You keep saying "no other moves were sanctioned" like there were loads of potential transfers out to CL level clubs that King Canute Cortese forced back with his supreme non - sanctioning power. So, remind us, during Cortese's time, what were all these £20m offers from CL level clubs that were "not sanctioned"?

I thought we were trying to stop them leaving for bigger clubs for huge salaries. The strike thing kinda only happens when the club says "no means no". Most players at all clubs all of the time aren't going on strike or threatening to. So I wouldn't focus your energy on preventing that in isolation.

I admire your lack of perspective. So we are (sorry you) are just saying a flat no based on your opinion that the players have obscene contracts and they should be grateful. But these players thinking "well I can double those wages, and play in the biggest stages in the Europe next season" - are they not being pragmatic? And players like Tadic, who might want to come to us for a couple of seasons with an eye on then progressing to a bigger club might look at our (your) flat - no stance and think actually I don't want to go there. Which ones are you saying no to? I like the fact we have given up on players believing in a "vision" and we're now basically on to some kind of hostage situation. Yes, and it was Cortese's vision as well. It's in all his interviews - the idea that he was going to "up the investment" is nonsense. He always spoke of us not being able to compete financially, and doing it in a different way. The vision Cortese had did not have us paying 18 year old left backs £160k a week. So the "dream" truly is that for the assorted dins on here, even Cortese didn't share what they have in their heads.

This post is a bit of a mess. Firstly, as you've already been asked, who are all these players at, say, Stoke, Hull & West Brom that are wanted by the CL level clubs enough for them to make £20m plus bids for them? Secondly you agree with the "dumbed down" ambition so what's the problem? Thirdly you've decided we've definitely sold five players, but also seem to be saying we will have players in the team who don't want to be here next season. Who are they then? Lastly who says we're going to be relying on the academy for the team next season? It's early July and it looks like we're in the market for two additions with more to follow I'm sure. Oh, and the answer to your Lambert/Lallana question is, simply, "yes".

...and let's remember dreams and ambition is all wonderful and that, but not if you are, say, Luke Shaw. Because Luke Shaw should not be ambitious to play for the biggest football club in the world for over a hundred grand a week. The Richard Branson thing to do would be to stay at mid table provincial team playing in front of 30k people. Yep, that's the ambition he should be showing. Luke Shaw: forget climbing Everest and stay exactly where you are.

If Cortese was still here with his Richard Branson style dreams, ambition and vision there is absolutely no way on earth Adam Lallana would want to double his wages and play in the Champions League and no way Shaw would want £100k plus a week to play for the biggest club in the world. And they'd all stay, with no pay rise, no nothing. They'd all stay on the same money because they believed in the vision and stuff about Everest or something. That is what would have definitely definitely happened oh god oh god why did Cortese have to leave.
