Barry Horne Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 Agree. He did well when he was here but sounds like things have not gone too well for him since. The thing Murty brings to the table (apart from a lot of food by the look of him) is experience. That's what we need right now.

Saintjersey Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 I would get Ifil and Murty in as I'm not sure if Murty can last a whole season, also means James can push up to midfield if needed.
Channon's Sideburns Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 Have any of you seen Murty in a Saints shirt? Yep...reminds me of the standard of players we USED to sign. Daft and stupid if we overlook him.
SNSUN Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 (edited) Free right backs are all over the place this summer! As well as Murty and Ifil, there's also Volz. If we really want to strengthen the squad, we need two right backs, leaving James to play in his favoured position in midfield. The last thing I'd want to see halfway through the season is Thomas at right back due to injuries... Edited 30 July, 2009 by SNSUN I don't want Wayne Thomas to die, it's just that I don't want him to be alive anymore. Wes Tender Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 Ifil wasn't bad when he was here, but he's got a long way to go to be considered anywhere as good as Murty has been or could still be, when he's fully match fit.

red&white56 Posted 31 July, 2009 Share Posted 31 July, 2009 I haven't yet seen Murty but i was impressed with Ifil when he was on loan with us. However I don't think he made a big impression at C.Palace after he left us. I would favour getting him in as part of the squad.
saints_is_the_south Posted 31 July, 2009 Share Posted 31 July, 2009 I always thought Ifil did a good job for us, was dissapointed that we never signed him permantly. I'd certainly be in favour of signing him now, with him & Murty and also Lloyd James we'd be well covered at right back.

Confusing him with Chris Makin? Another fullback we signed from Reading? Who should never have played at centre back but did at Saints because he'd played it once at school. Arizona Posted 31 July, 2009 Share Posted 31 July, 2009 Having two specialist right backs is a waste of time. If Murty gets injured then we can look at loans. By that logic, we need 11 players, then what? 2 utility men strikers, midfielders, defenders and back-up goalies. That's a squad of 19 players? Each to their own, but I'd take both given choice. In the recent past we've had Dodd and Telfer, Baird and Ostlund, Bridge and Benali, Le Saux and Bernard, Makin and Bale etc. Anyway, I can 99% guarantee Murty will have an injury at some point this season. Why wait until then and rush some emergency loan into the side.

We know that Lloyd James can fill in if Murty has a tweak...if it's longer term we get a loan in...this idea that Lloyd James will now be pushing into central midfield full time is a little flight of fancy to my mind...i'd be impressed if he made twenty midfield appearances this season... Why should we plan on going into a season knowing that as soon as a player gets injured in one possition, we're going to have to distort the whole team to fill in the gaps. It'll just end up like the start of the 07/08 season under Burley, with 3 midfielders in our defence. Take a read of the last paragraph. This guy wasn't that bad a manager if we're being honnest. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/mourinho-looks-to-take-chelsea-between-the-lines-553857.html

I just can't see Lloyd James going into this season being first choice for a centre mifield spot i'm afraid (and the Hearts game backs that up) in fact i suspect signings will be made which will push him further down that pecking order as well. As such having just played a full season in the position this makes him a pretty good back up for the position...and also allows us the opportunity to start bedding him into the position he will ultimately end up playing in, centre midfield. Cover for two positions he can playcomfortably...certainly not distorting the team though as he won't be first choice centre mid... Aside from all this Ifill doesn't want to come to Saints to play second fiddle to another player at this stage in his career i'm sure so it's a complete non starter... Wouldn't have him in CM at all TBH. Gillett would be in there, but his partner would have to be a big lad with a decent range of passing. Pele would be the ideal player for me, but that's just an example. James would be my first choice RM. Lallana is a striker or nothing IMO. James' crossing is far better. Davis Murty Thomas Perry Mills James Gillett ???? Harding/Holmes Lallana Rasiak or summit like that.
Bailey Posted 31 July, 2009 Share Posted 31 July, 2009 Have a feeling it might be the other Ifil that is available on a free, but if Phil is out-of-contract, then I would consider snapping him up as well as Murty. If we did that, then Lloyd James would be available to play in his favoured position in midfield! He could do just as good a job as Wotton does alongside Gillett, if not better.
