He made a statement explaining his decision. He obviously sorted out the appointment while Nigel was still in the job. He's not the first chairman to do this and won't be the last. At least we didn't have a Dodd/Gorman caretaker scenario. He didn't attend the press conference because it was about the new manager, not a sideshow. To be fair, he's been pretty honest. Whether you agree with him is another matter, but he has been pretty up front. He didn't rate Nigel, so he's got someone in who he thinks will do better. Matt is more than entitled to his opinion. He spoke very well on Sky yesterday. I think we all know where he stands on the subject.

Pretty shabby how Adkins was sacked. But there is a natural balance in all this. Hoddle did the dirty on us, Strachan walked out, even Lawrie walked out on us. It's football. There is very little loyalty at any level of this professional sport. It's the game as a whole, and is not confined to just our club. Le Tissier has every right to have his say on this, as he is one of the only ones in the game to have displayed such loyalty. The contempt shown to Cortese from others in the game smells a bit like hypocrisy though.

The SISA lot will use it to publicise themselves, as usual. They will be the first in front of the cameras speaking on behalf of everyone, and will milk it for all it's worth. The others will be doing it because they love the club.

I've been away all week, flew back home this morning. Was well pleased with a point v Chelsea. I freely admit, I was very much in the minority earlier in the season when I thought the club would be best served by replacing Adkins. But, again admit, I was proved wrong. We look a far more solid side now, and have had a decent run in the last dozen or so games. So I am amazed that Cortese has chosen to do this now. I feel extremely sorry for Nigel Adkins. I am now extremely worried about our chances of staying up now, when a few hours earlier I wasn't. I wish Adkins well. I am more than a bit gutted at the moment.

I think Liverpool are interested in another player, Diakite, a defender. Zarate not interested in going to Besiktas, as he wants to play in Spain or England.

Don't see why an international should go on trial to a mid-table side like Liverpool anyway. Maybe Rodgers should have given a trial to Allen. He might have noticed he couldn't play a forward pass before paying £15m for him.

Sign Hangeland to play alongside him. Out of contract soon. Astori deal looks similar to the Sneyder one. Club agreed terms with a team he doesn't really want to play for, so will wait for other offers.

He is class in his best position through the middle. He often makes decent runs, demands the ball, but doesn't get it. Just as much a case of others getting used to him, as the other way round. He'll get better and better in my opinion.

Mata's dive was just as bad, but the difference is that Chelsea have about 5 players who dive every week.

Judgement call needed on this at some point in the window then. We might get away with it at Villa, but not having a new centre half in for the Everton game would be suicidal.
