whatever happens off of the field we are both in the sh1t on it and we should learn from each others mistakes, pompey havnt done that yet and they will probably go the same way as us...................i dont wish relegation on anybody not even pompey as it has destroyed us but it would be nice to play them again, thats if we can stay in the championship.

What a smashing idea that was.If the kids can be brought up to understand it is all a nonsense it can only be good.I myself take the mickey out of Pompey but I dont have a deeep hatred of them as we are all from Hampshire.

I didnt see the footnote that after the victory the Pompey fans smashed their town up

What a bunch of ponces. Football aint the same without hating a huge amount of people over something so pathetic!

For us overseas supporters it gets quite boring when Pompey stuff takes all the attention. I have no relation to that city or that team whatsoever - I'm here for the Saints :)

So we got stuffed 8-1, I'm sure that we'll all tune in to Meridian to witness the event ??

You'd have thought that the bast@rds would have let us off with a narrow defeat (like we get every week in the CCC) but no, they turn the screw!!!

Friendly, my @rse, grrhhh !

:)

Nick - don't usually disagree but back in the 80's one Docker Hughes of the 6:57 party actually campaigned to have Portsmouth removed from Hampshire (pity he wasn't elected IMHO). Also we all live on the same planet - as far as I know that's not stopped people hating each other.;)

I'm from Southampton and I was never brought up to hate Portsmouth. I still remember stories of how Southampton folk used to travel down to watch Pompey when they won the league just after the war - it was always of a story of friendly neighbours, pride in a Southern club winning the league, etc..... When did it all change ???

But why does it have to be though? I started following the Saints in the lat 80s and by this time the hatred between the two clubs was probably at its worst. I was only 13 at the time so I too was swallowed up by the whole "I'm from Southampton ergo I must hate Portsmouth" attitude. I've joined in a few anti-pompey songs over the years I will admit, but over recent years I have come to realise just how stupid, immature and pathetic this rivalry is.

I'll concede that I don't particularly like the city of Portsmouth and I certainly wouldn't choose to live there (though I was never that keen on Southampton on the whole if truth be told, that's why I moved away!) Why should I hate anybody just because of where they were born and which football team they support? I respect anybody who supports their local team, so why should pompey fans be excluded from this? There's just no reason for it.

I took a lot of stick from some very blinkered people on this forum in the run up to last year's FA cup final when I openly declared that I would rather see a team from my home county win the cup than one from a different country entirely. I think it was StuRomseySaint who described my attitude as 'sickening'. I think a lot of folk need to get a little persepctive.

I hope they collapse as a club and tumble to league 2.

Get over the whole "looking for a reason" to hate them and embrace the rivalry. Like I said, I hate (well, dislike) the city, the people, and their club and I have no "proper" reason to do so. This is why football rivalries are special :)

If its football rivalry, then why do you "hate the city (and) the people"?

Thats just ****ing daft Scott!

Your attitude is sickening. You came on here last year after the cup final saying you were glad they won, then you started crying when people gave you a load of abuse. What did you expect? Like it or not you are in the minority, 95% of Saints fans do hate Portsmouth. It's part of football, every club in the country has someone they hate. It's what makes the atmosphere so special.

We don't like them and they really hate us seems to be the best way to summarise the relationship in general - rather like the Scots hold a much bigger grudge against the English than vice versa . I take that as a back-handed compliment as this jealousy exposes a recognition of Southampton's - both club & city - greater level of success in the post war period (SFC's current difficulties not withstanding :() .

I can't see it changing much in the foreseeable future which is a shame as although there's nothing wrong with sporting rivalry some people (from both sides) take it wayyyyyy too far .

If you did say that you deserve everything you got! And stop trying to apply some rationale to it - this is football. We are Southampton supporters, most of us hate anything to do with the great unwashed, their city and particularly their football club and that shxtty blue shirt and its pathetic emblem. That's the way it is and should be. As Scotty said, no logic need be apllied although if you grew up where you were outnumbered by the cxnts or had ever been to Fratton you would find a lot of very good reasons.

I can only conclude that your family did not bring you up properly as a Saints fan. Hating Pxmpey is integral to supporting SFC imo. You have also missed out on the biggest joy in football - watching us play and stuff our local rivals (on numerous occasions) is the biggest adrenalin buzz EVER.

All IMO of course. You should also be tried as a traitor IMO.

Well you are at least correct in that assumption as neither of my parents have ever had the slightest interest in football.

Wrong I'm afraid. I was there in december 03 when we knocked them out of the carling cup, and again when Doddy scored from a corner and Marian scored 'that' goal. You're right, it was a sweet moment to beat our local rivals, but I don't need to hate them with a passion in order to feel that way.

And one thing I have never understood... If we are supposed to hate pompey because they are our local rivals, why do so many Saints fans go and watch Eastliegh when they are at home? Why don't we have a bitter rivalry with them too?

I hate Eastleigh as much as Pompey, trust me.

I am proud to say the last time I stepped foot in Portsmouth was when i was 12, Southampton Rep team beat Pompey Rep team 2-0, and how sweet that was, even at that age. Infact, it was those kind of games that really engraved my dislike for them. I will not go anywhere near the city for anything these days, would rather spend my money around here, and when my mates fancy a night out in Portsmouth, I stay at home. I won't even do my Masters at their University, not just for the fact they are a crap ex poly.

Irrational, yes, stupid, yes, immature of course, but it's just the way it is.

I met some skate through a friend the other week on a night out. The **** offered to shake my hand but I refused and told him where to go. Proud to say none of my friends are Pompey fans. Like 'Le God - The Legend' I haven't ventured into Skatesville for years, and will avoid it for as long as possible apart from when we play there again.

Having lived O/seas for a few years now . It is very sad to see Pompey ahead of us in more ways than one.

The current Qantas in flight magazine has a big visitors spread on Portsmouth over a few pages. Gunn Wharf, etc, etc.

I cant see Southampton even filling one page these days !!

As something of an 'outsider' these days, it seems to me that their council has done a much better job of promoting commerce and tourism in their City - attracting businesses, investing in Gun Wharf, Spinnaker Tower etc. (whatever you think of it!) and taking major events like the Whitbread Round the World Race etc. What a terrible shame, as Southampton as a City has so much to offer, just seems to be little vision among the City Fathers (unless you cound more shopping centres...).

Part of the higher profile of course comes from being a "Premier League" City - note they even replaced us on the BBC Weather map as soon as we went down (previously Southampton was, and should be, the major City on the South Coast and was always the main City represented). This still irks me every time I see it!!

Hopefully one day we'll be back, but it won't be too soon I fear...

Sorry Bexy, if I knew how I would have put a winky eye thing at the end of my post. I wasn't really calling your Saints supporting credentials into question.

I'm sure my illogical loathing of all things P'mouth related is as alien to you as your slight indifference to them is to me.

It HAS always been "that way" though in my time of supporting SFC (nearly 40 years). I wonder sometimes if it is partly to do with being brought up in the "border" towns that make some us more anti as any Friday/Saturday night in town was likely to end in a row with them somewhere. Then again that doesn't really add up as most will have been brought up in Soton postcodes and feel that the rivalry between the 2 cities is the thing.

As said, it's not rational it's football :-)

Ps Regards Eastleigh, I've always thought of that as Saints territory but it seems to be split?!
