Best team of the decade....

A lot has happened since, and a great many players passed through the dressing room, so I considered ..what has been our best side of the decade?

I think it fair NOT to include anyone from the present Pardew squad.. so think back ..what is your team of the decade?.+ subs. if you like.

Interesting selection guys, but I thought I'd choose my own side - just for good measure, recalling I chose no MLT /Deano and no AP signings either.

Niemi - no competition. Best GK since Shilton.

Dodd - not the best technically but a great captain and role model 110% red and white.

Lundekvam - ( recent problems aside) 400+ games. Great CH when paired with Deano and Killer.

M. Svensson - would have loved to see him and Deano (who left Aug 2001) together. Took no prisoners !

Bridge - easily best LB since Benali and Peach. Great as an overlapping full back.

A.Svensson - ill used by Strachan, OOP - often out of position. On his day was top class! ](Is still good at 34).

Oakley - Good steady midfielder, we should have kept him after he came back from 1 year injury.

Delap - Do or die defenceman. Often forced to play OOP but did so willingly. (See how good he is at Stoke now)

Marsden - Journeyman becomes club legend. Partnership with Bridge was truly excellent.

Beattie - Blew a bit hot and cold, but knew how to score goals. (Even better when paired with Ormerod)

Pahars - 2-3 seasons of pure magic. Who can forget the Great Escape season !

SUBS; (if we have seven on the bench)

GK P. Jones- close ...just pips it from Kelvin Davis IMHO.

Bale - very exciting-but too short time to compare with Bridge but a better player NOW after 3 seasons with Spu*s.

Walcott - likewise. He's in another class NOW at Arsenal, but was great to have on our bench.

Tessem - utility player not afraid to stand in anywhere when asked. (Unfairly judged by some as an alternative to BT).

Baird - took a long time to get established but worth his bench place based on his last 2 seasons at SMS.

Crouch - from A. Villa reserve to England CF ( via SMS ) in one season. Love to see him on pitch at any time.

Surman - with club from 12. Still developing when he went to Wolves. wish he'd stayed.

Even though I majorly dislike the man, it's probably hard to look past James Beattie (02/03) up top.

Niemi between the stick also, seems a shoe-in, shame for Kelvis who has been a decent servant to the club.

Niemi, Bridgey, Dodd, Richards, Svensson, Pahars, Marsden, Oakley, Walcott, Beattie and Phillips.

Phillips? really?

Never really seemed to go right for him whilst down here. Would probs go for Crouch.

Pretty much agree with the rest

For me

Niemi

Dodd

Richards

Killer

Bridge

Walcott

Oakley

CMFG

Bale

Beattie

Pahars

Subs: Davis, Claus, Delap, Svensson, Crouch + Camara and Fernandes if we're having 7 subs.

What this all seems to prove is that we've been really weak in centre midfield for 10 years. Oakley was never better than average and he seems to be the only stand out choice, unless you move Marsden infield.

Before his Injury during the Strachan era Oakley was immense. Probably our most important player.

Davis

Ostlund Claus Jaidi Bale

Surman Spiderman Viafara Skacel

Stern John Rasiak

_________________ Best team of the football league

Not even close:

Davis

Baird - Fonte - Davies - Bale

Antonio - Morgan - Surman - Skacel

Rasiak - Lambert

IMO. I liked Ostlund, but he just never got into Burley's plans. Viafara had great energy, but couldn't pass a horse shoe to a magnet. Stern John had a decent season, but was the laziest f**ker I've ever seen in a Saints shirt. We suffered defensively for having him in the team and he seldom brought others into play.

For a pilot you are one thick c*nt. That team is sh*t.

Niemi

Dodd - Killer - Claus - Bridge

Walcott - Oakley - Marsden - Bale

Beattie - pahars

Sh*t central mdfield but tasty defence and attack.

Rasiak ahead of Phillips and Walcott?

never thought I would see a sentence that includes the words "Rasiak" and "ahead". Rasiak just ahead of a stunned slug maybe LOL Rather have Sperm John than Captain Slow.

Best XI of the decade without really thinking (can't believe no-one has include Le Tiss, even an overweight unfit Le Tiss is better than just about anyone else):

Niemi, Dodd, M Svensson, Lundekvam, Bridge, Walcott, Oakley, Bale, Le Tiss, Pahars, Beattie Subs R Wright, Baird, Crouch, Fonte, Philips, Morgan, Wise. Probably a bit weak in MF, but what the ****, it would be fun.

That was our 'Football League Team', made up of players who have played for us in CCC and L1. He posted his Prem team already.

HTH

FWIW, here's what I think:

------------Niemi-----------

Dodd----Claus--Killer--Bridge

Pahars--CMFG--Oaks----Bale

-------Beattie--Walcott-----

Subs: Davis, Baird, Fonte, Svensson, Viafara, Crouch, Lambert

Dean Richards should definitely be in ahead of Claus but not even a sub where you have errr Viafara for starters ?? Otherwise it's fair enough, I assume it is Anders Svensson on the bench.

Sh!t, knew i'd forgotten somebody! Claus deserves to start imo, him and Killer were immense together. Richards or Fonte on the bench?

Richards was brilliant, but Fonte has been a different class this season...

Yes, it is Anders on the bench, always thought he was underrated whilst here.

Fair enough opinion but I'd have Deano as my 1st choice CB, he was top, top quality and I was so hacked off when he returned to Spuds. Still I think he did leave us in about 2001 so not so easy to remember as most others.

And yes I liked Anders as well, very skilful. Maybe not the ideal player for PL though ?

Niemi, Bridgey, Dodd, Richards, Svensson, Pahars, Marsden, Oakley, Walcott, Beattie Crouch.

Reserves

Bale, Kelvin Davies (sorry, can't leave him out as there isn't an alternative), Claus, overweight leTiss, Phillips

And I reckon by the end of next season Lallana will get into this team in place of the aging LeTiss. (Time Travel, how I love it.)

Im with you on Anders, was a big fan of the bloke. Seem to recall SSN running a story linking him to Barca at one point - good as it was i did lol

****ed up, left field selection

Niemi

Telfer

Fonte

Paul Williams

Bridge

Walcott

Oakley

Guthrie

Bale

Lambert

Pahars

Anybody want a game?

That team would win CCC, and give an account in the Prem

Honorable mentions: kelvin/killer/claus/beatts/crouch (that'll do for the bench!)

Surely Pahars has to make any team and much as I like Lambert it is really no contest between him and Pahars. Otherwise fair enough, Crouch/Beattie is a marginal call I'd say but either on the bench would be nice :D

Surman's a good shout too, miles ahead of Viafara.

Still find it odd that no-one else has picked MLT, re-read the OP again, what have I missed? Is he not eligible or something? I know he wasn't the greatest in 01/02 but still would walk (or at least stroll) into any side that we could put out since that time. I guess I am being a dumb ****er and have missed something somewhere. :)

Am I right in thinking the last goal at the Dell was the only one he scored this decade?

That's what I thought, but he doesn't qualify for team of the decade having left us in 97.

Really??? I must be stuck in a time-warp! Couldn't bring myself to pick Jones or Davis. Keller played for us for all of about 3 games but he'll have to do!
