The best 'Never scored for Saints' XI

What's the best XI we could have put out from players that never scored for us? Obviously you could take your pick from any 'keeper but beyond that it's tricky.

Not going to be any legends in this lot. So far I can think of:

GK: ...

RB: Ostlund

CB: F. Hall

CB: A. Davies

RM: Hammill

DM: Safri

AM: Gillett

Surely there are some better players. :D

I think that Hall scored two goals against Bolton in the cup. Didn't Gillet score against Blackburn and newcastle?

One Size? He was only here a year and I don't remember him scoring in it. I could be wrong though.

And you are thinking of Griffit, not Gillett.

Edit: Sorry, just realised you must be thinking of Richard. My bad, changed the OP.

How about Peter Shilton in goal - didn't he score against us?

He got one in LC I think.

There are tons just from recent years.

Kamil Kosowski, Jim Brennan, Marcelo Sarmiento, Marcelo Tejera, Ian Pearce, Chris Lucketti, Olivier Bernard, Calum Davenport, Andreas Jakobssen, Mikael Nilsson, Alaeddine Yahia, Matt Mills, Martin Cranie.

Both scored. Jackobsson got a couple. Away to Boro and one against either WBA or Palace at home.

Didn't Terry Curran score in the Semi-Final of the league cup in 79?

Uwe Rosler and Mark Hughes were two that immediately sprang to my mind...

Uwe scored in both last 'competitive' match at The Dell, though it was a friendly*, and the first at SMS, a friendly v Lazio (?) where we lost 3-2. I'm not sure he ever scored in a 'proper' competitive match.

Hughes scored that 'goal' which didn't count when it rebounded out off the advertising boards at Leeds. I don't remember him ever scoring (he did hit the bar with an overhead kick from outside the area once) and soon got moved to def mid where he got booked every game - tho he may have got one or two I've forgotten about.

*As opposed to Dodd's testimonial where Robbie Jackson from Eastenders scored the last goal at the Dell

Hughes got just the one goal, at the Dell.

Franny so nearly made it to the list.

That was my first thought too.... Now I gotta find out when he scored for us. :smt017

As Per Wiki - "His only FA Premier League goal came on 13 December 1997 with a header from a Matthew Le Tissier free-kick against Leicester City at The Dell."

Yes he did! It was a long time ago but I remember it was when he was at Leicester. It was a wet and windy afternoon at the Dell and we lost 5-1 I think. It was a drop kick from his own penalty area that bounced over our keepers head (McClaren or Forsyth - I can't remember) and into the net. Also not sure but I think it might have been their 5th goal and just about capped a miserable day.

Are you sure it was a header. I thought it was a ;centre' from the right touchline, by Benali, that dropped over Casey Keller. Alas memory fades. !

I wasn't even there and I know that it was a header V Leicester, surely it's one of the things that every Saints fan should know?

Uwe Rosler scored away at Mansfield in a League Cup game, his only competitive goal for us, as well as:

Last goal at Dell v Brighton

Two goals in first game at SMS vs Espanyol

Goal away at Le Havre in 3-1 defeat in mid-season friendly under Hoddle (FA Cup 4th round weekend and we lost 2-0 at home).

I was 8 and was drenched behind Archers goal with my Dad when Leicester went 3-1 up with 5 to go. As the footy special buses that used to park at the bottom of Northlands Rd had a nasty habit of leaving before the final whistle, we legged it early.

As we later got off the bus in Swaythling, we met our neighbour who laughed about a 5-1 stuffing. We had no idea and when he said the goalie had got the last one I kicked my Dad in the leg for making me miss it.

Shilts was only 17 and it was one of his first games for Leicester and no-one here had heard of him! I had to wait for Monday's "Day By Day" to see the goal from that ****y little camera they used to stick on the roof of the West Stand.

Campbell Forsyth was in goal, having come back fom a year out with a broken leg. We had sold McLaren that summer having earlier signed Eric Martin.

I asked Shilts about it when he was here and he was genuinely embarresed about it and said it had caught a freak gust of wind and then skidded over Forsyth. Also remember that whilst he was (IMHO) our greatest ever keeper, he kicked like a girlie. :)

Mark Hughes scored at least one goal against Newcastle when we beat them 4-2 at the dell...
