Would be good in league 1. tbf this article hasnt got a quote from WT himself, if he is a really a good bloke (as reported) then i would expect him to take a pay cut so as to stick by the club that stood by him for a year when he wasnt playing

He just got payed 8k a week for doing nothing for a year so it wont be a huge blow for him

Always remember after he signed for us the then Burnley Manager Cotterall (sp) on TalkSport saying he sold Thomas for over a million and bought a far better player for £250,000 I think! That player was Clarke Carlisle who will now ply his trade in The Premiership.

In St George we trusted!

He owes us big time.........£8000pw for what?.......virtually non event so far.........if worth keeping he should renegotiate the whole thing, but in today's money oriented world I guess thats just a dream...........best just let him go asap and put it down to another poor signing with all the others that have conrtibuted to Saints being where they are today

Surely the key point is, no-one else is going to pay him 8k. In fact, it's unlikely anyone will pay him more than we're willing to offer now. Would he make a CCC team? Maybe. But he'd have to uproot and move for very little. So if he has anything about him, surely acknowledge he's at the biggest club he's been at, done nothing, and should try to prove himself. But he needs to take a paycut to do so. Hanging around on 8k a week at a club in admin would be fairly ****.

Yes but he may get a two or three year contract for £5k a week somewhere else.

I would have thought his agent would be interested in making some money out of him

Agreed that Thomas is too expensive for us. We can't afford to pay anybody who is going to spend the entire season in the treatment room.

We dont know that yet until the new owners come in and appoint a manager who decides whether he is worth his salary. Size and Perry are OK but Thomas could be awesome in this league.

As a matter of interest who was Burley's best signing

Apart from John/Davis there is nobody I think was very good awaste of £7 or so million

rasiak but he was a no brainer IMO..alraedy could do the business at the CCC level...

burleys dealings in the transfer market was pretty poor/average IMO..such a shame

I cant think of any other manager who troughed through so much money with so little to show for it.

I don't get why he would "owe us" anything? Because he was injured and we paid his salary last year? He got injured doing his work for Southampton so why should he owe us something for that? Its not like he's been sitting on his ass last year. Rehab can be more demanding then actually training and playing, if not physically then mentally. He's worked his ass of just not on the pitch which can hardly be blamed on him. Its not his fault that we're not insured against injuries.

Well fair enough but you must agree that he should feel some debt to the club that payed for, and ensured the best quality rehab?

To a certain extend but I do not see why he should voluntarily take less wages or demote himself to a pay-as-you-play deal. If he can similar contracts at us and an other club I think he owes it to the club to stay but in the end these are professional football players and eventhough 8 grand a week is a ****load of money many players need to live this for the rest of their lives.

Shame really as Thomas would be decent in League One and we could certainly do with his experience.

However, 8K a week really is too much, especially for Saints. If he doesn't get a move elsewhere, maybe he'd consider a pay-cut?

I don't see how Wotte can say that "Thomas is too expensive" when it remains far from clear what budget we'll be operating with this coming season - unless he knows something we don't (surly not )

No L1 club should pay 8k per week no matter what owner they have. It is financial suicide and we have been down that route before and look where it got us.

As an aside its worth pointing out that Thomas didnt have any wage drop clause in his contract as he hasnt signed when Lowe was in charge. Shocking decision by whoever this was!

I'm all in favour of a prudent wage bill but the record shows WT has 12 months left on his contract , if he doesn't want to go we'll just have to pay him what was agreed - these are the facts of footballing life .

We can't rely on Chris Perry playing as many games as he miraculously managed last season , Michael Svensson & JPS are also out of the picture (at this time anyway) so I'd suggest experienced defenders (such as a fit Wayne Thomas) will have an important role to play .

We really don't want to start yet another season short of centre backs do we ? - been there done that . :(

I'd be inclined to keep Thomas if we could do a deal with him on reducing those wages. He's 29ish and probably settled in the area and seems hungry to play for us and he'd excel at L1 level and let's face it, we haven't had a decent CB play at the club since Svensson got injured and Claus slowed up. Baird's committment and two stunning goals got him the Fulham move but he wasn't that solid at CB - how many sloppy/late goals did we concede in 06/07, particularly from set pieces?

Firstly, this is an Echo rehash of a Wotte quote from about April. There is no news here.

Secondly, if we get new owners then we need him. He's a good solid centre back who if fit, will be one of the best in the division. We really can't afford to have Olly Davenport ... sorry...Lancashire in the side as he's complete sh!te.

Exactly.

I was so pleased when he was announched as manager. Turned out to be a complete disaster for the club.:smt085

Rasiak, Safri,Saganowski, Idiakez (when fit) and Vignal were all good signings.

That's a tad harsh IMO. We were only a couple of penalties away from the play-off final, so to say he was a complete disaster is pretty unfair. Admittedly, his reign ended on a bad note, but he wasn't far from being a great manager for us. Had we got promoted that season, and make no mistake about it, we were very close to doing so, then people's opinions of him would be considerably different.

If you mean any other manager, not just SFC, hows about Keane? He managed to **** £80m up the wall I believe

Thomas's wages are too high for League one but IF we do get taken over by somebody early next week willing to throw money at the club then his wages maynot be a problem.

thats the biggest "IF" ive ever seen, and i've seen a few

Nobody can foresee a player getting a bad injury.

His medical highlighted problems with his knee that was likely to cause a serious injury at some point, and the official recommendation was that we didn't sign him.

Unfortunately, we were so desperate to sign a centre-back that we ignored that advice.

We also paid three times more than other clubs felt he was worth. Coventry offered just £300k for him.
