~~Mods, I hope this is appropriate and if you could make a sticky out of it for a whaile that would be helpful too.~~

While spending quite a bit of time with Southampton superstar and icon Ron Davies in New Mexico recently we discussed many things, as you can imagine.

Ron is a proud man, that has through little fault of own fallen on some challenging times, losing his beloved wife Chris and also coming through major surgery etc.

Anyway I guided conversations towards things that he enjoyed, gave him pleasure and contentment. Besides 'soccer' and memories of his Southampton career (definitely his happiest times in the game), Ron really has pride in his real ability to do (what I think are outstanding) caricatures and sketches.

Most of us recall these fine pictures and yet Ron had little idea just how desirable they are to people. From a simple 7x5 or 10x6 facial photo Ron can draw great likenesses and enjoys doing it.

So the question is and just feeling the water you understand, is their interest out there to have Ron do a picture/s of anyone? Yourself, a family member or friend, maybe even a past of present player/athlete/singer or star. Just gauging interest to see where it takes us.

PM me if you want to ask any questions etc or make a comment discreetly, btw as good as Ron's cartoon etc were back in the day they are now much more detailed and improved.

I could think of many personal requests for myself, my dad, etc, but here is one general thought.......

How about he does an all time Saints 11 (as voted for on TSW) which is auctioned on here?

What do you think, Tim/MODS?

P.S. I, for one, really appreciate all that you have been doing for Ron. I doff my hat to you, sir!

Could auction the original and sell signed and numbered limited issue prints.

These replies and the PM responses I am receiving are excellent. Here are a couple of generalisations. Ron will, for the most part, do art of individuals. e.g. you with a golf bag. Your dad with a fishing rod. Mark Dennis crossing from the left or Elvis with a microphone...you give him the theme. He will sketch the picture with a large face on a minature body. Normally if there is more than one character in his art then the other(s) besides the main focus will be done in minimal detail and as a 'prop' to the main subject only.

I have a truly fantastic one of Danny Wallace that Ron did, I will try and post it tomorrow for all to see the quality.

Could work, as well as the original and limited editions (perhaps personally signed), mass produce and sell in the Megastore, perhaps linked to the GITR charity - food for thought perhaps..?

Great idea!

And, another thought, maybe an A team Vs B team picture? (Especially seeing as some of my 1st choices ended up in the B team.)

So here they are:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Manager: Lawrie McMenemy

A-Team

-------------------Shilton---------------------

Golac-------Wright--------Svensson------Bridge

Paine---------Ball--------Le Tissier----Armstrong

------------Channon-------Davies--------------

A-Team subs

GK: Tim Flowers

DF: Ken Monkou

MF: Rod Wallace

ST: Steve Moran

UP: Nick Holmes

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Manager: Ted Bates

B-Team

----------------------Niemi----------------------

Dodd------Lundekvam------Watson---------Dennis

D.Wallace----Williams---------Case--------Marsden

-------------Keegan--------Pahars---------------

B-Team Subs

GK: Kelvin Davis

DF: Mick Mills

MF: Ronnie Ekelund

ST: Alan Shearer

UP: Peter Osgood

Good aren't they..? Especially as Ron takes his rightful place at number 9 in the A-Team. In my opinion, the teams are nicely balanced. I think the A-Team would just about beat the B-Team on the most occasions. But just once in a while, I think the B-Team might run amok, because there is searing pace in that forward line. And the midfield are no sluggards either. But there's so much craft, skill and guile in the A-Team, it would be a joy to watch them play. And Micky would be their hare..! But of course, if any of the first elevens were having an off-day, what a subs bench there is to pick from for either team.

Remember Ron doing pictures of Saints players in the 70's and i collected these and got them signed by Terry Paine at my local newsagent in Sholing at the time. God knows where they are now and wish i'd kept them.

How about engaging MLT and get him to get a pic of the Soccer Saturday team (Stelling etc) for Ron to do - that would get great exposure and maybe drum up some enduring interest.
That is a fantastic idea. The exposure to that as well as the respect he would get from his past glories would be massive. it would also open the door for him to do many of the stars he played against and we all like a bit of nostalgia of our boyhood heroes.

If he had any originals from his playing days i suggest they would be worth quite a bit.

