F1 just became NASCAR

Drivers will select a number and keep it for the duration of their career. Previous season WC will have option of carrying the number 1 plate for the next season. Granted this works well for bike racing (and NASCAR) particularly from a merchandising perspective, but I wonder if it will for F1. Numbers aren't highly visible at present, unlike NASCAR or the bikes...

Double points will be awarded for the last race of the season. So that means 4th place in Abu Dhabi will be worth more than a win at Monaco, Spa, Silverstone, etc.

Looks like Abu Dhabi will have the final race for the foreseeable future because its popular with teams and sponsors so its likely to find teams optimising their cars for that circuit.

I'm sure that the decision with regard to Abu Dhabi is nothing to do with the "sponsors" wanting to ensure that they receive the maximum global TV coverage, and everything to do with making F1 more competitive.

Hell if they wanted to do that why mess with the formula? Just ban Red Bull & Vettel for a year or so

Stupid, pathetic and ridiculous gimmicks that put the nails into the coffin of a once noble and dignified spectacle.

Tabloid rules for an ignorant audience.

Yep, can't disagree. Thanks very much for the memories F1 but it's time we moved on I'm afraid.

The double points thing is just the worst kind of stupidity imaginable. Imagine a driver just edging out his rivals (not blowing them away as Vettel has done for the last couple of years) over an entire season and going into the last race with a modest but healthy lead and then losing out because of the double points.

Bernie you are a tool for agreeing to this.

I think that if they want to increase the competitiveness of the sport and mess around with the points, they should do this:

keep the current points values the same, all season long, but make it so that you get bonus points for winning a race if you DONT start from Pole. Example: if you win from 2nd, you get 2 extra points, win from 3rd - 3 extra and so on and so forth.

Then this season Red Bull would have sandbagged in qualifying a little (start 5th, 6th) and just blitzed everyone further.

Just keep it simple!

I've always thought it would be more exciting if they made track figure of 8 like in scalextrix. You could get some real good smash going on the crossroad. Also perhaps if they made half the cars go in opposite direction? Not sure quite how this would work with regards to who is the winner, but it would be v.exciting. Also I would have jumps.

There was an old F1 game from years ago where I always used to go the wrong way around the track. Made for much excitement when my car was launched into the air on contact at, what 300 miles an hour between 2 cars.

F1 used to be a good watch, and both the wife and I used to happily watch it despite not being avid fans, but this past season we didn't bother after the first couple of races. Stock Car/Banger racing with a bit of contact is probably more down my street. Anything where there's a 25% chance the driver will be dead/horifically burned/deformed by the end of the race gets my vote. (For the sensitive types, that was a joke.)

I just wish they would go back to the good looking, pre 2009 cars but with DRS and unlimited KERS.

I quite like the idea of drivers having their own number, if it makes them more recognisable. Stuff like Giles Villeneuve as 27 and Nigel Mansell having red 5 stick in my mind. It's not like we're really losing anything by changing them as the numbers are pretty meaningless anyway. You can't even see them.
