On 18th August 2017 he signed a new 2 year contract, why would a player with a recently signed 2 year contract not be played due to his contract situation for the rest of the 2017/18 season?

His contract expires on 30th June 2019. Would that impact on his playing time in 2017/18? Perhaps it might if he was still at Celtic in the 2018/19 season, but at the start of last season he had 2 years left on his contract. Injuries more likely to be the cause of his limited game time last season.

Mawson is only 1 inch taller than Gibson, that is hardly a huge gap in height. What makes you think Gibson is not a leader or vocal? He is Middlesbrough's captain and knows how to point...
