Nothing at all to do with sentiment. Even if we get back to the PL in 2 years our only realistic prospect of at least competing once there is to have nurtured our own young players rather than play young players on loan. That said I'm only referring to players like Martin and Oxlade-Chamberlain who really we need to develop. It's a question of balancing the obvious short terms goals with the need to plan long term. Neither a difficult or controversial concept I'd suggest.

LeBenali Posted 16 July, 2010 Share Posted 16 July, 2010 Saw him in the League Cup Semi finals vs United, seemed a bit clumsy and short of confidence, but I guess he must have something for Mancini to plunge him straight into the 1st team (admittedly due to injuries). Would prefer to see how we get on with Martin and Seabourne as back up first of all though, I seem to be in a minority group of fans who rates the latter! John B Posted 16 July, 2010 Share Posted 16 July, 2010 You really think Markus will stay around if we don't? He will sale to the first bidder. I just think that the club needs time develop a team and players from the Academy who can hack it the Premiership and so I dont mind whether we stay in League 1 for another season and a year less in the Championship
jam Posted 16 July, 2010 Share Posted 16 July, 2010 Why? Because by the end of this season the novelty of League One football will have thoroughly worn off.
S-Clarke Posted 16 July, 2010 Share Posted 16 July, 2010 Why? If we fail to go up this season John, the team will be dismantled the manager and backroom staff will leave and we'll have to start all over again - Deeming the last 2 seasons on the playing side an utter waste of time, i don't think we can afford that. I agree that it is not ideal but the backroom staff will eventually have to go anyway I would have thought. Getting to the Premiership and Staying there is not going to be easy and will take time but we need to develop a team like that over the next two to three years . stu0x Posted 17 July, 2010 Share Posted 17 July, 2010 Won't happen. Which is a shame, because he's a very good player. If we could take him on a season loan with first option if we get promoted, it would be a superb deal, as I believe he has the potential to develop into a first choice premiership player, and the timing would be right for it to be with us. It's all very well having the Academy and developing 15 year olds, but we should also be looking very seriously at 19-21 year olds (particularly ones with PL experience, however brief) as they are the right age that we should be looking at to form the bedrock of our first team when we get there. Saints67 Posted 17 July, 2010 Share Posted 17 July, 2010 Tenuous link but we signed David Burke as our new scouting and talent identification manager from Manchester City, where he was responsible for talent identification in London, the south east and Europe. Maybe he took a list of players he could coax down to the South coast with him?
