smithy Posted 14 January, 2011 Share Posted 14 January, 2011 Bompey lost tonight. The gap has widened, let's hope Fergies boys do Brighton and we win and go top. Then we have to stay there.

CWD Posted 14 January, 2011 Share Posted 14 January, 2011 (edited) I'm not sure that I wouldn't rather Peterborough lost tomorrow if we win. I think at the moment a 4 point cushion in the top two might be more valuable than top spot. Having said that I have waited a long time to see Saints top of any league... EDIT ignore me, this doesn't make sense. I was getting Peterborough mixed up with Hudders. A win for us, a win for Peterborough and Walsall beat Huddersfield would be the perfect day! So long as we win tomorrow I don't think there's much to worry about. Don't think we've ever been top in my lifetime.

Matthew Le God Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 Before the game Bournemouth could get 108 points this season, now they can only get 105 points. Before the game Saints could get 109 points this season, now they can still get 109 points.
Johnny Bognor Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 We need Brighton and P'boro to draw. P'boro have a game in hand, so if they beat Brighton and win their game in hand, they'd be 1 point behind us - too close for comfort. A draw for them would mean that if we won, we would extend our lead over them by 2 points, whilst closing the gap on Brighton by 2 points. A good days work. With Brighton playing bournemouth next week, another draw would be required, so if we win against Tranmere, we gain another 2 points on Brighton and extend our lead over b'mouth by two points. Wednesday play Charlton today, so another draw here please.

Faz Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 Top by tea time. Although I would actually prefer to widen the gap by Brighton beating Peterboro, I have a sneaky feeling the Fergie's return will spark a win for them.
trousers Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 The more I think about it the more I think we should want Brighton to beat Peterborough today. Automatic promotion is a bigger priority than winning the title. The best case scenario for us over the next, say, 10 games is to get a 2 or 3 game gap between us and the play off berths. Put another way, by March/April, I'd much rather be in 2nd place with 3 points less than Brighton but 9 points more than 3rd place compared to being in 1st place with 3 points more than Brighton but only 6 points ahead of third. If you get my drift. Of course, this being Saints we'll now go on a bad run and slump to 7th...!

It doesnt matter what happens there if we dont get 3 points today. Let's see what it's like at 5pm. Until then, important game today. Saints to win 4-1! It's as simple as that! EastleighSoulBoy Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 We can't control what happens in any game, just contribute to an atmosphere, at home, which makes winning more possible. Not forgetting our travelling fans who put on a great show every time. Keep shouting, singing and cheering. Hopefully we'll keep winning. The rest of them? let them worry about what we're doing. I want us to be Champions, hopefully, but second wll suit me down to the ground. COYR!

I want it for Markus, I want for my mum and I want it for every Saints fan who's not here today to enjoy it... I do understand that sentiment. However, given the below two scenarios, I would prefer a 'safe' second place slot to a 'risky' first place slot: Scenario 1 Before the last day of the season, Saints lie in top spot but it's tight and they are only 2 points above the play-off berths, so need a win on the last day of the season to secure automatic promotion and the title. Scenario 2 Before the last day of the season, Saints lie in 2nd place. They are 4 points off top spot so can't win the title but they are also 4 points ahead of 3rd place so are guaranteed automatic promotion regardless of final game results. It would be 'scenario 2' for me every time. Ok, I appreciate these 2 scenarios are fairly contrived and/or selective to highlight my point, but I would be surprised if many Saints fans preferred 'Scenario 1' coming into the last game of the season....? West End Saint Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 Blimey as long as we dont get carried away eh ! we have a tough game today Notts County are on a very good run we can't do anything about other results there are plenty of twists & turns it is all very tight in the top 6. I am just delighted we are right in the mix after the Brentford result being 2nd looked a long way off we are playing some fantastic football at the moment & I am loving it but I can see all the clubs at the top having a blip dont forget if win win today we equal a record of wins everything crossed we continue our momentum. um pahars Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 Would prefer Brighton to draw, but would not be upset if they won. Going up is my first priority and Posh are in the hunt. I'm looking downwards, not upwards until we have a decent gap between us and third spot.

Spot on Darren, feck 2nd place, fed up with second best being good enough, and how would we ever square being runners up to Brighton anyway? To achieve this the best result for us today would be for Brighton & Peterboro to draw, we might still be 2nd but that way both contenders/rivals drop points to us assuming of course we do the biz. Although we did win the Div.3 south title in 1959-60, we have never managed top spot even when promoted later on ; we went up to Div.1 (old Prem.) as 2nd in 1965-66 After relegation (1973-4) we returned to Div.1 in 1977-78 ..in second place whilst in Div.1 our best ever league placing was ...2nd behind Liverpool in 1983-84. I'm not all superstitious ---2nd place would be OK for me this time around, too. but of course (Champions) ..does have a ring to it, but it would be nice to go up and not have the albatross hanging round our neck ..next season. Lord Duckhunter Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 I would rather Brighton beat Peterboro. Doesn't really matter if we finish second and ten points behind Brighton, it means nothing in the Championship.
