pilsburydoughboy Posted 14 November, 2009 Share Posted 14 November, 2009 I watched the 76 cup final on the telly in our front room of our terraced house. The room was filled with all the local kids as we had the only colour telly in the close. I will never forget the sight of the guy from number three running around the back yard screaming they've done it at the top of his voice when we scored. He had tears streaming down his face as he ran.The whole screaming episode continued when the final whistle went but with most of the adult population of the close joining in. I saw this guy again today for the first time in twenty years and it sparked off a memory lane ramble. Where did others watch the game and got any memories to share of that great day.I have seen all the clips of the bus tours etc but just wanted to see if others can remember any odd ball moments from the day. EastleighSoulBoy Posted 14 November, 2009 Share Posted 14 November, 2009 We all went up by coach. Stopped at Windsor for a beer or ten. The O.B. escorted us into the town with us lot singing YNWA. Wondered why everyone was staring, turned to find Rich Coakley (R.I.P.) with his trousers held up instead of a scarf! One of many laughs that day. Chris Gillespie sorting out quite a few Mancs who he felt had got too lippy. Don't mess with Chris! Singing rude songs to some Swedish tourists, they just loved our Yellow shirts. Getting my chin split open when Dave Stewart and I encountered some Mancs in the concourse. Pernod squirting out of the split when I necked at the bottle when we got back on the coach. Barry Backshell falling off a table in the Spa. Curry at 05.30 in The Manzil. They're all coming back now!

chocco boxo Posted 14 November, 2009 Share Posted 14 November, 2009 Was there as an 11 year old with a broken leg. Mum, Dad, sister cousin and Uncle all there. The whole day summed up by "and Southampton go mad". On way home Dad driving round the rose gardens about 10 times as one young girl was kissing every car driver as they went round!!! He even borrowed a Yellow Cortina from his works for the day! Shiver down spine till this day!
pilsburydoughboy Posted 14 November, 2009 Author Share Posted 14 November, 2009 After the game we all rode our bikes up to the bridge across the motorway and watched all the cars and coaches coming home. It was brilliant as all the cars honked their horns and flashed their lights. At the age of six it felt like the whole world was Southampton Football Club. suewhistle Posted 14 November, 2009 Share Posted 14 November, 2009 I was a student at S Uni, and just happened to be a Saints fan..... We organised a coach up to Wemberley and had a great day.The lads and lasses who organised the banners over the M3 did a great job (and I believe there were a few on the M1 on the way into London from the North too!). It wasn't just a Soton thing. Being there was great, but the journey back was magic too, let alone that night in Southampton City Centre... you'll forgive me if memories are hazy...! suewhistle Posted 14 November, 2009 Share Posted 14 November, 2009 ..and the the parade through Southampton.. My Grandad from Eastleigh was getting on a bit by then, but sat in his chair in Portswood and raising his stick to the coach with a big grin on his face: he was noticed by Ossie who nudged a team-mate.. makes me wet-eyed to think of it... camdijk Posted 14 November, 2009 Share Posted 14 November, 2009 (edited) I wasn't able to watch it live, so had to listen on the radio laying on my bunk on HMS Blake just off the north coast of Scotland. My mate (a United supporter) was on his bunk opposite me and we had bet each other a fiver on the result. (He never did pay up) I did go to the semi final at Stamford Bridge against C. Palace and remember Malcolm Allison promising to eat his fedora if they lost. Edited 14 November, 2009 by camdijk
John Boy Saint Posted 14 November, 2009 Share Posted 14 November, 2009 My Sister and I were staying with my Granny & Grandad in Shirley, seeing the town getting whipped up in Cup Fever even at 11 could not be missed. Saturday came and we watched everything on TV including FA Cup Its a Knockout (that was always great on Cup Final day) if memory serves me right they had highlights of the Southampton Ladies team (who were fairly invincible themselves in those days if memory serves me well) lifting the ladies cup; so winning Its a Knockout and the Ladies Cup final had the omens heading in the right direction. One of my Granny's pearls of wisdom when talking to her neighbours before the game was "if John Curry can win the Olympic skating, why can't we win the cup!". The game kicked off and we all fidgeted whenever Man U came into our half. During the second half Granny nodded off as she always did about half four, then that glorious moment happened and my Grandad, my Sister and me went loop the bloomin loop round the living room: Granny woke up with a start "Have we won!?" she said calm as you like (now there's a Woman who brought up a very young Daughter through the bombing of Southampton in the war). Those last 7 minutes have to have been the longest 7 minutes that I