Its tragic they have to make this sort of stuff up, they've done it for years as we know. It's also funny how whenever there is any post about Saints or about them on facebook you can guarantee in the first two or three replies will be one of them making a comment about scummers or on one of their posts about how great they are. It's a deeply ingrained inferiority complex.

Sadly for them this isn't a myth, no made up stories about poor attendances with no evidence to back it up. 2731 and for a first team  league cup game when both teams were in the championship. Im sure there will be some excuse for it like there was in the mid 90s and they were regularly getting 8,000, that was down to the owners lying about the attendances so they didn't have to pay the tax on it was the excuse they came up with for that one 😂

Scummers being "scared", despite Potsdam, The Joiners, Lords, The Rose Bowl and Covent Garden and even the last cup game at Fratton when one scummer scattered all of the "welcoming committee".

The dialect bollocks, yet it's southampton that has a song with mush in it that pre-dates them using it and benches in town with the word on it,, and their own university running a study that concluded there's no such thing as a pompey dialect.

The attendance thing despite them having had lower average home attendances than us for almost a century, despite them not travelling well for decades, despite them having sub 10k attendances on multiple occasions.

The we're more working class myth, despite their most famous fan being an antiquarian bookseller from Petersfield and their city being richer than ours.

The "men went to war from pompey and not from scum" myth that ignores that the biggest place for the d-day landings on the south coast was Southampton.

The idea they're sleeping giants when in the last 100 years they've barely been above us in the league, and barely been in the top division.

That game was one of the most evil atmospheres i've heard at St Mary's, pure unadulterated hatred everywhere round the ground. The minute they whistled and boo'd Bates minutes silence everything went up a notch and pre game the city itself just had an air of menace, and that was from us not them.

Don't forget that night they'd been run down st mary's st from The Joiners and their talisman Eddie had had his wrist snapped, plus they were actually lucky they didn't go further and go into Zeb Bar because it would've ended a lot worse for them if they had.

If we could have an atmosphere even half as evil as that night on sunday their players will wilt, because that was proper Southampton, a whole city out for their blood

Im surprised this wasn't picked up more at the time. One of their main faces lets  a film crew follow him and his band of merry men around all day, talking them through it whilst going on about how Southampton got nuffin, it was beyond ridiculous.  It was Mcintyre as well who had recently done the undercover doc on Chelsea. 

A few other lies he/they told, in the book Derby Days claims that 30 Portsmouth youth batter 100 saints mob at the Bargate in 1996, no one has ever heard of such and incident. 

He also claimed they had it up at Millwall and a skate got smashed round the head with a paving slab and just got up and told the police he didn't want an ambulance and just walked off - that how hard they are. Im probably with you, even some of theirs said they were surprised at the level of hatred and numbers out that day. A few that were in the escort from the station said they had no idea the police had cleared a large group of Saints from top end of town before they got there, would have been carnage if they hadn't. Same after the game with the police keeping the got nothing scummers back who were trying to get at them up the back streets of Britainia Road.

2002 When England played at SMS was also interesting, Skates giving it large in the build up what they were going to come up and do, in reality a pathetic little mob who spent the whole day hiding then asked for an escort to the stadium.

Fratton had average 11k for 10 seasons once, I'll have to dig the attendance book out. Some of thier games in 70s the ground was virtually empty.

I started following Saints as a kid in the late 70s, and then teenage years through 80s.  Lots of firms in that era were genuinely intimidating, and I can recall thinking my number was up against Leeds, Millwall and Chelsea, and full on with a number of others - you needed a turn of speed back then. '84 was my first derby and only one missed was in 2019, the Ings dissection.  Not once, have I seen them get the better of our fans, inside or outside of either ground.  Not fucking once!  The level of bullshit is remarkable and it effects old and young, I think it's biological and linked to inbreeding and resultant low IQ following population concentration linked to slum clearance post WW2.

When this documentary aired, I watched it with a pal of mine who is a Leeds fan of a similar age, and he commented on the stark difference between the SFC and PFC contingent, making the point that the inbreds featured were, just that - 5ft 5ins mockney imbeciles, 9 stone simpering mummy's boys, or senile old soaks. Nothing to fear at all at the weekend, and I think the city is a lot meaner than when they last visited - will be a shock for them.

