Zimmer frames were obstructing the pavement?

QPR home game and their lot were being walked up from the railway station.

Was it just me that cringed alot at that thread?

Alot of "We knew how to do it back then. Nippers these know f**k all about violence" sort of bravado.

Yeh yeh yeh, pick out the bits you want to spin. What about the chat about fashions, youth clubs, discos etc of the time?

Definitely not worth revisiting due to the fact that the thread would be hijacked by twohats.

Go on, infract me, I'm up to here with this effin' joint.

To be fair, he didn't say that was all it was.

And infract you for what exactly? If you want to recreate that thread then go ahead. If anyone isn't interested in it they will just stay away - as per the rules.

Thats it old codgers lets go for it. For starters The Soul Cellar was called The Painted Wagon back then and Nick Antony was the DJ there.

Ah, but they won't stay away will they? They'll swarm onto the thread saying "oooh look at those nasty men glorifying violence, i shouldn't have to read stuff like that" That's the problem with this board, some are more interested in choosing which jester hat or facepaint to wear to Plymouth than a very interesting and insightful trip down Southampton's and Saint's memory lane.

NB: Any jester hat wearers or face painters feel the the need to reply to this post, go ahead but i won't be answering, only got 3 posts and i'm not going to waste them on you little herberts. Many Thanks

So don't start the thread then.

Don't moan about the thread not existing and then argue why it shouldn't.

It went on for pages and pages but you must have read it.

I found it a fascinating insight into my early years of supporting the club. Others may prefer the 'songs for Brentford' thread or 'what colour should the away shirts be next season' but not me thank you.

I did read it but would like to show it to someone who is doing some research into the Saints in the 70's.

Who was at The Painted Wagon on a famous Saturday evening ? The place was rammed. If my memory serves me correct most of us were preparing for the bus to Bournemouth to visit Upstairs At Erics.Must have been about 8 O'clock when a group of older lads walked in most were wearing blazers and sta-prest/chinos.Within seconds they were chanting "Peeeooortsmuff" to be met with a hail of fists , beer glasses and chairs.Turned out they were the 6.57 Crew on thier way back by train from a West game (Plymouth/Bristol/Cardiff ?) and decided to stop off and pay us a visit. Most entertaining.

It was a fantastic thread.....I loved the story of a thug who ended up with his head buried in a jukebox, I recall sitting there laughing at that. SOme names came up, contemporaries of mine...I had a turned a corner by then and discovered EDOOCASHUN

I do hope some one has the thread.

And, IIRC, when people returned to the bar after the sojourn down to Central one daft skate was still downstairs.

And yes, it was Eric's we were going to

1, I didn't start the thread

2, Can you please enlighten me as to where i have moaned about the thread not existing and then arguing why it shouldn't?

Please explain your reply, seeing as you're a moderator. Were you in the throes of picking your jester hat for Plymouth, but happened to chance upon my post? ;-)

I saw some old faces at Bournemouth on Saturday. Pete Wilson, old Wimpson boy for one

Many of us old boys including messrs Wilson and Jewitt sit in one block in the Chapel.

As for the Soul Cellar thread they were good memories of how life was then, not neccesarily correct or right, but as it was

Spot on post mate. You are right some people are more interested in threads creating crap songs which no one will sing or guessing who our new sponsor, our new kit, the standard of the pies and PA system. I started going to football in the mid eighties as a kid with my brother and old man and remember seeing all the stuff on the telly or the odd occasion it happening at Saints games when i was there so love to hear first hand stories from people back then. Give me a thread reminsising about Pompey away 84, or other away days with interesting and funny accounts from people that were there over a "New Song for Alex Chamberlain" thread every day of the week.

Life has changed, football in the late 60's, 70's and 80's was about the community of Southampton and its supporters, we all came together, many of us from the large council estates around the city to support our club, yeah we may have kicked lumps out of each other during the week but when Saturday came we were all Saints against the big boys.

There were very few all ticket games, no all seater stadiums. if you went to away games you had to stick together or risk physical injury.

Football was for the people not TV.

Were they better days , probably not but I for one made friends who I still speak to 40 odd years later

Totally agree. Could give a stuff what the new kit will look like or who is on the shirt or what songs to sing.

Nail on head. Me mid to late 70's onwards. Sky and the Corporates have sanitised things somewhat.

Manji is nearer the mark - not quite but close enough.

It seems so long ago, I must of been all of 18 and totally unsure what the **** was going on as I was sat in the bar upstairs and had been sniffing poppers

Again, I maybe confusing things in my old age, but did not those events lead to the slashing on a someones face (nearly mine as it happens) a few weeks later at the back of M&S by the bus stops? Or is my timeline completely wrong?

As you say Mike, the fighting was wrong but we needed to group up or be picked out. Safety in numbers was the order of the day. There's quite a few of the 'Old Boys' in the Chapel, some even with their sons ;) but this time round setting a proper example. As to enduring friendships it was much more than that. If you were away and a group of you saw a lone Saint in the mire then you dug in and helped him out. That forged friendships.

Even the antagonism between Southampton and Eastleigh was forgotten on a match day. That has all passed now, thank God for that!

We have not forgotten our own either. On April 16th there is a Soul Motown night at the Dockies Club for one of the lads who is unable to work through an accident from about 25 years ago. We are raising funds to try and help him make his home far more comfortable. He still gets to the games, sits in the Chapel on his wheelchair.

I'll try and have a chat with you if I see you on Saturday.

Not sure about the M&S bit - its been a while - can just about recollect something about that but as to timing I haven't got a scooby.

It was after the England u21 game K. FF got done by 30+ of em.

Metal bar to the face and hands. Teeth knocked out and hand and nose broken.

The game they came to the Wagon was after Cardiff.. They wore blazers as they said to Cardoff ob they were going to a wedding so they could get into Cardiff without hassle.

I loved the thread. There was a fella mentioned called Dougall who wore a sheepskin coat and never moved - he had been seen walking his dog in Fairoak I think.

Then there was another guy whose name escapes me (Martin was it); waiting at the top of the stairs by some swinging doors with a chair while a mob of Chelsea fans were poised to charge upstairs. He had a motorbike accident I think.

Thats not to glorify the trouble but they were just classic seventies folklore tales.
