I have just been clearing out the attic, so expect some more old (as I’m old) memorabilia popping up on here, as I have the programs box to go through by the end of the week. But it was CD’s box today and I can across this one from The Valley Slags, The Legend of the Saint. I believe this was released by a local bank to promote or protest that Le God was not getting in the England squad. I seem to remember a very muted play of this on the pitch at home to Leeds at The Dell in an evening game (that might not be right, might have been a Saturday). I just remember being slightly embarrassed for them and the club.

Does anyone know any of the band members, and what other stuff they played. I do know that the campaign ended badly as Matty did not go to France 98! So this would have been around March-May 97/98 season.

Hymn sheet attached so please sing along!

I remember that evening at the Dell very well.  The band were absoluely terrible and they did their best to incite a riot with the Leeds fans if I recall correctly.

I can't recall if their set got pulled or they finished but I do know the Leeds fans were out for blood!

Big time - the Leeds away element still had some of the ‘you’re going to get your fucking heads kicked in’ element from their late 1960s and 1970s heyday. It was a mess. My recollection is that the band were encouraged to finish up. I did go to their Maple Leaf gig which was better but not by a huge amount.

We were sat right next to the Leeds fans for that game and expected to be joined by quite a few of their fans at half time.🙄

Rich Chorley threw his shoe at Rupert Lowe at a SFC AGM, as I recollect.

Last I heard of him was that he was living up in Manchester.

Rumour had it that he was a Man U fan…

Great times in the 90’s, under the East, New York, New York, pills, McFuckskys, London away days, fanzines, music, no tourists and sensible aggro. Not the same anymore.

Oddly enough Ive been chatting to Rich quite a bit lately as he is organising a Shirley School reunion, were all getting on a bit now. Always has been a character. Roll on July when we have the meet. I did mention the Leeds game but cant recll what set it off, he said it wasnt pre planned to go over to them.

He had many a run in with Rupert.

It does make fascinating reading TBF. Also some classic quotes in here that never cease to amuse me:

Quote

Rupert Lowe: First I have two apologies to make. The first is that I’m losing my voice.

Cheers from the crowd.

Quote

Rupert Lowe: I’ve come back to resolve the financial difficulties and that’s what I’m intent on doing… I have received a letter that is sadly anonymous this morning. It says keep the faith in your head coach and his staff, keep the faith in your team and in your youth policy and yourself…

Leon Crouch: Rubbish. It’s your handwriting!
