not on the lower arm where it would be on permanent display (I always wear short sleeved shirts), as I do think the whole concept of tats a bit tacky and chavvyish
unionhotel Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 (edited) I had a Saints tattoo on my my left arm done in the early 70's and thought it was really cool. The trouble was that a couple of months after it was done Saints changed their crest so now I'm stuck with the Hampshire Roses that no one recognizes. Big mistake! EastleighSoulBoy Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 I had mine done when the crest was changed in the early 70's (73?) Anyway, it's on the left forearm and was done by Zak. He added his usual 'floral flourish' under the name and did squeeze the lettering in a bit. The nearest I came to regretting it was on the Tuesday after the '76 semi, when we played at nottarf. Some friendly skate told me he was going to cut it off! It's looking rather dated now and the colours have faded over the years but I'm sort of 'attached to it'! Might be a little bit strong -- but it's the ones who have something in "chinese" tattooed on themselves make me smile -- how the hell do you know what it says to a chinese fella? Probably means something like "Big Dog's Brown Excrement". They all look like a dirty-blue smear after 25 years anyway. And as for Amy Winehouse -- the scribble she's got on her looks like something off the cover of a 12 year old's school excercise book.

Wes Tender Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 Nothing like judging a book by its cover ay mate!!! Which is the entire point. Yes, people will make judgments based on whether somebody is covered with tattoos, piercings, shaven head, etc. And if somebody judges another by their outward appearance, let's also examine the other side of the coin and ask quite what the tattooed, pierced, shaven-headed individual is trying to say to others too. Until one gets to know a person as an individual, it is outward appearances that make the first impression, what we wear, how we look. Pardon me if for example I make a judgment call on John Westwood that he is a total and utter pillock based on how he presents himself and that isn't just because he is a Skate. I'm sure that if we had our own version of him, my impressions would not alter.
Deanovski Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 (edited) as bad as it is though tattoos are now becoming fashion, and there is the difference with how you dress and present your self with your tattoos if you get me. i think you could probably get the saints crest for about 60-70 i would think. Wes Tender Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 THE TATTOOED LADY (Paddy Roberts) Well I was a bit of a lad I admit, My past was a trifle shady. Until in the end I went right round the bend And married a tattooed lady. I immediately saw there were pictures galore, On ev'ry available corner As I studied her frame, very soon I became An expert in flora and fauna On one of her feet, you were liable to meet A Master of Hounds in his habit. While right round her waist, in impeccable taste, Was a python devouring a rabbit. On the back of each knee was a small chimpanzee, On her thigh was a Knight of The Garter And just for a laugh they had put on her calf Eight bars of the Moonlight Sonata One evening I found as I ambled around I was feeling an absolute Charlie 'Cos I couldn't be sure if the sketch on her jaw Was Picasso or Salvador Dali I loved all the ships on one side of her hips The view in Peru on the other. But I was struck dumb when I found on her tum A caricature of her mother Well this was much more than a man can endure, Though I made the most earnest endeavour. So I scuttled away, and I'm happy to say It was Ta ta tattoo for ever, Ta ta tattoo for ever, Ta ta tattoo (2 bar run) for ever

sperm_john Posted 2 November, 2009 Share Posted 2 November, 2009 ive got the saints crest on my right hand side of my right calf/shin on my leg ...its a little bigger than i would of liked, due to it being my first tattoo, never really had any grief about it, although at the oasis gig in hedge end it attracted a lot of saints nut cases as well as lot of pompey nutters, on holiday on a beach in the al garve once i looked to my right and some chap had exactly the same on his shoulder so we got talking, and about 3 or 4 blokes in my local pub all have saints tattoo's so its a standing joke to come to away games with us you need a tatt, other than that, its really down to the person whether they feel strongly enough to get one or not, like i said, if i could do it again id have a scaled down crest instead of full size one cos i feel it over takes my leg abit ... I do agree piercings are lame its just a bar, a tattoo can be so much more. You aren't seriously saying football club badges are pieces of art are you? A japanese whole back tattoo might be a work of art, but that thing we call a club badge? And whether it's a work of art or not, I wouldn't want to be saddled with it for the rest of my life, as my taste in art will almost certainly change over a lifetime. Even your club alliegance could change - what if the NC and ML hadn't come along and saved the club from extinction? What if the new owner hated red & white? Tattooing is a fashion - it went seriously out of fashion after National Service was done a way with, and will go out of fashion again. Why mark yourself for life for something as fleeting as fashion? But to be honest I can (just about) understand that having a tattoo representing what you think will be a life-long alliegance to a club means more than a bunch of chinese characters or temporarily fashionable celtic scrolls. I heard another version at a Welsh wedding I went to years ago. Can't remember how it went exactly but the Best man said in his speech that the groom wanted to show how much he loved his new bride by tattoing her birth place on his manhood. When he found out she was from -llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - he settled on where they first set up home together - Rhyl! It was old joke even back then and the punchline was almost delivered by postcard.
