Summed up the season really. Another nail in the relegation coffin. In a game against a somewhat weakened Arsenal where a point was very much within our grasp we flatter with some nice football but when it comes to the toughness to hold onto a point we go like jelly defensively. Third goal was awful, Tadic getting owned by Iwobi, stephens getting caught unable to reach the header, cedric weak as baby at the back post. Even worse is that we'd been let off from a virtual carbon copy five minutes earlier when Wellbeck shanked over from a yard out. I like Stephens but hope he gets fined. I'm all for passion but being an idiot and leaving up with limited centre back options for 3 games isn't good. Midfield and attack deserve to keep their places against chelsea. Romeu was much better than he's been much of this season and Long was fantastic.

Much better passion & performance generally. Still we are going down as defensively we are a shambles. Cedric may have been good going forward today but he was a nightmare defensively. All this season we've shown a complete inability to hang onto any sort of lead That was very much a game we should have got a point out of against a weakened arsenal team. MOM: Long

I'd have severe doubts. We have so many highly paid players who i think wouldn't be interested in staying & fighting to get us back. Equally if Hughes does nothing to keep us up i wouldn't be keen on him in the Champ. Much prefer we went & got Adkins back. That would require paying Hull though which our board wouldn't want to do. Only positive is that it might see a few of the younger lads actually getting a run (Mcqueen, Gallagher, Targett, Hesketh, sims)
-
Arsenal winning at least. If only Saints would actually put some effort in during their games.
-
Hard to pick a team given the 11 that played today don't really deserve to start. Mccarthy Pied Stephens Yoshida Bertrand Romeu Hojberg Sims Hesketh Boufal Long Subs: Forster, Hoedt, Lemina, JWP, Austin, Gabbi, Tadic
-
Think you are being extremely generous that we are even going in at 30% for 50/50's. 95-5 more like.
-
Completely embarrassing. Even worse than the wigan fiurst half. Completely disorganised. No pressure on the opposition when they have the ball. No desire to compete. Hopeless long ball football. Horrible errors for the goals. The entire 11 should be dropped for the next game. Third goal really summed it up. Gutless when we had the ball. Let them waltz up the pitch and cross for a tap in.

Conceding from our our corner. Our complete ineptitude continues.

Thank goodness Salah has scored. Willing to support Liverpool just to keep Palace down with us.

Disappointing to see Sims hasn't even made the bench. Hope Austin is sharp enough after so long out.

Hughes Hyperthetical Summer Transfer Window

Replace yoshida with a Zouma or a martins Indi to give us better balance at centre back. Hoedt hasn’t been the dominant presence hoped for when he was signed. As good as Shaqiri is he isn’t what we need. We already have boufal/tadic in that sort of playmaker mould. Plus I also think Hesketh’s talented too. What we need is a pacey direct attacking midfielder. -
Cork is the one I feel sorry for when I see Livermore in the squad.

Thought he telegraphed which side he was going for and it wasn’t high enough or low enough personally. -
That bbc draw was a bit inept. Had Wigan or Southampton come up in bar with numbers and then presenter completely got the draw wrong in her summary. Reasonably happy with the draw.

Jekyll and Hyde. First half utterly horrible. 2nd so much more composed. Got to give Hughes credit for actually causing an effect with his ht team talk and reasonable tactical moves. On the negative side, can we please have someone on penalties able to confidently place it right in the corner. Don’t care how hard gabbi hit it bbc it was a perfect height for a goalkeeper. Ohh and Carrillo is still garbage. Long was much better in his cameo imo. -
Awful from Saints. Constant horrible long ball fare with still no end product. Not sure i’d Pay 19p for Carrillo. Very sporting of him to give the ball back to their keeper when he dropped it! Get sims and long on.
-
Glad to see Gabbi in. Disappointed to see Carrillo is still in. Would have liked to see Hesketh on the bench too. I'll be interested to see how Boufal/Tadic handle the conditions & being roughed up a little.

Sure we can try and get them. However they are the much harder games. Arsenal home record is extremely impressive. Man City have lost in the league once this season. I'd love to be confident of beating Chelsea at home but over the last few seasons we haven't beaten a top 5 side & they are going to be pretty desperate to catch Spurs in 4th. Both Everton and Leicester are tough away games i'd normally take a draw from. If we don't maximise our points in the 3 very winnable games we are going to require much more bonus points from the tougher ones.
-
Looking pretty bad for Saints. Simply have to beat West Ham next week. Then get wins against Swansea & Bournemeouth. Then anything from tough ties against Chelsea, Leicester, Everton, Arsenal, Man City is bonus points.

Official..Southampton appoint Mark Hughes.

Not someone i wanted anywhere near Saints as manager. Glad at least it's only a contract to the end of the season. Let's just hope he can do enough to keep us out of the relegation zone. -
Nice to see Nigel doing well.
-
Putting stoke on the relegation zone was such a fantastic achievement.
-
being lumbered with the just as useless Hughes long term compared to a useless manager who would be gone in the summer is such glorious news isn’t it.
-
Yes I have. What’s comical is that we appear to be after a manager who has performed poorer than Pellegrino this season in league and FA Cup. Next we’ll find out Pardew is their second choice because he is doing such a fantastic job at wba.
