Positive things to say about our club

Today myself, Steve Grant and a guy called Pete did an interview for Setanta. We did it at the old dell site, talking about Saints then and now in build up to the Man Utd game on Sunday.

Was quite a laugh, but when the interviewer said try and say thing positive, what ever we said turned into doom and gloom. I started talking about the the young players like drew, adam etc but in the next breath was talking about them most probably going in the January transfer.

So apart from the fan base, stadium, what is there to be positive about as since this morning I have been trying to think of something :)

Good stadium. Good academy. Loads of half decent players coming through (more than we can use realistically so we can cash in on one or two). We have a plan for rebuilding (you may not agree with it but there is a clear strategy) and we are sticking to it. For the first time in ages, players are doing what they are told on the pitch. We are still probably in a better financial position than Pompey and have a much brighter future...

Huge fan base, great Premiership infrastructure, superb City, biggest Club on the South coast if we're being honest.

Sits in the gateway to the UK.

Lots of potential, lots of youth to build upon.

There we go.... positively saleable. Come and buy us.

You should sell those happy pills in the club shop. :yawinkle:

Totally agree, so why on earth are people like Lowe and Portaloo allowed within 100 miles of the place to wreck the club and its prospects

Well indeed, this is it. Why doesn't somebody buy Southampton Football Club...?

Whilst I admire your positive outlook and words, you lost it for me on "superb city". Well, I'm glad you like it but have you lived here long? I've lived in Southampton my entire life and it's gone to the dogs. Like our forlorn club, It's a city waiting for something good to happen, it has so much potential, it promises, but never delivers. I'm tired of waiting and being let down, both by club and council & city planners.

On the positive, I'm glad SLH shares are falling. Whilst I feel sorry for Leon and the genuine share holders, the others (Wilde, Lowe, Askham, Richards, Wiseman, etc.) - I hope they lose the f*ckin lot!

This is exactly what I have been saying for a long time now not only has the football club gone into demise but the whole city is a shambles. I used to be proud of my city but now I am embarrassed by it. There was apparently a programme on radio 5 the other day and they were asking celebraties to name the worst city they have been to, one of them named Southampton said it had nothing to offer, in fact he went on to say that on the second night of his gig in Southampton he returned to North London as he couldnt bare to stay another night in Southampton.

The premiership will be a better place without the likes of the inbred island dwellers of fraggle rock.

I seriously wouldn't start laughing too hard. Yes we are in the ****, but so are you, and the sooner some of you understand that the better.

Not having a go or taking the proverbial but wasn't it JFK who said "if you want to change the world, change yourself."

Stand for election to the local council and CHANGE the city for the better.

What can WE do? That's the only attitude which changes anything.

Why dont we tell the world that we'd like someone to when being interviewed?

Yes, must have a word with Mr Grant and Co. Why didn't he and his fellow Saints Webbers fall to their knees at the first syllable of a question from the interviewer, put their hands together and plead for someone to buy out SFC.

Would've made good telly, if nothing else. :)

Very true and I formely worked beside a local councillor but I don't intend a career change. I respect your point, no point moaning if you don't make effort for change but I feel, through my life and dual professions, I've contributed to Southampton significantly. However, in the unlikely event of me retraining and if I was (un)lucky enough to become a prominent councillor, with SCC I'd probably be p*ssing in the wind!

I know what you mean. Disappointing with all the money from property investment that things have not changed quicker.

I will say that as a non local I have seen improvements over the years. But seeing as I don't live there couldn't judge how these things have been done, whether they are the right things, etc!

All I do know is this country/club needs people to grab it by the scruff of the neck right now and my NYR is to be a neck scruff grabber from now on!!!!!! :)

A lot of decent big name players past and present have passed through our ranks.

Shame we couldnt have kept hold of some of them.

Oh we have nice red and white stripey shirts.

We have a Chairman who is very popular because i went on a site a while ago and saw a picture of him on a spring and thousands of people had taken the time to punch him.

For a number of years I have wondered if I would like to move back home. I have often thought that I would if it was the same as it used to be. As when I was a kid I loved it there and wouldnt want to be anywhere else. But allot has changed and maybe its just because i have grown up, but when i visit now with my wife and kids there is very little that i feel i can point out that is an attraction any more. the odd focal point broken up by sh1te hole after sh1te hole and not allot that i would like to put my family anywhere near.

As much as i love my home town and im saints through and through i love it for what it was and not what its become.

Positives from someone who used to live in London:

City - housing not so expensive, great for kids, plenty for them to do and places to play outside, good childcare, good public transport, council has some green credentials, relatively good state schools, close to wide open spaces, good cultural amenities, libraries and sports facilities.

Club - relatively affordable to take your kids to the footie while still supporting a local team, players still accessible, excellent community links so kids of all sizes, colours and creeds can get involved in football

You have to see things in the context of the rest of the country - Southampton may not be what it was, but it's a damn sight better than south London.

Oh, yes, and as far as it having nothing to offer celebrities, maybe that's why Dyer had to go to P*** to do his thieving... :D

so there you go. It wasnt just us 3 sat there in front of a camera freezing our nads off. No one can really up with anything positive about the club :(

had i had the chance to be on sultana talking positive about our club i wouldnt have been able to resist being as sarky as possible and commenting on how well this dependancy on youth and total football is going. points dont seem to matter which is why we are all loving it. I would have mentioned how we dont think pearson deserves to be a league 1 manager so as a club we are doing our upmost to trade places with his club so he can have a proper crack at CCC football. See how nice we are?

Also taking into account how sorry we feel that poopy are heading in our direction we are also taking our step down to keep the status quo in local rivalry as we had the upper hand for so long and we dont want to swap back just yet as they havnt had there fair shot at being the higher club in the south.

also our players are able to walk around our city without being recognised and mobbed. well i say city but i mean the local swings and slides but the toddlers that are there dont give them any hastle and treat them just the same as everyone else.

Its great being a saint. :D

That's easy;

SFC has a rich and venerable history, has always been an important part of the community, produced some of the best players in history, and has the most dedicated fans on the south coast, even in the face of adversity, when they have proven that they are ready to fight for their club.

One is never just red-and-white, one is red-and-white till death!

Does this mean I shouldn't go to Southampton University if I get an offer there? :/

And I'd say the fanbase - really looking forward to a loud capacity crowd for Man U - I just pray that people concentrate on the football and boosting the squad with positive chants rather than negative bolloks. It would be amazing getting something out of the game, better than sitting there being negative for 90 minutes surely?

Maybe some player chants (cue jokes about not knowing who the players are etc.)

Interesting to hear other people talk about Southampton, the place where I was born and brought up until I left in my early 20s some 30 years ago.

I still hanker after returning to the place having lived in a number of other places during my time away but as each year goes by I become less sure about it. Yeah, there's the sea, the Forest, the Saints and so on but whenever I go back I just see the place as one big traffic jam. Car City is what I call it with a crap bus company too.

Somehow it feels a little less like home than it used to. Of course I blame Lowe for that (mostly). ;)

I heard that. He was hardly a celebrity - just some small time comedian!

Said he went back to London in the day then back to Soton for a gig in the evening. Frankly, what was he expecting? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Krakatoa erupting, herd of Wildebeest sweeping majestically....?

Anyhoo, probably one of those London idiots who isn't happy unless he's being swamped by barrow boys and ne'erdowells and pretedning there's some sort of nostalgic dignity in living in a retro-Dickensian ****-hole.
