saint_stevo Posted 22 May, 2009 Share Posted 22 May, 2009 He'd probably be good in league 1. That doesn't make him too good for league 1. He wasn't good enough for the CCC yet IMO. Sorry but that goal tally when playing every game of a 46 game season is poor IMO. I didn't get that excited by John getting 19. It's a long season and a poor league. If someone gets 30, then well done, that's impressive. Huge plaudits for these low totals only seems to have come about in the last 3 or 4 years and it's bizarre. I just want someone to answer why McGoldrick cannot kick a ball cleanly. Not about accuracy, forms, goals, just the ability to kick a ball. In space, however much time, he can't make a clean contact. Neilza Posted 22 May, 2009 Share Posted 22 May, 2009 I don't think he is far too good for League one, but can see why a championship club would want him! He will be a very good player imo for that league. I don't see how that many people can say he was poor last season??? He looked lazy at the start of the season, but in the second half of the season was one of our better players, consistently.
beatlesaint Posted 22 May, 2009 Share Posted 22 May, 2009 Far too good for league one, despite what many of you think. There is no way he is too good for League 1. He probably THINKS he is but until he gets either a decent work ethic or develops the skills of a Le Tissier he is not too good. He ISN'T good enough for the Premier League either.....but if he improves his attitude he may be one day.
Cobnotroll Posted 22 May, 2009 Share Posted 22 May, 2009 There's a good chance that this is true. We tried to get him permanantly before he went out on loan to Port Vale, and we do have a policy of 'putting the Nottingham back into Nottingham Forest,' etc. His finishing might be poor - the one he missed in the last game of the season was shocking! - but what's his overall game like? Is he any good at holding up the ball?

Someone must have created something. I hope we keep the lad (partly because his replacement will be worse - they alwasy are when you slip down the leagues) because he has a great first touch and offers something a little different. Is he any good at holding up the ball? First half of the season we played him as a lone striker and he was awful. Very very poor. But then second half he was played either as second striker playing just off the first or as a attacking midfielder and he was much better - he is a creative player not a battering ram. Personally I think that the perception that he was lazy was because he was completely isolated up front on his own. When playing in a better system he hasn't really seemed lazy at all. Finishing is mixed - scores some crackers and misses some sitters! Will be a very good player in the years to come I think

SET Posted 22 May, 2009 Share Posted 22 May, 2009 Never rated DMG, never will. Has the odd nice skill but that does not make up for the conrete boots, the inability to pass to one of his own consistently, and his complete lack of judgement on reading the flight of a ball. how many times when playing upfront as the target man, did he jump under the ball. Can;t fault his effort those last few months though.

I would hold out for a sizeable fee for sure ! I agree with you. Yes , he missed too many chances, but poor 'managerial' tactics were much to blame. Had we had a half-better coach than the hapless Poortvliet who played him upfront alone in front of a midfield that could hardly get above the half-way line, his goal tally would have been much better imho. McG is not a leader. He needs to be beside a play-maker that can work him. He has the tough build to survive League 1. Besides he is the best we have got. And I see no chance that we can avoid relegation in League 1 without him, because I don't see anyone else that we have who can score at least 10 goals next season. saintsmike25 Posted 22 May, 2009 Share Posted 22 May, 2009 I'm sorry but the stick he got is very undeserved. It was his first season playing regularly in a POOR side and he still managed to score goals. And yes he was played in the wrong system, despite him looking like a big strong player he isn't, he's been used as an attacking midfeilder in the academy system and played in a 4-4-2 not as a lone striker. In your first season scoring 15 odd goals is a good achievement. How do you know how much money he gets paid? frankly I wouldn't call him lazy when he played less isolated he was winning tackles and constantly running, just some people were too proud to change their opinion of him. He's also very good creativily and yes he had chances but he obviously had talent to get into the positions to have the chances, what about the great goals he scored this season? Lets face it I'd rate him at 700k and he is too good for league one, not by much but if he's in our team next season he'll get 20+ goals. We should do our best to hold onto him if we get the takeover.

Smirking_Saint Posted 22 May, 2009 Share Posted 22 May, 2009 Good scoring record from a midfielder. That is IMO where he will play his best football and the position in which he will develop better. When he played for Port Vale he played MF i believe and believe he got fans player of season ?? Maybe wrong. However he is a good player, will get better and i thought looked good. Does not help when you can't create anything to play a player on his own up front in an un-familiar role. And yes, the only reason i like him is because of my affinity towards tracksuit bottoms tucked in socks.