can ever remember when the ref blew for full time, we all went mental again along with most of Dale Valley Road, we could hear the car horns blowing up on Winchester road. The next day seeing the cup and the players on the open top bus with my very own eyes cemented that IT WAS NOT A DREAM we won the FA Cup!!! Gigersaint Posted 14 November, 2009 Share Posted 14 November, 2009 The 76 Final is one of my earliest memories of becoming a Saints fan when I was six years old. My Mum put it on to watch while doing the ironing, we only had an old B&W TV, didn't have a colour one back then. :-( Being quite young and my first time watching a football match I didn't quite realise the enormity of the game when cheering Bobby Stokes goal. It was my Mum along with my Nan that also took me to the streets after to see the players parade the cup on the open top bus, I think that is when I realised how fantastic it all was, I had never seen so many people out as I did that day. I think the great thing about that Sunday, was the fact the WHOLE of So'ton took to the streets to welcome back the team. My Mum and sisters hate football but they were all there cheering and it proved to me that winning the Cup truly unites a City. A never to be forgotten weekend. At the time, being 20 it was almost too enormous an occurrance to fully take on board. It was like a dream. Southampton was an absolute madhouse that saturday night. The whole town was clogged up with emotion, cars, people, singing, joy, delerium. No one wanted to go to bed although we were knackered - how I slept I will never know. Jesus, I still get a shiver now.
adrian lord Posted 14 November, 2009 Share Posted 14 November, 2009 I was 9 and remember it vividly. Cemented my nascent support for Saints, inherited from dad. Only bad thing was I was round a friend's house watching it and they were all Man U. How i gloated though. In those days the Cup Final was utterly MASSIVE, far, far, far more than today, and the TV build-up on matchday reflected that, starting several hours beforehand, non-stop till kick off. Lets B Avenue Posted 14 November, 2009 Share Posted 14 November, 2009 9.00 Marchwood Motors coach from the Civic Centre. Stopped at Sun Inn? Popham on the way back. Then The Highfield and its licence extension to midnight. and then in any available car to the Rose Gardens, by which time it was raining. Tried to sit on random cars, but kept slipping off and then it was up the scaffolding outside Zurich Insurance in Above Bar. a ccopper climbed up to get us down and got stuck. I managed to get back to Swaythling and was promptly picked up by my taxi- driving cousin and taken to a party in Bassett Ave. Got home 24 hrs after leaving. Kind of Red Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 It was quite surreal, after years of never coming close to winning anything, we actually won something, and WE were there! And then things returned to normal, and we haven't won anything since, so all those who didn't get that one in a million day, you may have something to look foreword to. It's a feeling that's indescribable, only the next day that it really sinks in. I don't think many of us really thought we would win, and that's what made it even better. And then it all happened again on the Monday for Channon's testimonial, I have only been to a handful of games since. Maybe if England win the World Cup will it match that high. 70's Mike Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 Went to the game by car arrived in North London about 10.30am hid our tickets in our socks because Mancs were everywhere looking for tickets to steal. pub about 20mins from Wembley but filled with Mancs after about mid day so walked down to the stadium. On steps with Kev Coombes when these Mancs charged up the steps to meet us, Kev led us charging down waving a flag pole and they disappeared. Into the ground which was 75% filled with Mancs sung our hearts out, every single saints fan, then the golden moment, Next few hours a blur until we arrived back in town about 8.30pm, pub crawl then singing outside the old Woolies until 3.30am Home a few hours sleep then back into town for the biggest party i have ever been to, carried on into Monday with Channons testamonial

PhilB Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 After we scored I couldn't see the remaining 7 minutes as everyone was jumping around with ecstacy (and nerves) and my eyes were streaming with emotion. Graffito Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 We travelled up by coach. After the game the coach driver suggested he'd take us to a pub to avoid the worst of the traffic on the way back. He asked for a show of hands which I recall was about 50/50 and there was then a big argument between those that wanted to go to the pub and those that wanted to get back to Southampton as quickly as possible. The pub won and where do we end up? A pub on a Council estate in Watford! Word got round and people started to turn up to see this load of Saints fans in their local. I remember one of the locals saying "You ain't singing. You don't seem very happy for a team that's just won the cup".
