Football Manager 2013

So MLG, please update us with new info, release date as well as any bargains!

I know the release date has been delayed due to one member of staffs family member being ill...

The announcement has been delayed, they haven't set a release date.

As Ludwig says, the release date hasn't been set so it can't be changed. The delay is in the announcement of the game and an early look at it. Was going to be in late August, now in mid September. So not long now.

probably just an update to the database and some minor changes as usual. Yet still suckered into buying it.

There have been hints at something a bit more revolutionary happening, something about being less conservative with the design this time.

Probably why it's crucial that Miles Jacobson (SI MD) is involved with the unveiling and have been given time to resolve his personal circumstances.

The best-selling, most realistic football management series ever made is back and will be released before Xmas. Football Manager 2013 introduces more than 900 new features & new ways to play. Check http://www.footballmanager.com from Monday for more indepth feature videos each week.

Game Information

Football Manager is the best-selling, most realistic football management series ever made. Football Manager 2013 celebrates 20 years of games from the people at Sports Interactive by introducing an array of new features.

This year’s version allows you to take control of any club in more than 50 nations across the world and includes all of Europe’s biggest leagues as well as database of over 500,000 real-world players and staff.

As well as some landmark new features in the Career Mode, there are now new ways to enjoy your Football Manager experience.

NEW TO CAREER MODE…

Match Engine

The 3D match engine has seen huge improvements this year. Everything on the pitch looks more realistic; from the stadiums, the players’ movement, intelligence, and the way the ball moves through the air.

We’ve also introduced hundreds of new animations to make the game feel more realistic and we’ve made the whole experience more televisual by introducing new camera angles and showing the kick-off and final whistle.

Manager Roles

Another notable difference is the significant restructure of the manager’s staff and a revamp of their roles. The most obvious is that we’ve introduced the position of Director of Football into the game for the first time, which will allow managers to pass on some of their workload, such as contract negotiations, if they choose to.

In addition to this, we’ve also increased the number of specialist coaching roles within the game and given the manager greater flexibility to choose which coaches offer advice and when. The manager can also choose to complain about boardroom interference – although that particular option should probably be used sparingly.

And much more…

A brand new training system, improved international management, tones in press conferences & a new user interface.

NEW WAYS TO PLAY…

Classic and Challenge Modes

Football Manager Classic is a less time-consuming way to enjoy Football Manager. The essence of the game is exactly the same – the manager still takes charge of a squad of players and competes at whatever level he or she chooses – but they will now find that a number of their responsibilities have either been taken over by their support staff or have disappeared completely.

For example, while the player still takes charge of training in FMC, this is carried out at a 'full team' level only – there's no individual player training. And when it gets to matches themselves, there are no team talks or opposition reports... you just go straight to a game using the same 3D match engine as Career Mode. The games are played out in a quicker 'highlights only' fashion, but you can even speed this up by going straight to ‘Instant Result’.

Players who opt for Football Manager Classic will also find that they have a couple of further options in terms of how they play the game; they can either play a full open-ended ‘Career’ or they can choose to play in the new ‘Challenge’ mode.

In Challenge mode they’ll find themselves in a particular situation which will test their management skills over a shorter game time – usually half a season. Can you win a trophy with a team consisting almost entirely of kids? Or could you guide your club to safety despite being bottom of the table at Xmas?

We first introduced Challenge Mode in Football Manager Handheld 2012 and it proved to be so popular that we’ve decided to include it in FMC too.

The game will come with four free-to-play challenges, each of which feeds in to a global leaderboard.

Network Play

The brand new Network Play is fully integrated with Steam’s network functionality which means that players should be able to set up and enjoy games against their friends far more easily than before. The Network Mode also allows people to set-up special one-off leagues and cups and to import their team from their career mode, so you can now end any debate about whose FM team is better.

The deeper integration with Steam will also allow us to manage worldwide leaderboards, so, for the first time you’ll really know how good a manager you are.

Plus over 900 other new features!

f6ck mucrotransactions

From a SI staff member...

