The9 Posted 9 June, 2009 Share Posted 9 June, 2009 Against... um... here are the candidates... Brentford Brighton Bristol Rovers Charlton Exeter Leyton Orient Millwall MK Dons Swindon Wycombe Yeovil ...not much of a choice is it ? I'll settle for Swindon, as it's an hour by car, though Brighton is probably the most emotive, being a "South Coast Derby" and all... Anyone suggesting Yeovil or Exeter needs to look at a road map. A-Road hell and you can get to Milton Keynes in about the same time. Anyone else fancy suggesting a "derby" as we clearly don't have one...? The9 Posted 9 June, 2009 Author Share Posted 9 June, 2009 I would regard Brighton as being the Derby game. 63 miles, about 1 hr 40 away. Swindon is about 60 and 1hr 20. Brentford is 70 miles but you can get there more quickly than Brighton. AND they wear red and white stripes which must be worth something... They are former Premier League opponents. John Gorman made his name there, which should be enough for anyone. They have a stupid roundabout outside the ground. They let Claus score against them pre-season, ruining the edge of his first competitive goal. More personally: I broke down there once. Their McDonalds is absolutely filthy (well it was in 1999, and they were showing no signs of considering cleaning it by now). The Claus goal (above) occurred before I got into the match. The9 Posted 9 June, 2009 Author Share Posted 9 June, 2009 Any chance of a serious answer from anyone without an agenda? You would usually be able to go to any of them with little problem as long as you don't go looking for trouble. Millwall and Leyton Orient are not particularly pleasant though. As for 2h 22 to get to Bristol Rovers, I've done the A34/M4 AND M27/A36 routes hundreds of times going to South Wales, and either way will get you to Bristol in under 2 hours. M4 is quicker, especially as the Memorial Ground is near the M32 into Bristol from the M4.

I actually quite liked Brighton last time I went there. Having visited Swindon several times, and having seen some of the town I concur, Swindon is a dump. I almost made the mistake of moving there to be close to work a few years ago. I ended up moving to Basingstoke and having a slightly longer journey to work, and have never regretted my decision. On one visit to Swindon during the close season, one of my friends and I were walking past one of the pubs in the town centre and saw a couple of people standing outside wearing West Ham shirts, I looked at them and thought what a pair of ugly blokes they were. It was only when they started kissing each other, that I realised it was a pair of lesbians. I'm looking forward to going to the county ground with a large following of Saints fans, and also to visiting Adams Park.

the mick channon windmill Posted 9 June, 2009 Share Posted 9 June, 2009 i think its great to have so many localish clubs to play next season (hopefully only for 1 or 2 seasons though before we get promoted). im looking forward to wycombe, mk dons, leyton orient and colchesters new ground amoungst others. pompey will always be the only true derby though. we may develop small rivalries here and there and its likely clubs will want to try and develop something that isnt there as bournemouth have been trying to do with us for years now. i cringe at bournemouth when they keep this one sided rivalry going

Details: http://www.gills365.co.uk/gills365v2/2009/04/03/the-swindon-saga/ Actually I just remembered a midweek cup trip to Swindon when some of their hard nuts jumped our fans queing to get in. Dicko Posted 9 June, 2009 Share Posted 9 June, 2009 I suppose it depends what defines a 'local derby' It has to be considered a local match for both clubs to qualify. Swindon will look to Bristol Rovers, and Brentford will look to Charlton, or Leyton Orient. I suppose it would have to Brighton then, because they'll see us as being a derby

Mole Posted 9 June, 2009 Share Posted 9 June, 2009 I could be wrong but don't Brighton and Millwall have a bit of rivalry? I remember some far left activist running to the press a few years back when there was trouble at The New Den. He complained the Brighton fans were chanting "Sieg Heil". Only later did he discover they were in fact chanting "seagulls".