Saint137 Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 6 years old (almost) making a model of a Messerschmit ME 109 (about as un-Southampton as a boy can get, although I was making it to hang in front of the Spitfire) in the living room with Mum & Dad. Don't remember a great deal about it apart from being annoyed I had nothing yellow to wear on the morning of the game. Afterwards the adults spent their winnings on beer and BBQ stuff, us kids had unsupervised access to what seemed like unlimited jelly, ice cream, and coke. Happy days. Next day saw the parade up at Donkey Common on Burseldon Rd, stood there shaking a Heineken can from the night before filled with gravel, no doubt helping the hangovers all around. yorkie Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 Blimey talks of Wembley 76! Went up by car and parked somewhere in North London - walking towards Wembley looking for a pub - and found The Green Man. It was full of Mancs inside so we stayed in the garden. No sign of trouble quite a mix - unusual for those times - but some drunken Manc starting singing and waving his ticket around uin the air - and someone ran straight past him, grabbed it and he was never seen again! My old man drove us up with the old dolly in tow - stopped at Fleet services and bought himself a scarf for the day. Didn't have it when we got back to the car - apparently some Mancs snatched it off him and offered him it back. How brave they were to take on a 60 something and his wife! He didn't care though he'd put a tenner on when they were 10-1 - so he was £90 up on the day...it was a lot of money in 1976! What great memories...getting lost after the game and walking to Wembley tube station and all the Mancs crying into their scarves - and looking for trouble. Eventually got home - and on Sunday chased the bus down threee times before ending up in the Rosde Gardens outside the Civic Centre! Possibly the happiest days for the people of Southampton - it really united the City! It was a fantastic occassion - I doubt if it will ever be matched. There was menace as well as the excitement - something todays game doesn't seem to have. However if (IF) we get Leeds in the JPT Final it could be back - they still have that element! Weston Saint Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 I have great memories of that day. 7 of us met up at the Halo club in Weston at about 12 and played a couple of hands of poker and killer rummy (we had regular card schools then). Then a large carry out from the local off licence to one of the groups flat to watch the match. Pyramid of beer cans got bigger as the day went on. When Bobby Stokes scored one of us (not me) was in the bathroom having a pee. We all piled in with some of us falling into the bath. You had to be there! Then at the end of the match we staggered back to the Halo club to carry on celebrating but by 9pm we just ran out of steam!! Great day saddened now by the fact that out of those 7 one died of a heart attack at 39, one a brain haemorrhage at 41, one from cancer in early 50’s and my young brother was killed at age 41. Lost touch with one of them but regularly see the other. Later in the summer a group of us from work got hold of a video tape of the match so went up to one of the houses in Chandlers Ford all dressed up in Saints gear. Watched the first half then all down the pub for a few beers before returning for the second half. You should have seen the looks on the locals faces. On the day after the final I was supposed to be at a christening but stayed home in my flat above the shops in Bitterne Road (opposite the Station Hotel) and could almost touch the team as they passed in the open top bus. sadoldgit Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 (edited) I sat amongst of large group of Manchester United supporters and was unwisely wearing a yellow jumper. I jumped out of my seat when Stokes scored only to sit back down very quickly when I remembered where I was sitting! The Mancs were not happy bunnies and walking down the steps out of the stadium there was a hail of cans from the back - the were throwing them at their own supporters? Happy days. The later match was better footbal-wise and safer even though we lost to Liverpool by 1-0 in the Charity Shield, but I wasn't complaining - two trips in a few months to see Saints at Wembley, awesome. macthesaint Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 I watched it in the packed living room of our house in Portsmouth. Hard to believe but most of the kids at my school wanted us to win, but a few days before had wanted to string me up after we won at Nottarf Krap. I ran down my street with my yellow scarf afterwards and was at the civic centre on the Sunday with my family. Oh to have been at Wembley that day! The League Cup final 79 was to be my first final.
