Nice to see we're the best supported team in the division. Haveing St Mary's 2/3rds full while in the third division is remarkable.

particularly when you consider we would also have one of the best averages in the championship. Interesting looking at QPR, back in the early 90's we were always considered a club of similar size to them, yet depsite this being the best start to their season for ages they are only getting 14k.

The stat I find amazing there is, Brighton aside- despite the size of our ground, we still even fill it more than the other Mickey Mouse clubs in the league. Our grounds not too big for us, even in league 1.

because we are a relatively big town in a relatively highly populated area with no major footballing side within near reach (apart from the shower down the road and they don't count). Take Huddersfield it's about 14 miles from Leeds who have a 30K+ follwing so the clubs dispute the 'in between fans' Sheff W have another major club in the city etc etc.Plymouth should do better really but Devon really isn't footballing country.

Amazing really. Half of L1 have average gates below 6000

only 4 sides, Saints, S.Wed Charlton and Huddf'd above 14K. but our average is 21539

Saints already past 250K from 12 games, we will surely reach 500K by end of season.

most surprising thing for me is that Brighton as league leaders have only av. 7124 in a capacity 8850.

How will they ever survive in the Championship?

they are getting a new ground next season, 22.5k capacity.

I am amazed that Brighton do not sell out every home game... their new stadium will be a bit empty. They were always well supported at the Goldstone Ground!

they said that when we moved to SMS, they'll probably get crowds of 12-15k, maybe more if they go up.

Brighton will survive in the Championship David. Their crowds at the old Goldstone Ground were not much different to the Saints crowds at the Dell back in the late 70's early 80's. I would say their crowds ranged between 16-25k during that period, which was probably their most successful period in their history, as it was for us also. You need to remember they are about to move into a rather nice looking 22.000 capacity stadium, so all of their dorment support will come back i am sure.

If Saints get promoted this year i reckon our crowds will average 25k to begin with next season. If it becomes evident that we will be challenging in that League aswell the 'sold out' signs will be up on the ticket office windows quite regularly THEN the old chestnut about extending St Mary's will become a major topic of conversation once again.

22,465, disappointing today!

Compare that to other attendances today...

24k Birmingham vs Arsenal in 1st tier

25k West Brom vs Man Utd in 1st tier

14k Burnley vs Sheff Utd in 2nd tier

14k Coventry vs Ipswich in 2nd tier

22k Nottingham Forest vs Barnsley in 2nd tier

etc etc

22k vs Exeter City in the 3rd tier is very good! Especially as Exeter wouldn't bring as many away fans as Man Utd, Arsenal etc.

Of course those Dell figures you quoted were forced on us by having to convert to an all seater stadium and took the gates down to a max. of 16,000. when SMS opened up we got well above 25K average.

BUT Brighton's AVERAGE gate is only 7124. If they have such a big fan base?..why can't they fill a capacity 8850 ground - more regularly?

The Dell was not made all seater until about 1993. The Dell had a capacity of 24,000 when both us and brighton were in the top flight together.

As to why they dont sell out, simple The Withdean.

While we are the best supported in the league, I think the crowds at SMS are still disappointing. I realise we have 'lost' the Premiership hospitality element but we should be top 20's with the recent performances (excluding Brentford)

I think we will be, given time. I think (hope!) crowds will grow over the coming months, as people realise our good form is no flash in the pan. I can see us selling out in April/May, especially if we're in the top two. Next season in the Championship, I reckon we'll add another 2-3000 to the gate every week.

It's nice to know that our "core" support, even in the 3rd division, is still over 20,000. I know some will still moan, but I think that's pretty good.

PS. Who gives a **** about Brighton?

David, I am guessing you have never been to the Withdean. It is truly, truly awful.

The main stand opposite the clubhouse (yes, I do mean clubhouse - though its a pub actually) is completely open. Sitting there in the rain in any month from October to March would be thoroughly miserable...... the away fans' stand is worse cos it's so far from the pitch you can only really see the action at the nearest goal. There are a few covered seats in front of the clubhouse but not many at all. the players change in the sports centre about 100 yds away, then walk to the ground.

40,000? More like just over 20,000.

20,000 in the lower tier. They also have the upper tier, which hasn't had the seats fitted yet. Presumably because they've never been close to needing them. The official capacity is probably 20,000 but in reality it's a massive stadium with half the seats missing.

It will be 32,000 with the upper tier seats added, not 40,000. Currently 22,000.

When i went to the withdean last year i thought the away end couldn't be as bad as everyone says.

It is ****ing dreadful, i could barely tell when Hammond scored in the opposite goal.

Thanks for the input, Tony. I haven't of course, and it sounds as if I haven't missed much.

However the fact remains that IF promoted ...they will need more than just a new ground if their financing can sustain paying CCC salaries and drawing " better " players into the club.

You're right of course. I note that in Mc Menemy's "golden years " in the early 80's , we rarely got past 20K in home games.

Even 1983-84 (when we finished 2nd in the league behind Liverpool), we only had 4 games in excess of 20K.

The gates fell even more after he left , and hit an all time low (for Div.1 /Prem.games) during the Branfoot Era, when MLT was our only star.

Brighton surely are more associated (by older fans) with the old Goldstone ground than their present "home ".

But to put it into perspective, a very successful Liverpool side of the time was still only averaging around 30k in a 40k+ stadium. That year they beat us to the title their lowest home gate was 20k but they fortunately had a number of big local derbies to swell their average. http://www.liverweb.org.uk/season.asp?season=198384 they also got 9k at Anfield that year in the League Cup. We're always gonna be at least 10k behind Liverpool in attendances on a level playing field so maybe not so bad and just sign of the times?

You weren't there with Portaloo et al then. Then we had low crowds and almost felt lonely. Now in a division lower we are averaging about 4000 more....
