For the first 10 viewings they looked awful, but he showed how the ball had slowed up off the pitch and they were both forced to be a little out in their timing. Cannot see them getting 250 in the 4th Innings but then it will be so tight one mistake could swing it so the further over 300 the better So reckon we need over 130 and that we could struggle, but if we are going to win this then one of the bowlers has to be the hero in the 2nd innings. Or Trott will do it. History says it won't be Freddie (in a Bradmanesque way) Broad has had his moment, COULD he do it again or is it time for the old Harmy to come back for one last hurrah? [-o Actually regardless of the 3 wickets it was still a great day for England and given the Aussies strange decision not to field a specialist spinner that could well prove crucial though I wished we had fielded Panesar or Rashid instead of Harmison. So if you add 80 to what we have already, then I think 300 IS a big ask, and if we can get past that by batting through until after lunch it would give us 150 overs and scoring at even 2 an over may not be easy in the 4th Innings. Can Trott, Prior & Flintoff get those 80 more runs between them with the tail chipping an extra 20/30 runs?... THAT's the big question, allows Strauss to attack At the end of the day, if Freddie can stay in for 90 minutes against the part time spinners........... Hence I'm really hoping and optimistic we can get past the Aussies 1st innings score and hopefully they'll need to be chasing around 350. I think we're already close to having enough, but even worst case scenario that we only get 100 more will surely be enough on this pitch. I see that all the main Aussie papers are having a right whinge about it. Agree that it would be nice if we had Monty or Rashid but am sure we'll be alright. LOL at the Aussies for not picking a spinner on this pitch - I think it's fair to say that Ponting and the Aussie selectors wont be on Warne's Christmas card list! As for the pitch well if I were the groundsman I wouldn't be looking to produce a belter of a pitch in a game which England needed to win. The heavy roller seems to take the life out the pitch for a couple of hours so would expect to see fun and games starting around lunchtime tomorrow. Strauss almost acknowledged that with his field settings. Had a load of work to do today but just sat and enjoyed, the tension and the nurdling in the morning and the splatting at the end. Can't believe we got a lead over 500, if you'd told us that at the beginning we'd have called for men with white suits. But after their start, damned glad we DO have that lead. Let tomorrow be Freddie's day though, c'mon on Big Man upstairs, just this once, PLEASE can we have a happy ending and a perfect send off to tell our grandkids about? PLEASE? It really wasn't that long ago he was on the verge of being dropped, and then the only big scores he could make were through grabbing ones and twos. And now against the Aussies he's playing some beautiful, aggressive cricket. Whilst Trott, Broad and (hopefully) Swann can spend the rest of their lives claiming that they were the one who really won the game and the Ashes for England, let us not forget little put-upon Bell, who's unconvincing 72 played a massive role in getting the team past the horror of the forth test.
