The thing is I could relate to that Clancy woman who got done for the tweet she made. I could imagine that someone who isn't very bright could write something in the heat of the moment and then take it down. I think she was harshly done by and I feel her sentence was disproportionate. I have no such feelings for someone who has gone out in the channel and starts slashing dinghys. You're asking for trouble with that sort of behaviour and the court would need to do something that acts as a deterrent because it's not acceptable to do things like that.

They are all considerations in sentencing but the captain was risking the lives of over 100 people working for criminal gangs illegally smuggling people across borders. The question would be if what this Thompson guy did is comparable or worse. To me the answer is pretty clear

Agreed, but you have to take the other things into account, as well as making an example of him as he posted himself doing it to thousands, and perhaps millions, of people. That makes a huge difference and they will need to make an example of him otherwise every Tom, Dick and Harry will be doing it.

My guess is 6 to 10 years.

In which case, if the charge of "destroying ships" is proven - and I'm going to stick my neck out here and say being filmed taking a knife to a ship and destroying it, seems fairly cut and dried - then the crime carries a tariff of up to life in prison.
