Will anyone stay up tomorrow to watch the Jake Paul v Anthony Joshua fight?

Can't say I'm massively in to boxing (I refuse to pay to watch box office stuff in particular), but I hate to admit that I'm intrigued by this fight.

Joshua should, presumably, win comfortably by knock out. If he doesn't it's either one of the biggest shocks in sporting history or (much more likely) embarrassingly scripted.

I don't know much about Jake Paul other than the fact that he looks like a fucking bell end. Hopefully he'll get walloped by the first punch.

Joshua could just push him away. Haven’t seen the numbers for reach but must be one of biggest gap ever.
Cricket might keep me up, not this farce

I’d disagree with that. This is all about people not normally into boxing.

Anyone serious about boxing who stays up to watch this fight is a moron.

Agree

this is the Jake Paul and Netflix show. Joshua will earn a huge wedge, and try not to embarrass himself

Yep. It's an embarrassment to boxing. Ditto the press conferences. AJ should blow him away within a round or two, but I have a feeling he won't.

AJ is probably being paid so much money he will “drag it out” a bit.

listening to the radio today, Netflix acquired 2 million new customers on the back it the Jake Paul v Tyson fight. The average life spend of a Netflix customer is about $900.

Printing money for them.

AJ is ultimately the junior partner in this setup

I agree. It’s a farce. It’s tragic boxing has come to this, used to be a great sport

Let’s remember Jake Paul lost to Tommy Fury who is more famous for being on love island than supposedly being a boxer. It’s all a bit sham. It’s the equivalent of hashtag United suddenly becoming a world class football team and holding their own against Real Madrid and Man City in staged friendlies and everyone saying how amazing they are. Most people would see it for what it is, but sadly all these kids lap it up because it’s a YouTuber

They would also be morons. I will check the highlights the next day the same way someone might watch wwe.

This is what will happen if they actually fight.

More likely Paul runs around the ring for a few rounds then goes down after a body shot or something.

He's two stone lighter and miles smaller. It's actually dangerous.

His last "fight" was against someone who is like a foot shorter and 100lbs lighter than AJ!

Indeed. It's a circus act not legitimate boxing at all. If you're going to stay up and watch a fight then you hsould have gone for beterbiev bivol which was amazing.

Yep. It's a proper mismatch. I've got a friend who's a retired pro. He once told me about a bloke he knew who'd fought AJ. The bloke was taller and heavier than AJ and was unbeaten in 20+ fights. Got blown away in less than 2 minutes. Apparently he said he'd never felt such power, and whether linked or not, he had to retire a couple of years later after he failed a brain scan and had his license cancelled.

Boxing is bloody dangerous, and the issue always has been that you get big heavyweights and smaller ones. Can't really do much about that, but the smaller guy, if he's decent, can win and stay out of trouble. David Haye for example did well against much bigger men. The difference is that he was a good boxer.

AJ must be getting some serious coin for this sham

Isn't he getting USD70m or something nuts?

He'd be insane not to do it, to be honest. He's not going to get hurt. If he sparks him out, great. If he doesn't, people will say he was going easy or it was rigged.

It's basically 70m dollars for some promo work and a light sparring session.

Haye Vs Klitschko was similarly mismatched on paper to be fair, Haye Vs Valuev more so. But yes, embarrassing. Not so much because of the stats as the obvious abilities of them both. If Paul was the proper boxer and Joshua the carthorse, that would be something of a leveller, but when you factor in that the smaller bloke doesn't look good enough to win a regional belt, it becomes utterly ridiculous.

Haye was a proper boxer though, Paul is a loud mouth youtuber who lost to Tommy Fury.

Absolutely. Shit boxer + being the smaller man, it shouldn't end well, but he's a brand and a cash cow. Netflix won't want him to get smashed up. I reckon AJ will just pad him away, aim for the body, take a few hits and it'll go to the cards.

They're using a slightly bigger ring for some reason as well.

I won't bother to watch it live but I'll probably watch it later on Sunday.  Generally I'm quite happy with Netflix getting involved in boxing and was pleased when they did the Crawford v Canello fight but this is a bit meh.

Netflix will take over the world. If they get Warners, which will give them HBO, then likes of Sky going to be massively depleted of content

Big thing is whether they start doing PPV (which I guess they probably will do).  Must admit I haven't really watched Sky Boxing since matchroom left them but there isn't much domestic stuff to tempt me to watch them for boxing anyway.

Yeah, I expect the next few years will be filled with mergers of streaming services and media companies in general.

Yeah lots of smaller players going to be hit. CH4, CH5 BBC and ITV should all merge to one platform IMO, although not sure that many would pay for it

Eddie Hearn was on the radio yesterday, acknowledging that for this event AJ was the junior partner (as this is not a proper bout). He stated the reason for doing this was for the money (and some rounds).

I have had Netflix for years and it is generally good. Now they are dipping their toe into sport, coupled with acquiring parts of Warner, this could be a game changer.

I conducted some research on Reed Hastings a few years back.. he was pretty unique at the time with his management of staff, and that was a big part of their dominance, which is remarkable considering they had no content of their own like Disney / Paramount etc.

As for Netflix. I am amazed the Premier League and/or the EFL do not cut out the middle man and do their own Netflix of football kind of thing

If AJ had come in at that weight then it invalidates the fight. He’s contracted that he can weigh no heavier than 245, he weighed in a couple of pounds under.

I just can’t see a way that these two get into the ring without it being a complete and obvious parody. Even a nearly 60 year old Mike Tyson was accused of pulling punches and holding back. With Joshua it will be immediately obvious.

I thought weight thing could come into it, AJ would weigh 250 and they’d say “ah shucks, too heavy, maybe next time”. Now that he’s weighed in under weight I have no idea what the pantomime will be.

Find out tomorrow morning I guess.

I'm guessing it'll be a Mayweather/McGregor type of "fight". Tyson's size and style didn't lend itself to a pantomime as he doesn't box at distance. AJ has the reach and can just jab on the back foot and step away. That way he'll avoid having to choose to either back away or finish him.

Hopefully I'm wrong and AJ knocks Paul into next Christmas.
