Gillett signs for Doncaster

Recommended Posts

So glad for him. I saw him many a time in the reserves, years gone by. He never seemed to do quite enough, yet his input was significant. He could easily have been one of those players that fell by the wayside. For his sake, I hope he makes a successful Doncaster Rovers career, and gives us a tiny bit of trouble when we play them. We cheer him, but we still beat them. ;)

It's the same with the Billy Sharp confirmation I think. There's no quotes on that page either. And the Stock page isn't looking good on our behalf. Looks like he's looking forward to the new season with Donny. Hopefully we can offer something he can't refuse! I suppose as the club captain he can't come out and say, 'i'm not bothered about pre-season because i'm leaving anyway'

Wish him all the best.

Football is a funny old game really. Not good enough for League One side Southampton, but able to get into the starting XI at Championship club Doncaster. My opinion? I think Pardew was right to let him leave. He was never really given a proper crack here but from what we did see, he hardly set the world alight. I certainly wouldn't pick him ahead of Hammond or Schneiderlin, that's f'sure!

Good luck, just not good enough. Always looked poor to me and as if he never knew his best position.

Bit harsh. There was one season (was it our last in the CCC?) when he looked to be one of our best players, as a battling ball-winning centre midfielder. Then he was left out under a new manager ,and then I agree, on the few occasions when he did play for us he seemed to have lost form.

The fact that he did well for Donnie in the championship on loan, well enough for them to be upset when he returned to us and well enough for them to re-sign him, surely implies he is pretty good, at least by Champ /L1 standards?

We failed to make the best of him IMO

K.

Pardew played him in the wrong position in the friendlies - at the front of a midfield diamond - for some reason. Why he did that I will never know, but it meant Gillett never touched the ball and he therefore had zero chance to impress. I think perhaps Pardew felt that his first touch wasn't quite reliable enough (every now and then he would miscontrol in a very dangerous position) to play that defensive midfield role, and he might well haev been right.

Allways fely a bit sorry for Simon, he was ignored by a succession of managers after we got relegated, final got his chance under the Dutch duo and looked to have taken it with both hands and then suddenly found himself at the back of the que again when Pardew arrived. I'll admit his form on rare appearences for us was patchy last season but he can hardly have been high on confidence when he'd gone from being a vital cog in the team to being behind Wotton for a central midfield slot. I think his size, or lack there of has always counted against him as he doesn't look like the combative ball winning midfielder he is.

Best of luck to him at Doncaster I think he'll have a good career at Championship level.

Totally agree, he was good enough a couple of years ago but he had no competition then, Pardew obviously has better targets and doesn't rate him, what we have now is better, let's forget him and move on.

He was awful. Tried hard, had a few games where he battled away and even worked well with Schneiderlin, but ultimately his footballing ability let him down. Although not much different to Wotton in that sense.

Not sure Sean O'driscoll signs players without having fotballing ability. Think the fresh start will do him some good. Good luck to him.

He had no future, so I wish him all the best at his new club. He must suit Donny's style of play better than our own. Must've been hard for all the players during the relegation season but at least he did his best. Good luck chap.

Not only no quote from O'Driscoll but no mention of him by SG either just a picture of him with some woman. This is beginning to seem a bit strange...

May be there has been a big misunderstanding, and he hasn't actually signed for Donny, just gone to Doncaster to visit his aunty :?

Paid for by the directors of the club outwith their transfer budget.
