  1. Heaton at Burnley is a good shot stopper. Given that we need two keepers for next season, he would be worth a punt once Burnley go down
  2. Agree that JWP should be first choice penalty taker if on the pitch. Would also like to see big Vic have a go. It would take a brave keeper to get in the way.
  3. Can JWP please take all penalties from now on? That's our fourth penalty this season. I had to check, but of the previous ones, JWP was only on the pitch for the one at Burnley. Pity he didn't take that one.
  4. Some managers fit some clubs and don't fit others. Pardew at Palace is clearly a good fit all round. He doesn't have the background nonsense going on like at Newcastle. Not sure that Pardew was ever 100% comfortable with Saints. NA on the other hand was a really good match until we got back to the Premier League.
  5. We now have professional refs - so the programme no longer lists their occupation. I think that the standard of refs is actually better than it was when I first started watching, but the pressure on them is now enormous, both from players cheating and from the constant gaze of the media. Some of them have become unbelievably defensive, don't listen to players, which is how we get cases of mistaken identity. Rugby refs are miked up. I watched the last few minutes of the England game on Saturday after getting home from SMS, and the refs were standing no nonsense. I think that things are about to change. In particular: - Video reviews. There are normally only 2 or 3 really contentious incidents in a match, so if videos help the ref get these right, then all the better - Communication. We need to hear from refs after a game to explain decisions - Players. Hounding refs is becoming endemic. Should just be the player concerned and the captain with the ref. Anyone else gets booked. I occasionally catch the football league show. The number of dodgy penalties given outside the Premier League is unbelievable. Bournemouth have had 14 this season. We have had 3 Thoughts?
  6. In the circumstances I thought that KD did well yesterday. The save to keep it at 1-0 was excellent. He does need to get rid of the ball a bit quicker, but he didn't let anyone down. Given that KD will be in goal for the rest of the season, you can guarantee that RK will have him working hard on his comms with the back 4 during the next couple of weeks.
  7. Best manager - Toss up between Strachan, Adkins and Koeman Keeper - Niemi Foreigner - Lundekvam - he even speaks with a Hampshire accent now Atmosphere - One of the games v Pompey. The 2-2 draw just about gets it for me, if only for the five minutes before their second equaliser Best game - 1-1 draw v Newcastle in 2003 (I think). Just a really enjoyable game. Everyone was smiling at the end. Goal scored by a Saints player - Marsland overhead kick vs Wolves in the cup Most memorable match - Championship promotion game vs Coventry Funniest moment - the first goal vs Sunderland in the 8-0 was pretty funny. Everyone round me in the Kingsland corner was going ' did I really see that'
  8. I know that we were spoiled with SRL and MLT, who scored 80/81 penalties between them, but why does Tadic still take penalties? He missed against Burnley, and both the successful penalties against Arsenal in the LC and today were dribbled down the middle of the goal. Personally I would have big Vic taking them and just thump them in. Thought Tadic was much better today otherwise, especially in the first half.
  9. How much did the Liebherr family pay for Saints? Around £13 million if I remember correctly. Wrote off around £30million investment as shares. Would certainly recover their investment if they sold now. A foreign investor with money would be better off looking at a team in Championship/League 1. I think Leeds would be worth a punt, although their management structure would need a rebuild
  10. Completely against the current transfer policy, but I would have had Rickie Lambert back as short term cover for Pelle. He is clearly on the way down (sadly), but would have done a job for us. And we would still have profited on the transaction.
  11. I actually think that we will finish 5th or 6th anyway. Which would be a fantastic achievement, given that we have only three top 6 finishes in our history (6th in 1981, 2nd in 1984 and 5th in 1985).
  12. The Southampton strategy is clear, develop as many homegrown players as possible, and backfill with sensible buys. RK is clearly using his Dutch contacts to great effect. The good thing is that we now have a fantastic reputation for developing players and giving them a chance. We also have our pick of most of central South and South West England outside London. So there is no reason for the conveyor belt to stop. We may not break into the top floor, but we should be top half in the PL for the forseeable future. As far as playing in Europe is concerned, the choice is clear. Either reduce the size of the squad, use youngsters, or invest in a couple of English players
  13. We also won three away games in the LC, two against PL teams. So 10 away wins in total this season. That must be a record. Just checked for last season, and we won 7 away games last season in the PL as well. I have only managed 2 away games this season, but will remember both for a very long time. Arsenal in the LC and Man U in the PL. Coming out of Old Trafford having won was just fantastic.
  14. 2-1 against according to the odds I saw. Bookies think Arsenal and Man U will be 3rd/4th. Saints odds seem about right. We have a good chance of making a CL spot, but more likely to finish 5th or 6th. Either way it has been a cracking season. If we are going to make it we need to win our home games. Can't afford another slip up like Swansea.
  15. I was a student in London at the time, listening on the radio. I remember Frank McLintock as pundit being surprised how fierce the rivalry was. He had clearly done his research. When the goal was scored, the commentator paused as he wasn't quite sure what had happened, then said 'And Steve Moran has scored for Southampton'. I was insufferable that evening. Only had one topic of conversation. Made sure that the Pompey supporting friend of mine suffered.
  16. Moved to Chandlers Ford when I was 4. Dad took me to Toomers to buy a football shirt when I was 8 for games lessons at junior school. I wanted a Man City shirt as they had just won the cup. Got bought a red and white striped shirt instead! Saw my first game aged 9 in 1971. Saints beat Stoke 2-1. Ron Davies scored the winner and Gordon Banks was in goal for Stoke. Got hooked. 44 years later still watching Saints. Must admit that the period since the Johnstone Paints trophy win has been the most enjoyable time watching Saints of the 44 years. Just about tops the McMenemy era of the early eighties.
  17. More lazy journalism. My guess is that Morgan will be off in the Summer, assuming that he still wants to go. The only way that he might stay is if we qualify for the CL. The most important thing this summer is to keep RK.
  18. Don't get to many away games, but went yesterday as had a chance of a first visit to Old Trafford. Thought that it would be a tight game, which it was. The organization and workrate of Saints was superb. Couldn't get over how 73,000 people could be so quiet though, especially after we scored. Having seen the replay of the goal it showed just how well Tadic did to set up Pelle. Pelle worked his backside off. Found the locals at the game a friendly bunch, even coming back on the tram after the game. Must be that it's just the plastic Man U fans who are complete kn*bs. Excellent day out.
  19. It seems to me that Taylor defends every single player regardless of what they've done. He seems to think he's job is to defend them which it isn't (that's for his lawyers). It's representing the player body and if that is going against one player then so be it.

    Ched Evans

Just seen Gordon Taylor on the news comparing the Ched Evans case to Hillsborough. He will regret these comments. Expect a backlash against him in the media.
  21. To stop trying to change the half-time entertainment to anything but the relay.
  22. Still gonna go I think. Will be the last game I can go to before I'm off to Africa so a nice Saints win away from home will be appropriate.
  23. Went to the Emirates for the LC game. They built a really wide bridge over the railway that we used. But then the Emirates cost £400 million and SMS cost £32 million. The bridge to Northam road was built on the cheap. If SMS was ever extended then I am sure that it would have to be rebuilt.
  24. PM'd you...
  25. So no word of a lie, I know her. Just sent her a snapchat now.
