aintforever Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 I would say we definitely need: A first choice left back, leaving Mills as cover. Cover for James at Right Back. A replacement for Saeijs, along with Perry, Thomas and Lancashire that should see us OK for CBs. A left sided midfielder - Holmes is perma-injured. At least 1 striker with pace - depending on who we keep out of BWP, Rasiak, John ect.

ladysaint Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 We have too many goalkeepers and not enough backs, going by the performance yesterday we would need at least 10 players to cover for injuries etc.
Clifford Nelson Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 We have played three friendlies, drawn against non-league opposition and a loss against Bournemouth. Let's not fall for the non-sense that the results don't matter, because they do. So far we've been practicing losing and a fair bit bit of humiliation. To take that becomes easier and easier for every game that goes past. If the only thing we need is 45 minutes runout, then why don't we have that at Staplewood between ourselves? This is no way to prepare for the season ahead. If we compare with previous seasons, we know that a result poor pre-season is a guarantee for a poor season. I'm surprised that I'm saying this, but this squad is not anywhere near good enough to even guarantee survival in League 1. It suffers all the hallmarks of old which must be removed for us to have any success. We should assert our superiority against opposition like the ones we've had, and walk away with our confidence improved, but instead we lay down and die, followed by any reason for why it doesn't matter. This squad need major surgery, and not the odd addition of loans and free transfers. If it has got the talent, which I doubt, then it needs a transplant in the backbone department. Complacent is the word for what it, and who is the manager who knows how to uproot it?
Giordano Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 clifford nelson i like the cut of your jib. i agree with what you said........ But on a slightly more bright side i think that the opportunity to totally reconstruct a team from scratch out of necessity rather than as vanity project is one that a manager with ambition would love to get hold of...... its quite possible that the entire squad willchange over the next 2 /3 years...one squad to get out this league, one changing squad to get out championship and another beefed up quality one to survive and thrive in the premiership....thats the challenge facing the RIGHT manager....is that just one manager though? Will the guy capable of getting us out of these leagues be able to cope in the premiership? It may be that we have more managerial turmoil ahead. ..........But if it was wgs i think the answer is yes he coud do all three, but i doubt he can be arsed tbh.. I think you might well be right, but who could do the first job needed here, which is to change the entire mindset of the playing squad. That doesn't come from shouting at players, which the Pearson supporters believe, but requires more subtle understanding of how to get an entire club out of complacency. And by the way is there anybody out there who is working better for being shouted at? Maybe we would need a very experienced Sporting Director who the manager could actually respect. Katalinic Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 I think we probably need 9 players if we are going to make a go of it this season. The majority of the players on show so far are not ready for the first team. There are plenty of good, experienced (not old) free transfers out there at the moment. Clifford Nelson Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 Euell, BWP, John, Murty and Thompson HTH What has BWP ever done for us wanting to retain him? He doesn't score and can't focus on the game, so he hasn't been playing regularly in the Championship for us even though we've struggled badly. His mindset is everything we don't need. Euell can't score and is far from convincing in midfield. Thompson hasn't been able to maintain a professional contract and has been playing for an amateur side. Out of that list only Murty sounds interesting if he is still up for playing and not only for being paid.
SW11_Saint Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 I'd say we honestly need 7-8, maybe more. Especially if we want to make a real push for the play-offs. Our squad is decimated - we weren't good enough last year, and we've lost quality since then. Squad needs an almost total transfusion.
Nexstar Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 4 or 5 added to BWP, John and Euell coming back. Get Murty in, also need a left back, central midfielder and a right winger.

The Fat Controller Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 I think we have an oppurtunity to prune the dead wood. I can see the Davis and Poke being our main keepers 3rd string Tommy Forecast. Bialkowski send out on loan In defence we need Murty if he's fit and JP Saeijs if he will come back now Wotte's gone. Another 2 i'd sign is Alan Bennett and Vignal. That would give us strength at the back. Midfield we have to get an experienced ball winner a last year we missed Safri , on the wing where we are short would Glenn Little be worth a punt - Ok he's a skate but we would get him cheap and if he could reproduce his Reading form that would be good. Strikers BWP and Euell both garbage so get rid, some one like Brett Ormerod would get us loads in this league and play him with Stern John and use Paterson as back up
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 We need to keep about 4 players from last season. The rest should be cleared out and footballers brought in to replace them. You can't polish a turd.

Euell maybe less so, but given the chance in league 1 I can see BWP scoring a lot of goals. He's quick and can finish.
SaintBobby Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 I know Euell isn't a fans' favourite, but I'd retain him. He's a commanding presence and shows leadership on the pitch. I think he could do a good job as CM or CF in League One. His wages should nosedive though. Saeijs would be a great signing. We desperately need a tall, strong centre back. You can't polish a turd. Not strictly true. I was on an archaeological dig once when some mineralised coprolites (turds) were unearthed containing fool's gold or iron pyrites - they buffed up a treat! ottery st mary Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 Euell is a centre half waiting to happen and if retained I would have played him there....Big problem with wages for an experiment though...Like BWP he will probably be off with quite a few others. PercyR Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 Henderson on SSN yesterday said this, does this mean he has been told this /we have a manager lined up? or was he guessing? My guess would be that the new manager has already been signed up and is currently scouting for new players. I can't believe they would have got rid of MW so quickly if no one was in the frame already so don't be surprised if the new manager is announced as early as tomorrow. david in sweden Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 Henderson on SSN yesterday said this, does this mean he has been told this /we have a manager lined up? or was he guessing? I think he's more ITK than a lot of people, but even I guessed we needed 4-5 new signings before August. It's along, tough season ahead. Look at our injury list already in September LAST season . M.Svensson OUT Powell OUT Thomas OUT....... plus a number of the promising Academy lads, too. ...not to mention Ollie's red cards and assorted suspensions. We need the squad players in depth to last out the season. defenders and midfielders NOW ..and more strikers in January.
