Saint_clark Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 If we don't go up this season then yes, automatic promotion next season will be expected by everyone.

sadoldgit Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 It depends who we buy and who we play. We have spent lumps of money before (Redknapp, Burley) without the end result we were hoping for. The intent is plain to see, by buying Championship quality players were a making our intention clear that we want promotion. The sooner we get it the better but all Pardew and the owners can do it is to put together a team that can challenge strongly and that is what they are doing. What happens on the pitch is another matter. If we can manage a play off place this season I will be delighted after the start we had, but I am not counting any chickens and if we are still a Div 1 club next season I would not be surprised. But if we are are would expect us to be one of the leaders of the pack.
benjii Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 Redknapp? A couple of ****e cheap defenders and Camara on loan? What are you on about? Burley wasting money... yes, certainly. If you spend Championship level money you have to get into the Champ. Simple as that!
Cabrone Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 I'm hoping we can do it this year via the play offs.
The Kraken Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 by May 2011 is a must and a minimum now it seems big spending means big results...more so the lower down the football leagues you go we will do it im sure.. I don't think that's ever really been in doubt. Some of the more impatient suggested that promotion via the playoffs this season should be achieved, which was/is eminently possible but not to be expected. But even before seeing the transfers that will go through in this window, I think you'd have been hard pushed to find someone who didn't think the top two next season is a more than realistic target. Given the money we're now looking to spend, anything less than top two next season would certainly be deemed a failure.

I thought you were trying to make the point that we have spent lots before on occasions. £6m in the Premier League is clearly not lots. £7m in the CCC was though, I agree with you there. No one is saying spending "guarantees success", they are saying it raises expectation.

Of course, times change but I can't get over people talking about £1 million being "big money " in L1. For any club who doesn't have money, then it sounds a lot ..but who was our first million pound player ? ...and when was that ? ... Later on ..we paid £4 million for Rory Delap (another discussion) in 2001, and probably a dozen others for a million or more since then. (NOTE; CCC Swansea have broken a club record by paying 600K for someone ) When you have money it's only a mind set. Ask Abrahamovic at Chelsea. Messers. Liebherr/ Cortese understand investments I'm sure. As soon as we get back up where we belong the better. I think they see spending a million as an investment, and with the likes of Rickie Lambert and Jose Fonte - it certainly seems like money well spent. St Marco Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 I think we are probably going to lose Lallana in the summer and possibly Morgan too. If we can get rid of a lot of our old squad now or in the summer and replace with some decent people; then i think we will probably win the league next year. If you look at the whole squad now we have a vast amount of players who need to be moved on or who will be too old next season. About 10 players or so. That is nearly half the squad. If we replace them with players who are not injured every week and can do a job were be fine. I always expected promotion next season. I don't think were out of it this year, still a long way to go. But i think if you take Norwich,Leeds and Charlton out of the league next year and add the likes of Peterborough,Plymouth and S****horpe then we must be huge favourites. brightspark Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 If we don't go up via the play-offs this season we will walk the league next. I'm sure the 3 relegated teams are likely to feel that they have a great chance of promotion next season too. BUT, we are a wealthier and healthier side than almost every team in the bottom half of The Championship, so we shouldn't worry about them. We have spent loads of money for this division, and therefore promotion must and will be achieved by May 2011 without any excuses!!!
Block 5 Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 We really need to push on and go and a good run now. Morale must be pretty high at SMS. It seems pretty definite that Leeds are about to lose their talisman so I would expect to see their results start to slide a bit; today's draw against 2nd bottom Wycombe could be the start. The next month will be critical. An automatic spot is unlikely but not out of the question.
Under Weststand Posted 9 January, 2010 Share Posted 9 January, 2010 All season I have said that I think we will fall just short of a play off place, the signing we've made today, plus the possible other's coming in gives me hope that we may just scrape into a play off place. But if we don't make it up via the play off's this year, then I fully expect us to be challenging for the Top spot next year, & so will ML & NC as they are fully backing the manager. If we don't go up this year then the summer will probably see a lot of players being shipped out & 1 or 2 decent incomings once again.

I'd be suprised if we can't persuade Lallana to stay, as long as he's happy here. We can afford it financially, it's up to him whether he wants to spearhead the push for promotion or sit on the bench for Wolves like Surman. Same for Morgan, although we never know what's going to happen. We might suprise ourselves and make it up this season!