I was there as well in my STH in Kingsland North and agree that it was a big jump from 96 and 1988 in terms of a hostile atmosphere for them. The Bates heckling really kick-started it - dreadful decision by Lowe in the first place - and was a firecracker after that. Big piece in The Times covered the sheer hostility I heard/saw and the chants coming from all four sides, executive boxes, the lot. Colleague of mine who was a Londoner and a Chelsea boy bought another colleague’s ticket after they had a family illness and he reckoned it was as tasty as any London derby he’d been to, only Hammers v Wall would beat it. Needless to say, disgusted at the Bates incident. 

Some older skates did write to the News and Echo in disgust tbf at it, and apologised, but it wasn’t just a few of them, it was a significant portion of their allocation. Serious noise when Beattie scored and even the Kingsland North was a mosh pit. Bates incident is probably where in my mid-20s and we’d played them so rarely that the extent and depth of the loathing hit home.

What fucks me off the most about that game was the week before they’d been banned from playing certain players unless the could prove or guarantee the players would get paid that month, as we know they lied and the likes of O’hara would play and score, and then dirty cunts would go on about doing us 4-1 at home until 2019. Of course the players wages were delayed that month surprise surprise.

The reality is we had them on the ropes for the majority of that game, and had they been restricted in who they could play we could well of ran out as winners. That celebration when Lambert scored was something else, I think only the Crouch last minute penalty sticks in my mind as much.

2003 was my first derby. As a 15 year old it was quite the experience. Not much gets said about 1996. Obviously we smashed them as normal, but always seems barely a footnote in the history of the fixture.

I remember Fratton away in 04 getting pelted with hailstones in their excuse for an away end. That 1-0 win was the springboard for their survival, if Kevin Philips scissor kick had been an inch to the right it’d have gone in off the post and we’d have got a 1-1 draw, likely sending them down.

Being held back over an hour whilst the idiots smashed up their own city was fun.

Just ran out of steam in the end. Think Fonte being cup tied was probably the decisive issue as it left us with really slow centre backs and we got absolutely murdered on the break once we tired.

Was never in a million years a 4-1 game. So glad we bettered that at Fratton 9 years later.

As others have said that Lambert goal was incredible though. Right up there with the best celebrated goals at SMS. Excluding games against the skates then Camara v Norwich in 2005 is one that springs to mind.

Vile. I remember Iain Baird getting death threats when signed for them from Leeds for their one and only top flight season in the 1980s, having started his career with us. He flopped though, their fans turned on him and IIRC he got injured at QPR I think was, the club got him treatment at a private hospital the club credit card account had reached its limit and payment bounced.

You really have got to be some kind of retard to have just walked past the end of St Mary’s Street less than a year after you were chased out of it with a limp wrist and say on camera that Southampton have “got nothing” while holding hands with a tv crew to make sure you stay safe.

Madness really that we have only played them 11 times in my entire life. I’m heading towards 40 FFS. 

1996 was a bit of a non event on and off the pitch. It was an incredibly one sided game and we ran out easy 3-0 winners with them miles 

off the pitch they had 1500 tickets and sat there in silence for most of the game, not quite the band of fanatical ultras who never stop singing they’d have you believe nor have I ever seen them be such. The mighty 657 I believe got off the train by the station pub other side of Northam bridge a group of them did manage to make it into town but were chased off by Saints without too much resistance.

I used to be quite good mates with a couple of fellas up at Millwall but we’ve lost contact over the years 

another bullshit he came out with was up there, him and his little gang ran into a larger group of Millwall before the game and he was apparently begging them to give them a pass as they were outnumbered, unbelievably the Millwall lot left them alone

after the game when he was in a larger group and safely tucked up in a police escort he was doing the trampoline giving it the “come on then” shouting out how Millwall had shit themselves earlier 

You can imagine how that myth has grown into how a small group of Pompey fought off a massive group of Millwall Rorkes Drift style I really don’t believe how anyone takes him seriously
