Big_Bald_Si Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 (edited) Now - it might be a bold statement, but I've been incredibly unimpressed so far. Why he starts ahead of Schneiderlin, I'm really not sure. Was at the game today, and I kind of got the impression he thinks he's better than he actually is. Tried to be too flash at times, with his extravagant pass and shot attempts. Jury's still out of course, but what are your thoughts thus far? Edited 5 September, 2009 by Big_Bald_Si spelling error! Nexstar Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 Think he is a really good addition to the team, seems solid at passing and isn't afraid to have a shot. Unless of course you'd prefer Wotton...
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 He's was ok today, nothing more. Col U. fans commented after the game that he doesn't look the same player he did for them. Today he just hoofed it too much IMO, although i guess in a way he was dictated to do that by having no one to pass to. He'll get better - once he gets to grips with our team (and we get width). I'd start him alongside morgan...and stick Lloydy back at RB.
Rebel Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 Has to be Hammond and Morgan in the middle next game - and leave James on the bench at best I thought Hammond looked good - better than the alternatives anyway he got better as the game went on - probably trying a bit too hard against his old team initially

He's exactly what we need in the centre, he makes space with intelligent movement, uses the ball well and is a great passer. It's not his fault that everytime he passed it to an 'attacking player' they proceeded to cross it into touch or hit it against a Colchester player. It should definitely be Hammond and Morgan in the centre, james was v.poor today
niceandfriendly Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 Thought Hammond did okay in the middle today as did Lloyd James, but that was it. They didn't create anything worth while. They didn't look threatened either, but I think that was more due to the fact that Colchester were the worst team to come down here for many years. Oh and will the Northam PLEASE stop shouting for players to shoot from miles out - it goes to their head and they believe they can do it. Harding, Thomas, James and indeed Hammond. None of them can shoot from far out, as showed by Hammonds terrible attempts today (apart from 1 good one out of about 6). Cheers:)
kpturner Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 He is a league 1 player who has played for Colchester and Brighton (maybe one or two others - dunno). How good were you expecting him to be? Steven Gerrard he ain't, but I think he is a decent player for us at this level.

converted_saint Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 James at RB = disaster IMO. I thought he had a decent game today (certainly did as much as anyone else) and I think he and Hammond can do really well for us in the middle. As for the final third...let's hope Papa Waigo can do the business pace and creativity-wise!
RedAndWhite91 Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 I thought Hammond looked really good today. He spread the ball well as well as holding it up when needed. He has good awareness and can read the game well in my opinion. He also wasn't scared to shoot, having a few good efforts on goal. I have no complaints with Hammond and think he will do well for us in the middle of the park.

hugh Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 I think the thing people are forgetting is that all players need a while to settle in to a team and when so many players are doing the same thing, it is always going to be difficult. Once they develop confidence in themselves and each other, then we will really begin to motor.

BallBoy Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 Have to disagree. We all think differently but he was my man of the match. I think he is just what we need to direct the midfield and keep things going. He is a magnet to the ball and directs play intelligently. He rarely loses possession. In this league he is probably the closest we will get to an Alan Ball, Jimmy Case or Chris Marsden. I am not saying he is as good as them but he is the equivalent for League 1. I don't think he is there to be our most creative player but he is the one to get the best out of others.

macthesaint Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 Thought Hammond looked okay, decent midfielder in this league. OfnPanad Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 I thought Hammond was excellent today. Ran the midfield in the first half. Faded in the second but so did our whole team. Excellent signing at a real bargain price.
Bailey Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 He'll prove to be a key player for us this season. Makes himself available, isn't afraid to get stuck in and likes a shot from distance too. Would like to see him and Schneiderlin in the middle and I wouldn't be surprised if Pards went with that duo for the Charlton game.
krissyboy31 Posted 6 September, 2009 Share Posted 6 September, 2009 Hammond played well but needs a more creative player to play along side him. The team looked much better once Morgan came on. Can't understand why he wasn't playing from the start, to me James does nothing. Not a CMF player and not a RB and hasn't got the pace to be a RW! NickG Posted 6 September, 2009 Share Posted 6 September, 2009 I liked seeing him getting the face of the other team yesterday - deliberately throw the ball hard in players mid region when he delayed a free kick. Not saying I want team of bad sportsman but when did we last have a player who would p!ss off opposition?
mcjwills Posted 6 September, 2009 Share Posted 6 September, 2009 Hammond was better than anything we had in midfield last year by a country mile, including Schneiderlin. He may not have blistering pace, but he know how to hold the ball up, can gave a good pass most of the time (what do you expect for league 1, if he was that much better hed be in the premiership), and most of all he has a footballing brain in his head and thinks, not just lumping it to nobody. Whitey Grandad Posted 6 September, 2009 Share Posted 6 September, 2009 He's still settling in. Once he gets a few games under his belt with players around him that he's familiar with then I think we'll see his true quality.
forever a red and white Posted 6 September, 2009 Share Posted 6 September, 2009 persoanlly i would have James at RB while Murty is out and have morgan and Hammond in the middle they would compliment ech other pefectly. Hammmond does the basic nitty gritty, morgan the creativity, whcih we lacked on saturday
alpine_saint Posted 6 September, 2009 Share Posted 6 September, 2009 I thought Hammond a good signing. And I still do. However, it is worrying to hear that a Colchester fan asked a Saints fan yesterday about what the f**k we've done to him.... And I am wondering if this doesnt apply to just him. Rickie Lambert seems to be going backwards fast too...

Those two haven't been great but Harding has probably been our best player this season, Trotman and Murty (pre injury) both settled well too. Give them time and it will come. Can`t take the Colchester fans view to seriously imo as it may be just sour grapes a trait used regularly on here after players have departed. saint stu 20 Posted 7 September, 2009 Share Posted 7 September, 2009 we have to play morgan and hammond in the middle, lloyd for me is abit weak in the middle, although cant fault his effort for me he just doesnt cut it completely in the middle yet. SaintDonkey Posted 7 September, 2009 Share Posted 7 September, 2009 I think both Hammond and Lambert are suffering from playing in an unsettled disspirited team. It's going to take more time for the new players to get used to each other and for the old players to escape the losing mentality that plagued last season. We're still effectively in 'pre-season'. However that excuse is wearing thin and we must get it together by the Yeovil game.

IMO Thomas looked very comfortable (and impressive even) at RB in the first 1/2 and gave us a lot of attacking options with Mellis ahead. This all but disappeared when Thomas went to CB and James to RB.
