Gareth Bale

He's improved in defence, but was still prone to the odd lapse - his ability on the left flank is all to see though, there aren't many players around that have the confidence and the ability to beat a player and put a quality cross into the box.

He ran our team from LB during our playoff season, and he kind of ran the game for Spurs at times y/day. Top quality player, he will play at a big big club one day.

is it me or has he grown at least 5 foot since he was with us? this might help him run like a dead cert at the national down that wing.

fair play to the lad, i was well impressed, spurs best player by a mile.

He looks to have improved considerably, which i think is more down to potential than anything Spurs have done for him.Best player on the park yesterday.........apart from that freekick at the end.

yeah, what was that free-kick all about??

His performance yesterday was no suprise to me, he dominated games from left back for us all season in the play-off season as he did yesterday.

Shame he wasn't available for the play-offs, could of been a different story.

that was derby's plan, kick the hell out of Bale and Jones so we didn't have them for the 2nd leg.

they were a really nasty team that year, glad they got shown up in the prem. for what they really were.

After watching the Spurs - Pompey game i was left feeling how impressive Gareth Bale has become as a player. Those who knock young players leaving Saints to pursue their careers at the highest levels need only to watch the likes of Bale.

By far the best individual performance in that match yesterday, nice to see he's regained the confidence to go past players and do it in the Premier League, even if he does look like a fridge nowadays with those shoulders.

Excellent performance, Spurs best player by a mile. Very good left sided player, unfortunately never likely to get to play in the WC as he is Welsh. Now who does that remind me of ;)

Not really. I have seen him played against Sweden in a friendly game on TV. His pace and tricks could even took him through 3 to 4 Swedish players in one occassion.

Even Cristano Ronaldo could not do that.

For me, there is no doubt that he can be a better player than bridge.

I'd assumed the "who does that remind you of" referred to Giggs.

Indeed though of course he's not to that standard yet by any means. However, during the match yesterday I was really impressed with Bale and hence Giggs came to mind with the Welsh connection and thinking what a shame Giggs was never able to play at the greatest tournament of all. Hopefully as Bale improves so will Wales but I'm not confident of that happening!

He still needs to improve on his defending but he has the potential to be one of the best players in the world in his position. No exagerration IMO.

agree completley, always thought he'd turn out to be world-class. He's only 19/20 at the mo isn't he? and he's already ripping teams apart.

Bale is a class above, I see a big money move dor him soon as Spurs are always an also-ran team. Wasn't one of the Italian giants monitoring him?

Juve and and Jose's Inter were very interested in a loan deal, when he wasn't getting a look in at Spurs.

big lol @ nottingham forest trying to sign him back in novemeber too.

Can't blame Billy Davies for trying, would add another ex-saint to there line-up.

He is though, far too good for CCC. People knock his consistency or defence frailties - but bare in mind he is still only 20. A lot of defending comes with experience, if this is the only thing he is lacking he is going to be one hell of a player. Though, I think if we are honest we knew that when he was at us anyway.

Shame he left, but don't begrudge him it and can't really blame him at all. Was still pretty gutting getting a text from a Spuds fan yesterday half way through the game "Cheers for Bale"

He was a Saint in red boots yesterday, played his heart out to beat the skates.

he is and was a good player

problem is...we (saints fans) seem to assume a player has failed or left too soon the minute he does not walk into his new team..or plays a few dodgy games..

baird, bale, theo, the list is endless of young saints players that have left and bettered themselves after a period of adjustment

Didn't see yesterday's game, but did see Spurs loss to Sunderland last week tv.

I thougth Bale was outstanding for the entire game and certainly has grown in physique and attitude.

He'd put ALL of that muscle mass on by pre-season 2008 a year after we sold him. First friendly I saw him play for Spurs when he came back from his ligament injury I couldn't believe it was the same player, he looked like he'd left the coat-hanger in.

I don't think his attitude has changed at all though.

He has the highest stats for lung capacity by a country mile in the Prem. In other words the fittest player in the Prem.

I thought Spurs were somewhat one dimensional.

Midfield to Bale

Bale runs at defender

Cross to 18 yard box

Defender clears

Yep - poor management from Saggy. Should have moved Modric into the centre earlier and put Kranjcar on the left to give Bale a hand.

Indeed, should have taken off Defoe earlier for Kranjkar and gone 4-5-1 so they could control the game.

They missed a link up striker yesterday, Modric could have done the job but they could have done with an on form Keane really. 4-4-2 is just too one dimensional a lot of the time, especially when the other team have an extra man in midfield.

Must admit from what I've seen of spuds this season ol' twitchy face has made some seriously strange decision.

Interesting that. At one stage yesterday after one particular run, he looked absolutely ****ged out, and stood with his hands on his hips looking like he was having difficulty recovering from the exertion for quite a long time. He was clearly struggling, and made no attempt to get back. Thats not a criticism by the way, simply an observation made at the time before I was aware of the stat you refer to.

I know somebody who is involved in the stats and sports science side at a Prem club and he asked me who I thought the fittest player was in the Prem. I didn't get it right but also wasn't shocked when he told me who it was.