No-one 'has' to use any micro-transactions, they won't have any influence whatsoever on the game is someone chooses not to use them. They only appear in FMC (FM is untouched) and a number of these 'unlockables' can be unlocked by just playing through - again only on the users request. If it's something you don't want to use, then it won't affect your game in the slightest :)

Not overly impressed. Very tacky additions, the challenge mode and unlockables. I thought the idea was for the game to be realistic, but you can buy the option to not be sacked? I realise they're in a different mode or whatever but I'd prefer them to improve the game rather than create different takes on it.

Football Manager Classic is streamlined mode for the casual gamer, something a lot of people have asked for years when they say the main game is too complicated. The main Football Manager game has a huge number of improvements.

Yes I know, I did watch the video.

Whilst I agree that it takes too long to get through a season, I'm not sure making an 'FM Lite' version is the way forward. It's just one extreme or the other, basically. Of course there will be a 'huge number of improvements', not many people are going to pay up to £40 for the same thing that came out last year with updated squads.

Personally, even if it does take too long to get through a season, I'll probably ignore the 'Classic' thing altogether.

I'm also not totally sure about the whole control over the Director of Football thing - I can't recall too many times when a DoF has been hired or fired by a manager. That has always been, as far as I can make out, an appointment by the supremo - the Chairman or owner. There are a few successful ones, Dan Ashworth at West Brom and Nick Hammond at Reading, but there's always a Damien Comolli or two out there. Have any of those ever been sacked by the manager? If anything the DoF can sack the manager.

F6ck steam and f6ck mucrotransactions

I take it you wont be able to get an editor ?

I think steam is a necessity these days, and I'm yet to hear a good agreement against it....

there was a stat floating around a cpl years ago that only one in five who played fm09 actually bought it, and I felt guilty enough to buy the last two. and they've had a free editor on steam for a while.

A lot of the time it doesn't work, it assumes users have stable and fast internet connections, people are still managing to get pirated copies of the game to work.

Basically it's a flawed system and a flawed concept.

i have used steam for two years now and never has it just stopped working, or just won't work. and for most if that time my internet has been around 1mbps, it's now up to a whopping 2mbps, and it still occasionally goes down. I also share my account with my other half, and I have no problem setting her computer to offline mode once games are installed on her machine.

I havnt looked at pirated games recently but I know they were still cracking them, but much later and more unstable than anything steam provide. id rather have steam than a steam emulator in my machine, and if we have to have DRM in the game id rather it was steam than origin, or that horrible DRM launcher they had with fm08/09.

I still struggle to believe that ppl actually have a problem with steam, and not just with paying for games.

You have no problems with it, so assume no-one else does? Not really a way to judge trends is it.

I've had steam crash repeatedly, not let me into the game, have update problems, have steam itself not open and lots of saved games met with steam errors. I know lots of other people hate it too, and like me they're people who've bought the game for many years so it has nothing to do with paying.

Quite.

I'd argue it's more miraculous that someone has not encountered a problem with Steam in two years. Your luck may well run out with 2013, JPTCount. The FM12 updates thread is full of Steam error posts.

Nice one with the videos! Trying to keep up with them for some others who love FM!

So pleased multiplayer finally uses steam! Steam generally works so well it would be silly not to get fully into what it can offer.

Still have plenty of old discs but nothing before FM10 seems to work on mac.

Everything pre FM10 is power pc on Mac going through the emulation layer (might actually be FM11 they abandoned ppc) but they stripped that out of osx in Snow Leopard because ppc stuff takes up a lot of space and is hardly used (though it was installable as a download, Lion and beyond has a definatly no more ppc policy). It is possible to emulate it again, but a pain without just rolling back to Leopard/SL.

I accept many have no problems with it too. They're lucky, but there are clearly issues with it for many. Likewise I'm rubbish at FM, but I don't assume this is the game's fault and everyone else is struggling with it, it's just my experience.

well just from my personal use I have installed it on 3 computers, on 5 separate builds, and god knows how many hours, but aside from my self, both my brother's use it, my father in law, and countless friends, so my assumptions come from 3rd hand experience too. I have even brought up this line of questioning because like I said, I struggle to understand the flak it gets, unless it's because they have been forced into paying for something they are used to getting for free.

but DRM is a necessity, and I feel it does the job better than everything else I have ever used for games, maybe I've been lucky, maybe uve just been unlucky, who knows...