Get some of Rons pics.

Set up an ebay account "Give it to Ron"

Auction them.

The money raised could either be given straight to him, or put towards a trip for him to Southampton. He deserves to be a guest of honour for a game and the latter scenario would be more ethical for the club and Daily echo to get behind and promote.

Just make sure it's a private listing as due to the exposure it'd put people off if their identities were revealed during bidding.

Ron did a coloured (pastel/coloured pencil maybe) of my girlfriend Stephanie for all the help leading to his successful hip ops, it came out of the blue!! He just said 'hey for all the talking we do, I've never seen Steph so send me snap'. The next thing we know is that a beautiful picture shows up. He knows that Steph is a keen golfer, so he portrayed her golf club in hand and golf-bag in the background.

The reason I am mentioning this is that neighbours and friends, who have not a clue who Ron is, asked where she got it? How much it cost? And then wanted to know about Ron. His work (alone) is really good.

I'm no expert, but have a mate who is learning the whole "make money on the web thing", so here is a couple of really base level (bleedin obvious) ideas to work from

With an ebay account, the critical issue then is to drive people to that, apparently this is then where we as fans can help by driving people to sign up to facebook groups, we act as the "advertising" and anyone with a blog or Twitter can do the same.

You need to set Ron up with a scanner or something to save having to run around yourself and show him how to get up and running. Maybe a Twitter site so people can request or order pictures for him to put onto Ebay

With 200 or so active members on here pushing it out to our network (of in my case) 2 friends we could actually get coverage. A letter to the Echo and maybe the web-site team and we could be up and running

In "marketing" terms, a couple of "freebie specials" for auction at Charity events will also go a very long way.

Get this right & Big Ron should be needing to come to Southampton to meet his customers, not just his fans.

Phil, terrific response. I just want to re-iterate some stuff, maybe that I should make clear.

Firstly, we do not want to inundate Ron. What has been sent so far should be fine for him to cope with. He thinks the World of his Southampton 'family' and is not really (at this stage) looking to go outside the people on here and other fans by word of mouth.

Ron, doing good quality work can probably do about two pictures a week to start with. I have to tell you if Ron is not happy with the picture he starts afresh and does until he feels he gets it right. He (thinks) he does guys better than ladies.

I totally agree if he was marketed and run like a business with your guidelines he could make some decent money out of it.

However, the goals are more to keep Ron happily occupied and provide some of you great Saints people with something very good and somewhat desirable and collectable, for a reasonable donation.

I like the crowd pictures around the ground and under the stands already.

A few of these caricatures, scanned in and enlarged and put on the walls would add to what is already there.

Perhaps each stand could have a whip round and choose their own subject. This could raise more for Ron and be better for fans that would like to donate but don't have the spare cash to make a personal drawing an option.

Tim, I'm very glad that you mention that it can take to produce cartoon artworks and that Ron is a perfectionist. As an ex-illustrator I know about the pressures that can be involved in producing artworks, and so hope that we all, in our enthusiasms, don't forget that Ron has been (and possibly/probably still is) coming out of traumatic personal experiences that would test all of us. So my request to everyone is don't expect Ron to be churning studies out as a service to our beck and call. Ron is retired and one or two a week would be a good rate, should he wish to do this Then he might want a break away from commitments from time to time. When pleasurable hobbies become a business it can add to pressures, which we wouldn't want.

Also I'm not sure if artwork fees have been mentioned, but original works by cartoonists can sell for good sums, so we should not be expecting to be buying these on the cheap (not that I am sure anyone would expect to). Copyright ownership must always remain with Ron the creator, even though individual drawings might be purchased, so that he can continue to benefit from print sales.

So, great ideas, but I do urge patience.

Hi Tim.

How soon do you think you could motivate Ron into taking the 'sizable' project on? I would love to have some anniversaries and birthdays complemented with such a unique gift!

Any clue on the price - i'm in the US too so a $$$ conversion for us expats would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

After discussing this if Ron Does any 'team' art, he will do each player one at a time and it will probably be a little bit of a lengthy project.

Strictly speaking, he wants to and is best at doing 8"x10" or there abouts, of individuals. Any secondary people or objects will be there just as props or to enhance the subject matter person.

Hope this helps.
